Hi SG101 !
After several years of SG101's forum reading, I decide to post my first message... but not the last one, I promise!
So my name is... Mr Bidet. I am a 35yo French folk living 300km away from the sea. I never put a foot on a surf board, but I play instrumental rock that some could call Surf music...
I play guitar since I am 12yo. Hard rock / metal when I was a teenager (sorry!), then jazz guitar (I tried to in fact, unsuccessfully :-() then surf music since several years now.
I am not currently in a band. I am composing instrumental tunes that I register in my tiny home studio. I am trying to build my repertoire. I plan to share them with you soon… and get your feedback!

Hi all,
New member here! I've lurked for several months mainly reading about gear, but the surf obsession has grown to the point I should really get involved.
I’m 36 year old from Manchester, England and have played guitar since the age of 17. Currently a bassist in a gigging classic rock covers band, but aspiring to play guitar in a surf band of my own creation. I’ve loved surf/British instro for years but not really explored the genre much. I saw Man or Astroman back in 2000 and loved it and have liked Dick Dale for years.
I think listening to the Shadows has been some kind of gateway drug that’s lead me down the path to surf. I’ve been acquainting myself with the classics and some of modern surf bands and am a fan of everything from Messer Chups to The Madeira, Mermen, and others (mainly thanks to Greg Gardners Youtube channel) .
Gearwise I’m mostly set up for rock and have been looking at surf appropriate gear in recent months. After a recent hunt for a Strat or Jazzmaster I’ve finally ended up with a Burns King Cobra to practice my surf licks with- Great guitar! Why not keep it British!
Running that through a Vox Valvetronix for practice, but have a Blackheart Handsome Devil should I get that band going. Just need a reverb pedal….
I look forward to reading and contributing to the forum.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben, Welcome to SG101. Join in and enjoy yourself. I had to google the King Cobra. It is a cool, surfy looking guitar. Be sure to check out the Surfy Bear FET Reverb thread before you buy a pedal.
Cheers and Reverbs,
Tim

Welcome, Ben! Very happy to have you here! (And thanks for the nod to the Madeira - really appreciate that!) Good luck with getting that band together - playing surf music in a band is truly an amazing feeling!

Hi Ben - this is a great site with great members - full of useful helpful information and interesting opinions ( and unlike many sites people are able to have different points of view and opinions without disrespecting each other and WW3 breaking out) You'll enjoy it!
BTW - only been playing for a couple of years myself (since I was 63!)but been through a number of pedals - finally got a good deal on a Fender reissue reverb tank (for probably less than I've spent on pedals!) and it's the dog's whatsits - so for what it's worth I'd say look out for one of those.
Cheers
Roger

Cheers Roger and thanks. Are there many other Brits on here? Can't say I've noticed much of a Surf scene here in Manchester! Are you out gigging Roger?
I've looked at a few reverb tanks but most cost more than my amp did! I may have a go at building one- or I might start with a FRV or similar pedal and see how I get on.
Cheers,
Ben

I'm not sure how many other Brits there are on here Ben (perhaps Brian could make that a search criteria on the site ). No not gigging - not sure I'm good enough yet and got some health issues at the moment - but it is an aspiration! The FRV is a good pedal - gave mine to a friend when I got my tank ( got it for £360 on eBay so there are deals to be had) I'll be interested to hear how you get on!
Cheers

Welcome Ben. If you check the member map you can probably find some people close by. There's also a band map.

Hello Ben,
Yes, there are a few British on here. I'm a Burns owner myself; I used to have a Marquee, the budget "Marvin" model, which was lovely. I now have a Double-Six for doing jangly 60s stuff. I use a Squire Jag and Fender Start for instros.
Do check out the Surfy Bear Fet reverb. If I can make it, anyone can. And it sounds superb.

Awesome, thanks for the welcome guys. Lots of plaudits for the surfy bear so going to look in to that one. Will check out the member map and see who is nearabouts.
Clary- Thanks. I've really fallen on my feet with the Burns- It sound exactly how I wanted it to sound, which isn't often the case buying online.

New here. Consider myself very lucky to find this site. And an awesome site it is. Big fan of blues, rock, psychedelic and now surf music. I am a big fan of Randy Holden from New Improved. Always wondered why his guitar was so unique. I then found out his background was in surf music. So that's IT!
Happy to be here. Will try to get Randy to sign up.
