Surf Guitar 101: Gear (a primer for gremmies).

Since its inception, Surf Guitar 101's legions of players have engaged in heated debate about gear. Suffice it to say, everyone has an opinion. However, newbies often want a simple answer to the question, "What do I need to get going?"

Below, I lay out the answers, based on the classic traditional surf sound of the Sixties. Whether you want to nail the sound with vintage gear, or whether you are on a budget, you'll find useful guidelines here.

Mahalo! Surf's up!

Gavin "Windansea Beach Boy," and a true surf guitar gremmie.

Dick Dale's son Jimmy injured

Submitted on behalf of Ivan Pongracic:

From Linda Miller of HBISM:

"Please pray for Dick Dale's son Jimmy... he just got out of major surgery for a very, very serious injury to his arm... he was dirt biking and his friend cut him off causing dirt to kick up in his face so he could see where he was going and hit a rock...his elbow broke in 3 places and was driven 6 inches up into his arm...they did reconstructive surgery to fix it and hope to be able to maintain the use of his fingers and not get a life threatening bone infection while he heals....He is in the hospital now and Dick spent all night last night till 1:15Pm today getting this taken care of, coming in from his desert ranch 3 hours away... Needless to say Dick is at his wit's end regarding this so he could use us talking to the man up stairs...Jimmy's career maybe at stake here so it is a real big ordeal for both of them...Take care, Linda"

Please join me in wishing a speedy recovery to Jimmy and the Dale family.

Official Call for Topics Graphics

Okay I went around and found some passable icons for the topics. Take a look at this link to see what they all are:

Topics

At first I thought it would be cool to have a photo of The Lively Ones to represent the Bands category, but then I realized people would see a story about Slacktone, for example, and see this picture of The Lively Ones next to them. Hmmm..

So here is where I need your help: create some cool icons for this site! Send me a private message or leave a comment here.

Thanks!

Attention Mac Users

One of our new users let me know that he had problems with some of the site features when using Safari and Camino. But Firefox seemed to work okay. Please use the Feedback form to let me know of any other Mac issues you find. In the mean time, it looks like you should use Firefox...sorry...I will investigate the various PHP-Nuke forums and see what is up.

Northstar at Lake Tahoe played Slacktone on PA system

I was snowboarding at Northstar-Lake Tahoe last weekend. As we were walking in, my 15 year old son stops dead in his tracks and shouts, "Dad, they are playing SLACKTONE!" It was true. Hope to see them play live again sometime soon.
