A Merry Christmas Message from The New Dimensions

Since Christmas is upon us; we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people who have made Surf Guitar 101 and Surf Music Radio around the world such a huge success. Your input, interest and love of the music is truly inspirational. So many artists, DJ's and promoters have made great contributions musically and otherwise.

Additionally, countless groups and artists have recorded, performed and showcased outstanding original music, too many in fact to list individually, however, all enjoyed. Others include those who constantly promote surf music via concerts and events. We urge you to purchase the instrumentals, songs and albums you have enjoyed, in support of these outstanding artists.

During this past year as word of our reunion after more than 50 years apart and our new CD and documentary titled; "Full Circle" was announced; literally thousands of surf music fans have sent their best wishes and positive comments via the Internet and various websites from across our great country and around the world. Each of these messages has been read and appreciated.

We would also like to personally thank some of the surf music heroes and legends who have made surf music what it is and who have graciously appeared in our upcoming documentary or are yet to be interviewed. Just a few include Randy Nauert of The Challengers, Will Glover of The Pyramids, Paul Johnson of The Bel-Airs, Dave Myers of Dave Myers and the Surftones, members of The Ventures, The Beach Boys, Dean Torrence, Three Dog Night, Jan and Dean, Drummer Sandy Nelson, Lorenzo Valdambrini aka; Surfer Joe, Academy Award nominee and former rocker James Edward Olmos of Eddie James and the Pacific Ocean, Denny Tedesco, son of legendary guitarist Tommy Tedesco and producer of The Wrecking Crew movie, James Darren; aka; Moondoggie of Gidget fame, Tommy Roe, Johnny Tillitson, Ron Dante of the Archies and Cufflinks, Denny Randell composer/arranger for the Four Seasons, surf music historian Bob Dalley, iconic producer Bones Howe, historians from The Surf Heritage Museum, numerous former and present day professional surfers, custom surfing related auto and woodie builders, historians and numerous others.

With luck and a prayer, the story may conclude principal filming the summer of 2017. There remains a number of scheduled interviews by other movers and shakers in the world of music and film, who will help to ultimately shape the story behind surf music and the music and generation of the 1960's. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, a great healthy and prosperous 2017. Sincerely, members of The New Dimensions band.

"Shootout" by The Insanitizers wins First Prize in Dallas Songwriters Association 2016 Competition

"Shootout" just WON FIRST PRIZE in the 2016 Dallas Songwriters Association Contest (Instrumental). The award page cites Insanitizers guitarist Conrad Swartz as the songwriter ("Squid" here on SG101). Here is a link to the awards page:
https://dallassongwriters.org/2016-dsa-song-contest-winners/
Along with that web page announcement is a video announcement, on the third in a sequence of video recordings of the contest awards program. "Shootout" is the first song on The Insanitizers' October 2016 album "Guitar Fun" and is followed by 21 more energetic guitar instrumentals. You can hear it at Insanitizers.com, and the CD album is sold by DWM Music, Deep Eddy Records, CD Baby, etc.

In this contest "Shootout" competed against instrumentals of any genre, so this shows that surf guitar music remains interesting and competitive. In recording the lead Conrad used a Rose Mariposa pickup near the bridge on a strat style guitar.

John Blair to present the Classic Surf Top 101 on North Sea Surf Radio

image

This Sunday North Sea Surf Radio will broadcast the 4th edition of the oldest and most popular countdown lists on the station; the Classic Surf Top 101 and the Surf Revival Top 101. North Sea Surf Radio is very proud to welcome John Blair as honorary guest DJ who for this special occasion will present the Classic Surf Top 101. John Blair is widely known in the surf music scene as instigator of the first surf revival with his band Jon & The Nightriders and author of the Illustrated Discography of Surf Music. The Surf Revival Top 101 will for the first time be presented by DJ Jonpaul, who successfully hosted the first three editions of the Classic Surf Top 101, now handing over these duties to John Blair.

"When Niels asked me to present the 2016 edition of the Classic Surf Top 101, I was immediately enthusiastic. North Sea Surf Radio is an unprecedented radio station and a very valuable resource for the surf music scene. I am honored to make a small contribution for this end-of-the-year celebration of the best surf instrumentals of the 1960s. Having collected surf music since the early 60's and writing my Discography of Surf Music, there are a lot of facts and insights that can be shared with the listeners of the station. I look forward to presenting the best 101 surf instrumentals of the First Wave to NSSR listeners."

"John is one of the most knowledgeable persons when it comes to classic surf music and I am absolutely thrilled that he said yes when I asked him to present this list. Having actually grown up during the early 60's and owning one of the most extensive collections of classic surf music I am certain he will be able to make this 4th edition of our list an absolute joy to listen to. His six hour show will contain some highly interesting first hand anecdotes that our listeners are craving for.
After personally having presented the first three editions of the Surf Revival Top 101 I am happy to hand over this responsibility for the fourth edition to DJ Jonpaul, who did an amazing job on the Classic Surf Top 101 in previous years. I am off this year and will be nailed to the radio."

The Akulas - Rustines NEW LP/CD/DIGITAL

The Akulas present you with pride their long-awaited full album Rustines on Green Cookie Records! Listen, buy digital or pre-order Vinyl or Cd now on Bandcamp.
Official Release Day: Saturday 4 March 2017 (we keep you informed soon about the party!) Have fun!

THE AKULAS
Think reverb soaked guitar twang.
Think pounding drum beats.
Think cheesy organ sounds.
Think thumping bass vibes.
Shake all of that together – do not stir.
Serve cool.
That’s The Akulas.

Fine instrumentals, originating between the sun blasted shores of California and the dry deserts of Reverbistan. Rooted in Ghent (Belgium) since 2005, The Akulas remain inspired by the sixties sounds of surf music, Hammond craze and European beat and instrumentals.

After a critically acclaimed 5-track EP released in 2012, The Akulas proudly present a follow-up full album ‘Rustines’ early 2017 on Green Cookie Records.

Over the last years, The Akulas earned their stripes as a live band on stages in Belgium and also in the Netherlands. They played at events such as North Sea Surf Festival (Amsterdam, NL), Viva Lola Festival (Sint Niklaas, BE), Night of the Phantom (Ghent, BE), Rockabilly Day (Assenede, BE), European Bug In (Chimay, BE), De Kaaij (Nijmegen, NL), De Nieuwe Anita (Amsterdam, NL), Charlatan (Ghent, BE).
