Thank you Brian. As moderator, I didn't want to bring any of this to your attention and tried to self-police the thread I started. I wanted to be especially respectful to the legacy of this website as pertains to the future of surf and those that may come here in the future as they choose to be surf fans and musicians. There is a certain decorum that emanates through the site of tolerance and mutual respect. I felt the need to speak up in as kind a way as possible as a representative member of the site and the genre. I considered many of Sam's post to be trolling and not serving the surf community in any positive function.

I was uncomfortable saying anything because I didn't see it as intentional trolling in an effort to insult and mock the genre. I think he may have felt the need to defend himself by doing just that in the end. I started the thread as a question and gave some thoughts and goals on direction that I am taking with my band. I was interested in feedback on some of my ideas but more importantly what other ideas that "working" surf musicians and bands are doing moving forward.
Meanwhile, back to the thread, tonight The Kahuna Kings headline a huge show in downtown Akron, Ohio. We have Akron's own Seafoam Tsunami and a big changeup in the typical bands we would normally choose for our Annual Beach Bash, we have a reggae band. This isn't what you think it would be. They are more of a protest reggae band. Heavier music and the vocal delivery that is a very percussive and authoritarian. Our concert violinist is working behind the scenes scoring riffs to select and appropriate song selections. Looking forward to sharing a stage soon with another shred sound!

Should we edit out all the nonsense and maybe retitle this thread to "The future of the Kahuna Kings"? Or were you hoping more people would chime in with the future of their bands?

I'll leave it up to the moderator to decide. I think it's a bit messy and maybe a little unfocused at times. I do think there is some good content as we look forward into the genre. I have presented some of mine but I also think some of the other thoughts have been compelling. Brian runs the site. I'll defer to his judgement.

Brian, you can delete my 4 pages worth of content on here. That's got to be a big portion of this thread. I don't mind its water off a duck's back.
I thought this thread was about the future of Surf Music so maybe there should be two threads then? - one for the future of bands etc and another for where is this genre going as a whole?

Sam, I apologize for any hostility I had brought down upon you. I may have been part of the confusion.
Perhaps the thread moves forward speaking as to what new ideas and directions surf music and surf musicians will take in 2019. Perhaps none. I have thoroughly covered my specifics and maybe others will continue the thread. There were some compelling thoughts and hopefully even more to come.

Back to the subject. Where are people reaching out to gig this year? I have been hitting city's and municipalities. Several summer concert series events.

the future of surf music is eventually not in playing music but in having the time to write long posts about it. but it’s all cool  as long as we talk about it the genre is not dead.

Wow I missed a lot! Sam did instigate a flurry of activity tho! He also brings up great points in a pretty bad way, other than the cash thing. I advocate no editing.

This is characterized by extreme lo-fi recording and tons of noise. Vocals are on at least half the songs. The Mummies delve into this territory a couple times.
Surf that’s kinda metal
This COULD be very cool. The closest thing I’ve heard is actually my band’s drop D songs! Some black metal has elements of the surf style, but it’s nowhere near what I’d ever call surf.
Lounge surf (Friends of Dean Martinez?)
Jazz surf - The Bellharras are extremely proficient fellas playing this!
I’d lump spy surf in with detective surf, although I’m sort of fuzzy on how it differs from say, horror surf? James Bond?

Hey this is the real SurferJoe - I saw a lot of your live video's on YouTube and your interview of Paul Johnson a while back ….sorry about stealing your username on here a while back I didn't know you were even on here or anything when I joined. Playing surf music in the Tentakills is opening up doors to venues in my general area that I haven't played before. My other gigs have been country and punk rock, so I'm still playing music that mostly plays to a specific audience, but it may be a bit more appealing to a broader group of folks than the other bands that I've been in.
That's where surf is taking me in 2019.
