Welcome to the site, Joe, from the sunny UK.
As for effects, go with the surfy bear.
As for music - Get yourself to Livorno in Italy for Surfer Joe festival. Three days of surf music. Maybe see you there...
Thanks da-ron, I'll let wife and kids know that the holiday plans have changed! hahaha

Welcome to SG101 Joe!
Try not to get too hung up on the gear.
It's all about the music, attitude and style.
Cheers,

Welcome Joe!!
Lots of great info and people here. SG101 rocks...err...surfs.
Like Jeff said "don't get hung up on the gear"....lol doesn't explain why after joining I now have 3 guitars dedicated to surf and a reverb tank.....lol Beware GAS ( guitar acquisition syndrome )is contagious.

Thanks guys, too late for GAS warning, I got it bad! The tone quest never ends... Just when I thought I had my blues rock sound perfect, (to my ears), I found out I needed, (want) all these new toys. My, those new Jazzmasters sure are lovely in surf green...
Cheers

Hello all. Only playing about 1 year. Mostly basic skills practice, but interest is mostly blues based rock, but love some surf. Been learning The lively ones Surf Rider, and Walk, Don't Run. For about 9 months....
Mostly played on a Strat.
Got my Squier VM Jaguar yesterday. Primo still learning it.
why the hell do these ship with 9s? I'll play the 9s a couple weeks just so I know it, then go to 10s, cause I have some.
I should have been here yesterday...

Welcome JTCNJ. You're in the right place. Search the archives for loads and loads of tips and info for playing surf music.
I'll give you one, if you want to do double picking, it's actually easier with thicker strings, something about the extra resistance actually helps with control and consistency. Plus, you get a stronger tone out of thicker strings. Plus, the floating trem works better with thick strings. Try .013's and work your way down from there if they're just too much.

Hi there!
My name is Timo and I am 38. I am really glad, that I discovered SG101 last summer! I have been lurking around a lot since then. So I thought a little introduction would be nice.
I really discovered surf music only last year! Shame on me, but better late than never. I knew the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and Dick Dale but not much more. Since the surf music bug bit me I have discovered so much thanks to this site! After the Birth of Surf compilations I started to listen to modern surf music. Now I have discovered the SG101 podcasts and am enjoying more and more new stuff (to me ) and the interviews.
I play guitar in a indie rock band. I and have been playing the guitar for way too long and my double picking still sucks (I'm working on it)
Oops, the introduction turned out to be way longer than planed, sorry!

Thanks for the welcome and the tip teiscofan! I will check out the "Day at the Beach" podcasts after I have listened to all SG101 podcasts! I commute to work by train for 20-30 minutes. That's a great opportunity to listen to podcasts!

Welcome fosco!! Commutes are a great time to check out some tunes! A great default should certainly be North Sea Surf Radio if you have ability to stream on your device. http://www.northseasurfradio.org/

Thanks Jamie! I've been listening to NSSR on my desktop. Now you reminded me that with my new mobile provider (only since 2 days) I indeed have the ability to stream without a limit

Hi all, I'm Jamie from the breezy and grey depths of southern England.
Only been listening to surf for the last few years (I was raised on a steady diet of Mudhoney, Nirvana, Fugazi and the like) but got really captivated by it. Attempting to start a band and hoping to improve my playing technique, so this seemed like the place to be.
I play a Mosrite Ventures for lead stuff, a very modified Squier Jazzmaster for chord-y stuff, and a Ricky 4003 for bass. Absolutely love all of them.
That's pretty much it I guess, cheers!
