Hey! I get to be distracted by recording gear for a while. Does that count?

I will not attempt to sway you based on your attempt to rationalize by seeking 'confirmation' from the group.

Ah, hell.... get that 8-track sucker at LEAST.

I suppose I could make a credible sounding old-school 2-mic stereo recording. But it will be nice to have the flexibility to place extra mics around the room to make setting and balancing volume levels easier.

And I thank you for your support!

WTH are enablers for here anyway? Big Grin

Old-school could be fun for about 5 minutes. I don't recall reading about anyone back in the day, playing through the same amp, who turned down MORE gear when it could be had, when they were young & poor, because they said, "Nah, we don't want it - someday this'll really be 'cool'."

Ah but be careful Noel. The more mics you add - the more chances you have of inducing phase issues to your recording which could detract considerably from the quality of sound. If you haven't a lot of experience engineering less is more.

I'm continuing my downsizing this weekend by letting go of two guitars that I love.......but never use, my Harmony Rocket and my Supro Belmont.
It totally makes sense to let these go, but it's still a bit of a struggle.
Anyway I can get a "that a boy", pat on the back from my fellow addicts to help ease me through the transition?
BTW, where's the free coffee?

Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!
I am going to sell an amp! For good money. I have got contact to an interested guy.
I never expected that selling is as much positive as buying.
Thank you my gearoholics group!

Very true.
Although mic placing can be learned, and at least a BD mic is a useful addition... -
Not only that - 2 great microphones is a much better investment than 5 average mics, they will serve you a long time, hold resale value, and will contribute to the quality of your recordings more than any digital trickery.
Either way, Noel won't be too limited if he chooses a 2-input interface now, it will be a cheaper purchase, and he can always add external microphone preamps (which will surely be better than the built in) or a small mixer if needed and connect them to line level inputs.

Usually I'm against small increments in gear acquisition, unless you really need something, anything to start going.
Any modern USB audio interface will do the job, at that price range there isn't a lot of functional difference between them.

Good luck with that, amigo! Thumbs Up

Funny thing about selling. I just got a card in the mail yesterday from another radio amateur who is buying up this & that in quantities large & small. I have a bunch of stuff laying around no longer used that would be a PITA to put in the effort to get rid of individually - but I'm going to use this opportunity to get rid of some (non-music) stuff, since he will pickup when in the area. Not that I would finance a music gear purchase with the proceeds....

Filling one void with another. Must re-direct brain.
Whatever

I don't understand you guys! You and Noel and other people in the past. You all only own one computer... how are you supposed to talk about music and look at pictures of guitars if you don't have internet access?

Joking obviously, but that'd be rough on me! No SG101, no pictures of guitars... I do own three computers, a tablet, smartphone, and I have three computers at work. I'm covered!

But Ralf, here's the hard part. The buyer for the Rocket backed out and now the guitar is sitting here, gleamingly amazing - and it's killing me! LOL
Good new is another friend is coming by today to look at it.
Wish me luck.
If it doesn't sell to a friend by next week it and a few more are headed to a store for consignment. Easier when they're not sitting around here.

After decades of acquiring gear, the last couple years I've been selling off most of what doesn't get used regularly - mostly vintage stuff that I had been preserving which didn't make sense since I'm not a "collector". Some of it wasn't vintage when I bought it and after letting these things go, I realized that I wasn't as attached to a particular guitar or amp as much as thought I was. As you get older, "stuff" becomes less important.

I was a big believer in the attraction of the "vintage vibe" of the older guitars until I came to the realization that my Number One player guitars were AVRI's. Really good AVRI's, ones that I actually preferred their playability and sound to the old stuff...for the most part. These days I'm mostly playing bass and my Number One is a '65 Precision "mongrel" that has a Warmoth Jazz Bass neck and a Lollar pickup. So that one probably can't be considered a vintage instrument any longer.

However, regarding amps...The older hand-wired Fender amps are clearly superior to the PCB reissues. I've had several of each over the years and I've held onto the best of the bunch - a '65 Deluxe Reverb and a '65 Bandmaster that were new when my dad bought them for me when I was still in high school. And an early '62 Dual Showman that I managed pry away from Eddie Katcher about 15 years ago. Those are all keepers for sure.

There is a local vintage guitar store that I use for marketing and selling the gear that I haven't already sold to close friends and family. But there is one amp that I left with them a couple months ago for which I am now feeling some pretty strong seller's remorse. It's a pristine '62 brown Pro that has a factory JBL D-130F and is a "Leo odd duck" that came with a tube rectifier instead of the usual solid state one. If it doesn't sell in the next couple of weeks, I'm bringing it back home.

I'll sell something else to make up for it. Smile

Haha! Yes!
Only one computer, just a simple MacBook Pro, but dozens of amps and guitars…
Here at my home the internet was interrupted… with my phone it was to expensive, at work it is officially not allowed to use for private stuff…
oh, there are internet cafes, yes…

Oh, out off topic!!!!!!! aaaaaaahhhh!!!!!

Back to gearoholics theme: This afternoon I searched for a big cardboard for sending the amp next week. I was at a big music store for asking for a cardboard. My first sight inside was: Four nice Jaguars and three nice Jazzmasters!!! Aaaaahhh!!! The first one was the Squier VM in white. I like this white! Total white! White white!!! Superwhite! Snowwhite! Iwanttohavewhite!!! The Squier finish AND especially the body shape looks for me a bit nicer than the original Fenders.
20 minutes later I was going back with a big cardboard. …with no guitar inside!!! Good!!!

Twang cheers!

I couldn't agree more. A revelation that has grabbed me something serious in the last five years or so. I love music more than gear and it doesn't take a lot of gear to make good music.

Yes! Excellent willpower! But you might wanna go back and plug in Wink

I guess that's true if you've been playing in bands for a while. At 64, I've finally expanded on the 'bedroom player' tag to play in a band with other 'old guys' and we're having a blast. And deep down, I realize this is probably gonna be IT, so go for IT! And often, you just can't use the same gear for shows that you use at home. Specially amps!

A lot of guys my age are starting to 'wind down' and maybe that's what they want. I'm just catching my 'second wind' and just hope I can keep my health!

Well, that's my story fellow Gearoholics.

You did great. Except that the current VM's (JM or Jag) are REALLY good guitars for the money. For someone with your experience, halb-stunde at most to make it play like your own. I love my VM JM and don't feel anything bad because of the sticker on the headstock. A slight treble-bleed mod and it will spank all the way down to 5 on the volume knob.

Oh... did I mention you did great? Big Grin
