Hi, my name is Dave, i've been lurking around SurfGuitar101.com as a guest for a year or so. Figured i should introduce myself.
I have much respect for all of you, such a cool network of brilliant folks who's coolness extends beyond the surf. Big respect to Noel, Bjorn, eddieKatcher, JObeast, DannySnyder, bigtikidude, morphball, Ruhar, and most massive respect to Brian Neil for doing all he does to keep up this forum, it's a priceless source of knowledge that he's helped curate. I think it's very cool that the technical playing and gear aspect is covered so well, in addition to great historical accounts, plus a hub for modern happenings in the surf music world.
I live in southern Orange county California. I started playing guitar when i was 14, i'm in my 30's now. I don't surf, and ever since i saw a shark fin swimming next to me i haven't been back in the any oceans. In addition to guitar i also play sarangi which is a bowed instrument from North India, i learn via skype from Zohaib Hassan of Pakistan. I love surf music and many other styles. I really don't like to categorize music by genre though, i like more to refer to it by individual artists and compositions. I realize most of the stuff i like doesn't fall into the strict definition of surf that i've seen referenced. But since this is a general topic/introduction i'll mention more than strictly surf. Some of my favorite artists are John Zorn, Eyvind Kang, Ennio Morricone, Secret Chiefs 3, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, Astronauts, Residents, Cows, Tornadoes, Thrones, Mr. Bungle, Ventures, Wipers, Shadows, Alessandro Alessandroni, John Barry, Melvins, Fred Frith, Fantomas, Debussy, Tomita, Beach Boys, Bill Laswell, Roy Orbison, Lou Harrison, Buckethead, Vara-tones, Philip Glass, ZZ-top, Nathu Khan, Melt-Banana, Martin Denny, Kingtones(Japan), Joe Meek,ect... The list goes on and on, obscure and particular. I don't dig much of the newer surf stuff other than TomorrowMen and Vara-tones.
I like cheap, good sounding gear, mostly Squiers and stuff like that. A good set up and good approach to playing an instrument is more important to me than name brands. Lately i've been digging a Squier VM Jaguar running into a 1976 Fender Quad Reverb.
And i'm working on building a Surfybear fet reverb. Bjorn is brilliant. You all know that. Of course I'm totally inspired by the superb Surfybear build mega thread. I see so many awesome builds. The love and knowledge of spring reverb that forum members share is humbling and much appreciated. I'll post pics of the build in the appropriate thread.
Cheers to you all. And thanks.
-Another Dave

Wow, you sure sound like a kindred soul. Too bad you live all the way 'down there'... I have a sarangi around someplace, but I left it tuned up and it warped on axis, ruined it. A buddy and I spent some months in Varanasi, him studying that while I tried my hand at shenai, a double reed. I think someone else around here has a deeper background in Oriental music. There's that guy who kicks the reverb in Oceanside who's into Middle Eastern music on surf guitar.
You didn't mention Sun City Girls. Their first record has some incredible atmospheric guitar playing that's almost surf.

Hello, I joined a few weeks ago after dropping in for he last 18 months. I'm a terrible guitar player (don't practice enough) and host a show on WJCU called "The Vindictive Alarm Clock" Monday 6-8p.m. edt. I play a variety of music with some surf thrown in, I really started getting into surf about 6 years ago.
