Great sounding guitars Squid!

I went across town to pick up a strat that I fell in love with a few weeks ago. I was going to trade a strat that I'm not so in love with but decided I'll keep it and just pony up the cash.....already sold. Doh!

I did but I have played about a dozen strats in the last month including several 2012-2014 American Standards. That 2008 was the best player by far. I'll keep playing them until I find the right one again. Do I need another strat? yes and no Confused

It is sometimes advisable, even necessary, to fill a void with something else (like a Strat). That hole might be the 'tone' or 'feel' we hear in our head. Not looking for cross-thread points but a little rabbit-hole to go down from back in the day.

We had a little band in 80's that played regionally doing country/southern-rock/blues & some of what would be called 'classic' rock on the radio now. We had some energy & did pretty well - but reflecting back now a few decades there wasn't a really high level of musicianship and I think we just "got by." Surf done well really requires a level of precision, a standard, that I wasn't prepared for so I keep working harder than I ever did back in the day. Bends & distortion & sustain don't get you by on their own (not in my head anyway). You have to - hit. the. note.

Perhaps, if we recognize the difference between simple gear lust ("who dies with the most toys wins") vs. continually striving to improve our ability to render that note in our head, it could be justified to seek out that which helps us to do that. At some point, hopefully, the work & the gear get to the point that, one day, we simply pick up the instrument that is in our hands at the moment that all melds together - and that becomes The One.

There. How's that for an enabling?

That's some truly impressive rationalization there, Wes! I love it! Thumbs Up

All morning I have been searching online for others I can play today within 50 miles. It's Strat Wednesday! Keep your Black Friday. I'll stay home that day.

Great. Now I can give myself permission after the holidays to go in search of that '62-ish oval-C thing I want need for my Strat. (It's just parts, right?)

Played 6 in the last couple weeks. Love them Fat 50's! All were new at about 1250-1350. I missed a killer deal on a 2012 CL listing near Youngstown for 800.00. That one lasted about 2 hours.

I've got a parts list started for my downtime over the winter. First up is all new pups and electronic for my red VM jag. Also painting the headstock red. Looking forward to the project!

That should be interesting if you're gonna candy the headstock too.

The VM jag was found on CL and I traded a Vox VT50 and 40 bucks for it. It had the mustang bridge on it set at 7.25 radius on a 9.5 neck. I removed the middle saddles and carefully filed the bottoms of the saddles down to match the 9.5 raduis of the neck. I shimmed 4 different ways with setups until I got it right. The Duncun designs are good but now it's time for the real stuff. I guess I need to search for a thread on pups for the jag.

In keeping with the theme. This Jimmie Vaughn strat wants to be removed from it's current position as backup surf strat to my 93 American Standard and be setup with 10's, lower action and played through my rock rigs along with my 77 strat. The current number 1 will go to backup surf strat behind the new number one ultimate surf strat when it's whereabouts is located.

Nobody could possibly disagree with the circumstances that necessitate this move.

"Nobody could possibly disagree with the circumstances that necessitate this move."

How about One Strat To Rule Them All.
Just One.......?

LOL, Just playing Devil's advocate, stirring the pot.

Cheers,
Jeff

Sigh You are being way to practical Jeff. Were you assigned to be my sponsor during this time of weakness? I've got this under control man! Smile

Practical indeed!
Especially these days as I slowly sell off a collection to get down to only the guitars I use.
So, if anyone needs a sponsor I'm probably the person to talk to these days.

Cheers,
Jeff

Let me illustrate how easy it can be;
I just walked to my mailbox, looked through the mail on the way back up the driveway, stopped by my recycling can, and dropped the Guitar Center black friday sales brochure right in.
Without even looking at it.
Easy

That would be...

Seven Strats for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of Stone.

Three Jazzmasters for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven Strats for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine Masterbuilt Strats for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One Jaguar for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Guitar Center where the Shadows lie.
One Jaguar Ring to rule them all, One Jazzmaster Ring to find them,
One Strat Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Guitar Center where the Shadows lie."
