V/A - Seasonal Favorites: Volume Four CD (Double Crown)
People have bugged us the past few years, even in the middle of the summer, asking when the next volume of our Seasonal Favorites series would be out. Well, the agonizing wait is over - it's here, just in time for Christmas 2016! This may be our best one yet, with new recordings from The Beagles, Black Flamingos, The Ogres, Twang-O-Matics, Urban Surf Kings, The Other Timelines, The TomorrowMen, Tiki Joe's Ocean and more. Plus, it's got some past faves from Martin Cilia, Los Straitjackets, The Barbary Coasters and others. Mostly holiday surf/instro tunes, but there are a few vocals to really get you in the spirit of the season. 15 instros and 5 vocals, with cover art as always from the incomparable Johnny Bartlett!
Tracks: Martin Cilia: Christmas In July - Los Straitjackets: Groovy Old St Nick - The Beagles: Snoopy’s Christmas - Meshugga Beach Party: Hot Rod Hannukah - Black Flamingos: How The Gurch Stole Christmas - The Barbary Coasters: Lump Of Coal - Twang-O-Matics: Staffan var en stalledräng - Urban Surf Kings: I Saw Three Ships (Mr. Rebel Version) - Fronkensteen: Nutty Sweet - Aqualads: Angels We Have Heard On High - The Ogres: Xmas Is A Bust - The TakeOffs: Santa Claus Is Coming To Surf - The Other Timelines: Public Access Christmas Special - The Kanaloas: X-Mas Palm Tree - The Falcons: Ye Merry Gentlemen - Crazy Aces: Crazy AceMas - The TomorrowMen with E-Rock: Friends (At Christmas Time) - Travelers Of Tyme: Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy - Tiki Joe’s Ocean: Jingle Bells - Whoa Nellie! THE AKULAS
Think reverb soaked guitar twang.
Think pounding drum beats.
Think cheesy organ sounds.
Think thumping bass vibes.
Shake all of that together – do not stir.
Serve cool.
That’s The Akulas.
Fine instrumentals, originating between the sun blasted shores of California and the dry deserts of Reverbistan. Rooted in Ghent (Belgium) since 2005, The Akulas remain inspired by the sixties sounds of surf music, Hammond craze and European beat and instrumentals.
After a critically acclaimed 5-track EP released in 2012, The Akulas proudly present a follow-up full album ‘Rustines’ early 2017 on Green Cookie Records.
Over the last years, The Akulas earned their stripes as a live band on stages in Belgium and also in the Netherlands. They played at events such as North Sea Surf Festival (Amsterdam, NL), Viva Lola Festival (Sint Niklaas, BE), Night of the Phantom (Ghent, BE), Rockabilly Day (Assenede, BE), European Bug In (Chimay, BE), De Kaaij (Nijmegen, NL), De Nieuwe Anita (Amsterdam, NL), Charlatan (Ghent, BE).
Stories from Shamehill - Made in Amsterdam (2-track Live Single)
Surf rock from Amsterdam, The Netherlands
On a sweltering summer Sunday afternoon the lady and gentlemen of Stories from Shamehill hit the stage at The Waterhole in Amsterdam to record "Made in Amsterdam", a two-track live cd-single with hectic, roaring and steamy versions of “Ghost Rockets in the Sky” and “Beach Blanket Bingo”. Recorded in one take, a hit and run!

Reverb Ranch has just reissued the long out of print "Live in Hell" (Urban Surf Kings). This was recorded on a sweaty summer night in Hell's Kitchen, Halifax, NS. Originally released in 2005 by the Italian label OmOm Records. 13 originals available from Bandcamp today.

The original CD release had several cover songs on it. It garnered a handful of nominations for best instrumental release for Indian Summer Music Awards, and Music NS (USK won that one).

Track listing:
1. Mystic River Pipeline--a rockin' Man or Astro Man inspired number.
2. Copley Soul--a nod to the Raybeats more soulful moments.
3. Farewell, My Lovely--drowning your sorrows in a Havana bar.
4. Pouncy Flip--a jaunty little number, complete with psychedelic breakdown (and recovery).
5. Revere Beach Parkway (by Starlight)--Ennio Morricone takes the long drive on Rt. 16
6. Smart Alec Kill--Raymond Chandler inspired spy noir.
(A note for the geeks among us (and who isn't): The guitar was recorded into a Quilter Micropro 200, 8 inch speaker. I used the onboard reverb and tremolo, a Line 6 DL4 for loops or echo. We mic'd it with an SM57, and it went into a nice tube preamp then into the computer. The guitar is a Guild S60-D with Porter Vintage Strat pickups and a Bigsby.)
