Nothing major to report, just a progress update. Myself, Vision Films, and our film editor in Hollywood, have been busily working on various things required by Vision prior to their production of the final DVD. We are still on track for a July release!
Everything is moving along nicely at this point. Vision Films has been wonderful to work with, and I'm confident the final package will look and sound really good.
I'm told that this will be a Region 0 DVD. That means it should play on most DVD players around the world (some DVD players might still have compatibility issues, especially if they are not multi-region players).
I can only hope that Tom would be happy and proud that his film is finally going to find itself on a commercial DVD soon. Tom recognized that the story and evolution of surf music had never been told before as a documentary film. He worked hard to get the story told as accurately as possible. I've just tried to facilitate the physical product. Way too much work went into this production to give up on it only because we lost the director too soon.
After 17 years, we are now 3 months away...
John, you are doing amazing work! I cannot wait to see this film and I'll be buying a DVD as soon as I can. If you have movie posters for sale as well, I'd add one to my purchase.

Fantastic news! Pretty crazy that in 2008 I was lurking around while you and Tom were interviewing PJ and Eddie, and performances from The Surfaris and Madeira were also filmed.

Since I've seen it twice now at SG101, what I'm really excited about is the potential for this to be seen by surf "outsiders"

Awesome!!! Thanks for the update, John!
Curious if you have any new info on Vision Films format intentions, will they be doing Blu-ray?

I'm told the DVD will be 720p. It should still look good, better than the projection quality at the last two SG101 events.

I've just learned that Vision Films plans to release "Sound of The Surf" on VOD platforms AND the physical DVD on, or about, July 1st. Along with the July 4 release of the "Legends of Surf Guitar" LP/CD, it'll be a surf media tsunami. I'm sure that both products will be available for sale at the SG101 Festival.

Thank you so much John for the best news I've seen on this topic in a long time. I'll be watching for a way to just order them direct. Glad it's happening while still above ground, lol. Bless you for all the work - and RESOLVE - you've brought to this.

Would that make it a Bluray? DVD max resolution is 480p in NTSC, 576 in PAL format. Most Bluray players upscale DVDs anyways, but just curious if its going to be coming out on Bluray.

Technically, I'm not an expert on this. But, Blu-ray DVDs typically have a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (1080p), which is full HD. Ultra HD Blu-rays, also known as 4K Blu-rays, can have a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels (2160p). "Sound of The Surf" will have a resolution of 720p, simple HD. It won't be a Blu-ray.

After nearly 18 years of work, and a path filled with challenges, obstacles, and delays, Vision Films has announced the DVD and streaming release of Director Tom Duncan's historical documentary of surf music, and it's now four weeks away!!! I don't know on WHICH streaming platforms this movie will initially appear, but more will follow in the months to come.

In retrospect, here's my SG101 post from October 8, 2021:
"A heart attack on 9/25 took Tom Duncan. I haven't posted anything about this until now out of respect for the situation, and for what his wife, Isariya, and close friends are having to deal with at the moment. Now that the news is out there, however....
"Completing "Sound of the Surf" is heavy on my mind now. It's been 15 years since Tom and I started on this adventure. There have been delays and roadblocks along the way that a major film studio probably would not have had to deal with. That's all in the past, however. Tom left us with an almost finished film and I know he would have wanted it shepherded into a final product. It was his strongest creative achievement, one that needs to be honored.
"I will be doing my best to see this to fruition in the weeks ahead. Right now, everything is on hold until the situation becomes a little more calm on the part of those closest to him and the film's current status can be audited. A Celebration of Life is planned for the near future.
"If you had been discussing anything with Tom...anything...please PM me with the details. At this point, I know nothing about where Tom stood with his Indiegogo campaign or promises he may have made to those who contributed funding over the last several months to complete the film.
"Thanks for your understanding, continued patience, and positive thoughts. As I've stated all along, despite all the delays, "Sound of the Surf" WILL get finished. And, if I have any say so in the matter, it will be finished as close as possible to Tom's vision of what he wanted this film to be and to accomplish."
As I've stated all along, SOTS "WILL get finished." It did.
Next month, the movie makes it to DVD and streaming platforms. I only have two regrets: one, that Tom Duncan is not able to celebrate his ultimate goal of having his film seen by the world, and two, that it's taken so long to reach this point where his film WILL be seen by the world.

This isn't the greatest photo, but I dug into my history and found this shot from August 4, 2008. There was a round table discussion with Eddie Bertrand, Paul Johnson, John Blair (obscured - sorry John!), and The Madeira. I don't know if this is in the final product but it was a very cool moment.
