A few days ago there was a short segment about Rebetiko music on national radio, and a connection to Surf Music was brought up. Misirlou (aka the only Surf song known to some extent around here) was then played.

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

Check out the Dirty Fuse album Surfbeteka

FYI, play enfold out of that.

Right now I can hear my neighbor playing Wipe Out on his guitar--thru the wall of course. And it's wrong. He tries!!! Wink

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

Just a minute ago, in Golf Channel's lead-in to its Golf Central program, surf music accompanied aerial shots of the coastline at Pebble Beach. Couldn't identify the group or the number, but it I'd say it was second or third wave.

Everybody up!

Yesterday evening I watched (a not so great) horror movie on TV called "Night of the Demons", and "The Ghastly Stomp" was featured prominently. Not totally unexpected, but nice surprise. Maybe it was even mentioned here, I didn't read through the thread.

The Scimitars

Just turned on the radio and heard the kilaueas with "planet olga", followed by a song by Leonard Nimoy. It's one of the better stations of the area, but I wouldn't have suspected them to play any surf music besides the usual suspects.

I watched an old skateboard video this afternoon (Bones Brigade Video Show) and there was some mix of ska and surf music in one of the half pipe shots. Not sure, but it sounded a lot like the Halibuts.

Check it out:

Mr. Mysterioso by the Halibuts is listed in the music credits, so... Good ear!

I was on a flight w/ Southwest yesterday, checking out their free in-flight entertainment. Kinda cool to see not just streaming live TV, but a pretty nice partnership with Beats Audio who've provided some 'expertly curated' playlists. Some pretty nice collections (well over 100) as I was scrolling through. I was fairly impressed. Then I found this one and was beside myself!

A local radio station played "Jokermobile" by Messer Chups this afternoon as part of their (dreadful) regular car show. Unfortunately they didn't mention that the band plays here on Wednesday...

I hear surf music in the background all the time on Anthony Bourdain's various shows. I think someone at zero point zero productions really likes surf music but I really like to think it's Tony.

I was at Boo Boo records - a very nice record store in San Luis Obispo - on Saturday. I walked into the back room dedicated to vinyl looking for the surf music section and heard a bit of Pipeline played on the spot by one Craig Nuttycombe of The New Dimensions. He played it on his old Martin orchestra model acoustic as he was being interviewed in the store by a film crew doing a documentary on The New Dimensions. He picked up his guitar only briefly in discussing his years in music that started with The New Dimensions.

I talked to him after the interview. He was glad to hear of the surf revival and the Huntington Beach summer pier shows. He told me of the "rack job" LP's that The New Dimensions put out on the Sutton label and how he came to join the band when they found him working for the Fife & Nichols musical instrument division of Wallach's Music City in Hollywood. As noted on other forums within SG101, he talked of the sad passing of New Dimension's keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon last year. Greenspoon - who more famously played with Three Dog Night - died as they were assembling a New Dimensions revival album. It was decided that The New Dimensions will continue with the recording but details on who will replace Jimmy are not yet decided. The film crew was impressed enough with my knowledge of The New Dimensions and the general surf music scene that they had me signing a release and put me on camera for a brief interview. It was an exciting afternoon. -Marty

"Hello Girls!"

I just read your comments, Marty. What a wonderful day! I'm very glad The New Dimensions are recording again. They remain one of my favorite discoveries since this formerly out-of-touch east-coaster joined up here.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Yeah, Noel, I gave them another listen when I got home. They had a good reverb-drenched sound and some excellent originals.
