Norm, I don't know how often the Doc comes around to visit here, so I just want to let you know that you can download all of his songs as mp3 from a website he created:
https://sites.google.com/site/doclegume/

Two albums and one EP full of great stuff even without the videos!

Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

Simon,
Thanks. The Doc does great stuff. He should make some of the rebirth surf top ten lists.

Now back to classic surf discussion.

Later,
Norm

This is new to me. Nice choice.

Cool! The Pacifics! I never heard them before. Here's what Peter Hood of the Atlantics said about the Pacifics in an interview:

"I think the funniest band of all was The Pacifics. I think Nat Kipner put them together In an attempt to match and swamp us. That's why he called them The Pacifics! He gave them as close as possible the same sound as us and put them on the bill against us. They weren't that bad either! Anyway, they disappeared soon after because like anything else, you can't really imitate someone for too long."

Good to finally hear them - Peter was right, they're pretty good!

There's going to be some overlap here with other lists, but after the first few were posted, I stopped reading them until I could come up with my own. No particular criteria for this list; some are here because they seem to capture the essence of surf music, some for being slightly off the beaten track, and some for their sheer exuberance -- all for being awesome!

  1. Link Wray: Jack the Ripper
  2. The Surf Teens: Moment of Truth
  3. Bruce Johnston: Jersey Channel Islands - Part 7
  4. The Chevells: Let There Be Surf
  5. The Bobby Fuller Four: Misirlou
  6. The Gamblers: Moon Dawg!
  7. The Illusions: Jezebel
  8. The Original Surfaris: Exotic
  9. The New Dimensions: Cat on a Hot Foam Board
  10. The Lively Ones: Surf Rider

Interesting, Ivan. The fact that places are precious, and you give two each to two bands really shows your respect. Also, War of the Worlds is a nice "outside" choice...itself being an "outside" surf tune (i.e. pushes the envelope) which also shows the credit you give for a band trying to take the genre forward. It really creates "soundscapes" and imagery (in this case, apocalyptic)...much like your own music.

Thanks, websurfer, I think you hit the nail right on the head when it comes to my thought process for this exercise. All of these tracks were extremely influential on me, and really set the template for what I wanted to do with my two surf bands. These are the tracks that really blew my mind upon first hearing them, and showed me that there are basically no limits to surf music. I love the more trad stuff, too, but the stuff that really got me excited when I first discovered surf music were all these really adventurous and unusual songs, as well as the really powerful and heavy ones. That's when it clicked that you really don't have to approach this as a nostalgia/retro thing (not that there's absolutely anything wrong with that), but as contemporary music that can hopefully resonate with people living in modern times and raised on all the '60s, '70s, and '80s rock.

Took me a while to come up with this. It would have been much easier to do top 25. I left some really great songs off here. But at the end of the day, these are the ones I love the most, and I think that's the heart of this.

As you can see, I like more of the exotic/ethnic sounding surf, hence my top choices.

Josheboy
USA

  1. Latin'ia - The Sentinals
  2. Pintor - Pharos
  3. Mar Gaya - Fender IV
  4. Surfari - The Original Surfaris
  5. Miserlou - Dick Dale & The Del-Tones
  6. Surf Rider - THe Lively Ones
  7. Moment of Truth - Dave Myers & The Surftones
  8. Cat on a Hot Foam Board - The New Dimensions
  9. Pipeline - The Chantays
  10. The Hearse - The Astronauts

Along those same lines, I really like "The 4th Dimension". I'd make that my #11.

Yes! Was going to put this one on my list! Can I make that my #11? Smile

Like so many have already said. Picking 10 is tough. I've never been a big fan of "best of" lists because stuff always gets overlooked in favor of really obvious choices... But I'm really diggin' people's choices... Some real gems and some real surprises.
