Frankie & The Pool Boys - The Adventures Of Cap'n Coconuts CD (Double Crown)
And just who is “Cap’n Coconuts”??? Simian spy turned Hollywood cad, now a bouncer at a bar in San Francisco? Or star of a 60’s TV sitcom that apparently only Pool Boys leader Ferenc Dobronyi remembers. “He was my muse for this record. I wanted to write instrumentals that evoked the feelings that I get when I remember the music of my early childhood."
But what will Cap’n Coconuts do for you? Drop the needle on side one and hear the full on, spare no expenses production of a Wrecking Crew session. Vintage Fender guitars and amps, B-3 and Vox Continental, Beatle bass and Ludwig Black Beauty. Horns, strings, glockenspiel. Tank reverb, tube compression and U-41s. The Pool Boys know you can hear the details. Thirteen originals and one cover song that strive for an individual tone and mood on each track.
Basic tracks for the Cap’n Coconuts sessions were cut with the core group of Dusty Watson (The Sonics, Dick Dale, Agent Orange) on drums, Danny Snyder (The TomorrowMen) on rhythm guitar, Tony Bald (The Gregors) on bass and percussion, Karen Dobronyi (Meshugga Beach Party) on keyboards and Ferenc Dobronyi on lead guitar. But, the Pool Boys continue to have an open membership when it comes to recording. The guest list on these tracks is a mile long with musicians from bands such as The Surf Coasters, The Exotics, Tikiyaki Orchestra, The Deadbeats, Pollo Del Mar sitting in. Insect Surfer David Arnson works his signature mojo on “Rattler Ranch” and the man responsible for the surf revival, John Blair of Jon & The Nightriders trades leads on “Cat Fight”.
Tracks: Cap'n Coconuts TV Theme - Skinny Dippin' - Ripley In Love - Cat Fight - The Golden State - Manx! - Sundial Suite - Tic Toc - Dead Man Surfin - Paniolo - Organic Matters - Rattler Ranch - Surfacing - Monkey Pod
Order from Double Crown Records: Frankie & The Pool Boys - The Adventures Of Cap'n Coconuts CD - DCCD51 - $12.75
SURF-NOIR INSPIRED EP “RATTLESNAKE CHOPPER” RELEASED BY NYCʼS CINEMATIC INSTRUMENTALISTS, BENINGHOVEʼS HANGMEN, AT NUBLU FRIDAY MAY 17th.
Downtown NYC - based sextet, Beninghoveʼs Hangmen announces their second release, an EP, “Rattlesnake Chopper”. The group will hold a release party at the experimental hotspot, Nublu (62 Ave C NY, NY 10009) at 9pm on Friday May 17th. Their “creeptastic surf-noir” sounddeveloped from a desire to mash the music of Tow Waits and Danny Elfman. But with themenacing yet playful instrumentation of two rock guitarists, saxophone, trombone, bass, anddrums, the result is more of a psycho-crazed soundtrack to a Tarantino film.
The self-released EP comes at the heels of the critically-acclaimed first album, the self-titled “Beninghoveʼs Hangmen”. New York Music Daily rated it “#7: 50 Best Albums of 2011” and LucidCulture placed it “#3: Top 25 Jazz Albums of 2011”. Songs from the album have been featuredon Comedy Central, IFC, and more.
The music is composed by saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist, Bryan Beninghove. The bandconsists of guitarists Eyal Maoz and Dane Johnson (both John Zorn alum), trombonist RickParker (Tim Berne), Shawn Baltazor on drums, and Ezra Gale on bass. Kellen Harrison playsbass on the EP. The album is available at www.beninghoveshangmen.com and all internetmusic dealers, such as itunes.

Celebrating its fifth year, and currently the largest all-instrumental music festival in the world, the 2013 Instro Summit started as a four-band, one night show at the Cave in Chapel Hill. It has since grown into a monster 3-day, 27 band extravaganza, held this year at the Casbah in Durham. Bands from all over the US and elsewhere gather here to play (but not sing) the finest music they can offer, covering such diverse categories as surf, soul, rock, lounge, country, punk, and “I’m not sure what you’d call it”. No Jam Band noodlers or Prog-rock experiments here; all bands play music that is fun and easy to dance to, especially with a PBR in one hand and your date in the other.
Surf music rules the Instro Summit, but when you get this many bands together, you find that everybody does it differently. Indiana's The Madeira plays lush European and African-inspired melodies, While Tallahassee’s Intoxicators rip out a cowpunk version of surf that would make Joe Maphis AND the Trashmen proud. Pennsylvanians Great White Caps knock out a giddy Jamaican-flavored pile o’ fun, While bands like Team Void, Blood Red River, Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion and Kill, Baby...Kill All have some serious punk attitude in mind, but clearly ain’t listening to the same records. And we haven’t even mentioned the straight ahead surf of the Diamondheads, El Mirage and the Surge, the Horror-themed stompers of the Coffin Daggers, the Fuzz-filled Psycho-Delics of the High Fidelics, The “Gulag Tunes” of Russia’s Vivisectors, or the aggressive “3rd Wave surf” from the Aqualads, Atomic Mosquitos and others. And this is only HALF of the bands attending, the rest playing music that is perhaps less definable or more diverse, but just as much fun.
Other highlights this year include the “Can You Play as Wack’d as Link Wray” guitar solo competition, where guitar players try and knock out and wildest solo during the Link Wray song “I’m Branded” to win a $500 suitcase full of prizes and swag, The “Rumble Jam” where as many guitarists as can be fitted on stage all play the song “Rumble” at the same time (20 guitars last year–a new record), plus two special tribute acts: One, a complete performance of the Astronauts “Surfin’ With...” album (considered by many to be the greatest surf music recording of all time), and a special tribute to the late, legendary Alabama surf band the Penetrators, featuring their original rhythm section.
Tickets are 12 dollars per night, or you can get a three-day pass for 24 dollars. Cheapskates should note that on Saturday, May 4th, all bands playing from 12-5pm are free and all ages, which also includes the open mic Lunch Jam. For more details and the complete lineup, visit casbahdurham.com, or look up “The Instro Summit” on Facebook, Google Plus, or MySpace.
