Chosen by their influence upon me. I know there's some Eleki in there but I tend to approach my appreciation for this music with less genre specific confines.
The new list will be harder as I'm still learning about "new", fabulous bands everyday that many of you have known for years.

I am sort of surprised by those who picked Bombora. It seems like more of you prefer the cover of that song by the Original Surfaris than you do the original version by the Atlantics.

Norm

It's not a cover - it's a totally different song with the same title.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I'm rooting for the Fender IV. They're making a strong case for themselves.

I see someone listed Ghost Hop by the Surfmen. I really like that song. You don't hear it mentioned often. Glad it made someone's list.

I don't think I saw Caterpillar Crawl by the Strangers. It was pre-Surf (done around 1959). I thought that song was good enough to make someone's list.

At first glance, it seems like most of the very good songs made comeone's list. Among us, we seemed to have hit nearly all, with the exception, perhaps, of the Spotnicks and the Ozzie surf bands.

Norm

The two Bomboras are completely different songs, they just happen to have the same name.

I dunno, the Spotnicks (while incredibly awesome) were not a surf band. Neither were the Eleki bands mentioned.

Oops. 2 different Bomboras. I probably knew that some time ago. Write it off as a senior moment. Does anyone else hear some of Shake and Stomp in the Original Surfaris' Bombora?

Norm

Someone finally listed Apache by the Shadows. I never thought of Apache as surf. However, I do think it is one of (if not the) greatest guitar instrumentals of all time. Hank Marvin finally got included. Thanks Ron.

I beg to differ with you, Brian. When Dick Dale plays Hava Nagila most consider that surf. So why not when the Spotnicks play it. I consider the Spotnicks (with their funky space costumes) to be the first new wave surf band. They would fit right in with many newer surf band. Just a few decades ahead of their time.

I generally go by the definition in John Blair's discography of surf music.

The Spotniks started in 1961 in Sweden, the same time surf music was just getting started in the States. I don't think they were even aware of surf music until years later. They are more of a "Euro-Instro" Shadows influenced band. They used echo instead of reverb, there are no Dick Dale style glissandos in their music (at least early stuff), etc. Lots of instrumental guitar driven bands played folk songs, that was never an exclusive to surf music.

I think it is important that when picking the classic surf songs from the sixties we actually pick surf music selections. Smile Call me crazy. That largely means American bands, mainly from California, from 1961-1965, maybe 1996. Sure there were surf bands from other parts of America, and Australians were lucky enough to hear both the Shadows Euro-Instros and American surf music. That's why you got the mind-blowing Atlantics, who seemed to borrow from both the Shadows and American surf.

My two cents of course. I knew some interesting discussion would arise from making these lists.

It is "interesting" to see what people consider surf music. You don't have to agree with my definition. Big Grin

I did not intend to influence anyone's lists. Seeing what each person's favorites is very interesting. So, we are having some side discussions. I agree with Brian, in that you should freely post your favorites, no matter what you consider classic surf to be. That is part of what makes this exercise so interesting (determining how each of us defines surf).

Keep the lists coming.

I always felt Hank Marvin was an influence on surf. A lot of surf players are rather fond of Apache. No reverb in that, strictly echo. Remember not everyone used reverb. There were two schools of thought, the wet (reverb) and the dry.

In 1961, not too many folks called this stuff surf yet. That name took a bit to become wide spread. Here in the Midwest, we were doing covers of Let's Go Trippin and Mr. Moto right along with Walk Don't Run. I don't recall hearing that music called surf (around here) until more like 63.
