And how long it can take to learn something that's simple and repetitive. I'm working on Hava Nagila now, in line with my recently renewed appreciation for Dick Dale. Before transcribing it, I'd never really noticed that it's mostly just two parts repeated over and over. I guess that's the point: DD makes it vital enough that the simplicity is no obstacle to enjoyment, and that's the dilemma in learning it. First, it would actually be easier to remember if it was less simple (i.e., if there was more contrast between sections). Second, once the first problem is licked, how to get more 'Dick Daleness' out of the player and into the song. This is what's taking the real effort.

GREAT song, one of my top three by DD! Here's my old band doing it in '10.

Wow, hadn't seen this before. That's the kind of flat-out drive and enthusiasm ('DDness') I was talking about and that, IMHO, makes surf music such never ending fun!

I find nothing wrong with adding the original bridge.

I don't either! When I was learning the song a few years ago, the MBP version was the one I constantly kept listening to. What's funny is a video I put on youtube got used (without my knowledge) as the intro/outro theme by a now defunct podcast called "The Holy Atheist" (done by comedian and writer Stevie Ray Fromstein of Roseanne fame), when I was really just emulating you guys. If I had known, I would have just pointed them in your direction.

Danny and Mike (and Ran, who's often gotten on my case for omitting the original bridge in the song!), you're absolutely right about including it. But I do love the sheer drive and impact on DD's shortened version.

However, my absolute favorite version of Hava Nagila is probably almost certainly the Surf Coasters' EPIC version from my favorite album of theirs, Surfdelic - check it out below if you haven't heard before. Headbang (AND they include the original bridge!)

Sleep Walk, never learned it and now the bass player wants to do it. Simple but cool.

Out of Limits. I just learned Black Sand Beach (pretty faithful to the Yuzo Kayama original) but I'm working on giving Out of Limits some of that Nokie twang Wink

Surficizing "Skyfall", in Am of course.

The SpeNerds
Alaska's Premier Instrumental Surf Trio!

Learning bass for Bjork's "It's oh so quiet", and the beach boy's songs. The pet sounds sessions REALLY help.

IMO.

our new insect surfer tunes 'Kitsune', Space Park Drive','Sea Scorpion',
'Pineapple Skies','El Diablo Habanero', 'Pinto Pacer Duster Gremlin','Radar Road' and 'Vaquita'....
