Frankie & The Pool Boys - The Wet Season CD (Double Crown)

With the complete selling out of the Frankie and the Pool Boys catalogue, Double Crown Records presents an anthology of songs from their first three albums. Packed with 79+ minutes and 27 songs in total, it also features four new cuts. The track list was chosen largely based on how well the songs were received in a live setting, so the selection really was decided by fans of the band.

All of the Pool Boys’ three albums (the 2008 eponymous first album, 2013’s The Adventures of Cap’n Coconuts, and the Pipeline Magazine Album of the Year for 2018, Spin The Bottle) are well represented. Of course, “Ewa on the Beach” (voted the #3 Surf Revival song by listeners of North Sea Surf Radio) is included, as are the band’s most familiar songs, “The Wet Season,”“Skinny Dippin’,”“Teke Teke Teke” and “Tan Line Fever.”

As the Pool Boys take this moment to look back at thirteen years of recording and touring, they also look forward to new music and touring. A new album is currently being rehearsed with plans for recording and release in early 2022.

Tracks: Moorea Mon Amour - Ewa On The Beach - Skinny Dippin' - Tan Line Fever - Amber Waves - The Wet Season - The Golden State - Magyara - Spin The Bottle - Dreams (Live) - Raise Hell - Tic Toc - The Raven - Prayer Wheel - The Whammy - Summer Cold - Cat Fight - A Man Called Dirt - Seafoam Angels - Organic Matters - Magic River - Finito Bandito - El Valenciano - Teke, Teke, Teke - Poser - Game Of Thrones - No Surf Today

Frankie & The Pool Boys - The Wet Season CD - DCCD89 - $12.75 (Order From Double Crown Records)

The Surfaders - Shaken And Disturbed CD (Double Crown)

The Surfaders are a Dutch surf/instrumental rock combo that yearns to create the soundtracks of B-movies yet to be made, with a cinematic sound they call "Surf-Noir". After winning over fans worldwide with their first two albums, 2021 brings the release of their finest collection of songs yet - Shaken & Disturbed. Twelve dazzling instrumental classics that conjure up images of danger, intrigue and...well shaken cocktails! Guitar fanatics will swoon over the melodies and sounds heard on this disc - a highlight is "Moscow Mule", which the band describes as "So fiery and limey fresh that you may well mistake it for a soda. If you do, expect this cross-bred liquid quadruped to kick you in the head as hard as the Siberian winter is cold. We call it Breznjev’s brain-freeze."

Tracks: Moscow Mule - Death In The Afternoon - Full Moon - Tequila Matador - Henrietta - Sex On The Beach - Alien Secretion - Strawberry Daiquiri - Follow That Black Rabbit - Zombie - Stargazer - Dark & Stormy

The Surfaders - Shaken And Disturbed CD - DCCD88 - $12.75 (Order From Double Crown Records)

John Blair & Mark Linett Team Up On 'Waves Of Care' Surf Music Project To Benefit MusiCares

From Grammy dot com:

Take off on a surf odyssey with this collection of 12 bands and 27 [songs] from the Surf [Guitar] 101 Convention with all proceeds benefitting MusiCares.

A new benefit album, Waves Of Care, celebrates surf music for a great cause. Conceived by three-time GRAMMY-winning producer and engineer Mark Linett and acclaimed surf music historian and performer John Blair, the album is out now online and on physical CD, with 100 percent of proceeds from its sale going to benefit MusiCares.

Recorded live by Linett, the album features all 12 bands that performed at the 2018 Surf Guitar 101 Convention as well as three bonus tracks from the 2017 convention. In all, its 27 tracks explore the glorious, reverb-soaked sounds of surf music by bands from the United States, France, Denmark, Canada, and Italy.

Bands featured on Waves Of Care include Fascinating Creatures of The Deep, Black Flamingos, Kaisers of Kalifornia, Tremolo Beer Gut, Sentinals Tribute Band, Frankie & the Pool Boys, Urban Surf Kings, PJ & the Galaxies Tribute Band, Surfer Joe, King Pelican, Les Agamemnonz, Par Avion, Surf Rockers and Blue Hawaiians, who have contributed to the soundtrack of the TV series "Friends" and "SpongeBob SquarePants."

The project celebrates the rich history of instrumental surf music, from its emergence in the early '60s to its resurgence since the late '70s, its heavy use in the 1994 blockbuster film Pulp Fiction and its continued rise in popularity in the era of social media.

"Today, there are hundreds of bands performing and recording surf instrumentals with a growing, global fan base," a statement about the project says. "Some bands maintain a traditional approach to the sound and style, while others take it into slightly progressive territory."

The Surf Guitar 101 Convention, where the album was recorded, is an all-day event that hosts a dozen bands from all over the world and has been held annually since 2008 in Southern California. Additionally, Surf Guitar 101's website serves as the premier social networking hub for surf music.

The proceeds from the digital and physical sales of "Waves of Care" will benefit MusiCares and their continued efforts to help music people in need. Waves Of Care on CD will be available via eBay and www.johnblair.us, while digital downloads will be available on Bandcamp.

June is International Surf Music Month

June is International Surf Music Month!

June 1, 2019 – This June marks the eleventh anniversary of “International Surf Music Month”, endorsed by a coalition of international surf bands. With the support of NESMA, a U.S. based network of surf bands, surf music events are planned for the month of June throughout the world. In addition to the northeast U.S., including Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New York, shows will take place in Maryland, Washington DC, California, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Canada, among other places.

Surf music is a form of guitar-led instrumental rock music which evolved in the early 1960s. Pioneering surf musicians included bands such as Dick Dale and the Deltones, The Surfaris (of “Wipe Out” fame), and composers like Paul Johnson of The Belairs. Specialized instruments and amps focus on a reverb sound and guitar techniques that mimic the sound and feel of surfing. While taking a backseat to vocal pop music during the late 1960s and 1970s, surf music rebounded in the 1980s (sometimes called the “second wave”), and again in 1996 with the popularity of the film “Pulp Fiction” and its surf music-laced soundtrack. Current surf bands continue to play the classic tunes from the 1960s and later, while composing new surf music and releasing original recordings to expand the style.

“Surf instrumental music has no language barriers or age restrictions", says Mike Rosado, founder of NESMA and the Connecticut surf band 9th Wave. “Today's instrumental surf music pays homage to the founding legends of the style, as well as pushing the boundaries of progressive, contemporary surf music.”

The month starts out with The Great Lakes Surf Battle (fourteenth annual) in Toronto Canada on May 31-June 1. Founded in 2006 by Canadian surf bands The Blue Demons and The Von Drats, the Great Lakes Surf Battle has grown to become the top surf music event in the far north. This year’s festival will see the first night focusing on Toronto-area surf bands, such as The Cliff Divers, and Mark Malibu & the Wasagas. The second evening of surf music will be an “Intercontinental Championship”, including The Tsunamibots and 9th Wave from the New England, as well as bands from Texas and Nova Scotia.

In the U.S., the first Saturday of every month since 2004 finds Unsteady Freddie’s Surf Rock Shindig hosting regional, national and international bands at Otto’s Shrunken Head Tiki Bar in New York City. June 1 is no exception, offering up a diverse show with bands such as The Derangers (Massachusetts), Commercial Interruption (CT), and The Supertones (NYC), for a crowd well-versed in instrumental surf music.

Italy is also celebrating with the annual Surfer Joe Summer Festival in Livorno Italy, June 20-23. This is the 14th edition of this festival which has been running since 2003; this year it boasts performances by about 30 international bands over 4 days, including bands from Italy, U.S.A., Israel, Mexico, Spain, Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, Brazil, France, Germany, and Belgium (more information at http://www.surferjoemusic.com/festival/).

Mexico has its own large surf & garage music festival planned for June 1, called Wild O’ Fest. Bands on the bill this year come from Mexico, U.S.A., Canada, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, and Spain. Of course, other important surf music events happen in months that are not designated as International Surf Music Month, such as the Surf Guitar 101 Convention each August in southern CA (https://www.facebook.com/SG101Convention).

The genre of surf music continues to thrive throughout the world; surf bands in almost every country, including Russia, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Japan, Serbia, U.S.A., Canada, and the U.K. make this a truly diverse, international style of music. (For a brief history of surf music, see http://www.nesmasurf.org/surf%20music%20history.htm)

For more information, contact Mike Rosado of 9th Wave at mike@9thwavesurf.com, or your local NESMA surf band (www.nesmasurf.org ). This event is listed with Chase's Calendar of Events.
