No Jake there wasn't such thing as surf until the 90s when the Bambi Molesters invented it. OK, serious question while these lists flow in. Who was the very first proper modern day European surf band.

I agree with just about everyone here that this is too damn tough (C'mon--One Madeira song? One Laika & the Cosmonauts song? Geez!!)
To narrow things down as best as possible, I took a different tack: What songs, upon hearing for the first time, did I like so much I wanted my band to play them? If the song is worth learning, teaching to your band, and showing off to the public in your area, but not something you wrote, it therefore must be good, right?
So here's my list, in no special order:
- Atomic Mosquitos--Hank Scorpio
- The Exotics--Lariat
- Laika & the Cosmonauts--Boris the Conductor
- Aqualads--Washout
- The Noseriders--Corduroy Summer
- Shadow Men on a Shadowy Planet--Egypt Texas
- Insect Surfers--MIG Alley
- Los Straitjackets--Rockula
- Untamed Youth--Contentment
- The Madeira--Jungle Drums

I've taken a long time to get to this since this is so freaking hard! I'm going to break my list into two parts: Songs that have already been mentioned that I can't not put on the list, and songs that haven't been mentioned yet but I think deserve a top 101 spot. Here:
Wooza (Ben J)
USA
Unskippable:
1. Los Twang! Marvels - Sea of Glory
2. The Surf Coasters - Intruder
3. The Barbwires - La Caja del Muerto
Add to the list!:
4. The Madeira - The Saracen
5. The Space Cossacks - The Space Victory Theme
6. The Sellcancers - Typhoon Sand Beach
7. The Bitch Boys - Suez Canal Affair
8. The Surf Coasters - Last Train
9. The Space Rangers - Mr. Lou
10. The Bambi Molesters - Sun Stroke

It's interesting to see the trends. Clearly, I like some songs that the rest of you like. It's as clear that I like some of the bands that you like. It's even more clear that some of my choices are out there somewhere.
And since I can, here's a bit of why to go with the what.
- Jon & The Nightriders - Depth Charge
Bought Fiberglass Jungle on a trip back to Madison from Austin. First listened to it in a U-Haul moving back to Madison from Austin. Hit me like a punch in the gut.
- Frankie And The Poolboys - Ewa On The Beach
Just a great melody.
- The Swiv-O-Matics - Metallic Blue Bikini
For a long time, all I had was an except from this. Then I got the CD, based on playing that 30 seconds over and over and over...
- The Volcanoes - Doheney Dawn
Another one from the same trip as Fiberglass Rocket. One of the tunes that got me into the genre.
- The Atomic Mosquitos - Love Canal
Had it as a freebie for a long time. Darned near wore a groove in the hard drive playing it.
- The Boss Martians - Double A Growler
Sure, the BMs had a bunch of great stuff. But this is the one I can play in my head. I can't do that with XKE!
- Dick Dale & Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pipeline
It was this or Nitro. But guess which I play more often?
- The Bomboras - War Of The Satellites
The third from the infamous road trip back home. Another great band, but which song? Well, for me the one with traces of Telstar in it!
- The Ghastly Ones - Ghastly Stomp
Yes, many prefer Haulin' Hearse. But this is a great piece.
- The Madeira - Tribal Fury
Another one of those great bands that has to be on the list, but which song? Well, this one. And the only one on the list I've heard played live.
