I dig this more laid-back vibe too. The Nep-tunes, SURFER'S HOLIDAY from 1963.

Billy Mure - Guitars in Space. Supersonic Guitars, 1958. Pre-dawn of Surf?

Don't forget the Frogmen from 1961!

I don't know if this is talked about enough. "Underwater" by the Frogmen was one of a handful of "surf" singles released that year--and the first perhaps?--to associate aquatic imagery with an instrumental. The Beach Boys "Surfin" (also released on the same label later that year) borrowed a riff from "Underwater".

Noel, I really dig Billy Mure!!

It was an early thrift store find, SUPERSONIC GUITARS IN FLIGHT, when I was in my early 20's that got me hooked. Super cool pre-surf guitar instrumentals that I'm sure had an influence on kids picking up a guitar in the surf era.

Here's Billy doing CARAVAN which was also done by THE VENTURES and others from SUPERSONIC GUITARS IN HI FI.

Awesome moody tune featured in the SURF AGE NUGGETS collection. SOPHIA by The Charades Band, a Latino group from California's San Joaquin Valley.

Also featured in Al Garcia & the Rhythm Kings Exotic and .., which includes Christina and Sophia, two cuts by the Charades Band (the instrumental support for the Charades or Latin Knights vocal combo). Members of the Charades band were in and out of bands with the members of the Rhythm (and/or Soul) Kings, including (post surf) the Rhythm Kings. Both bands hale from the Bakersfield area and there are survivors of both bands still up there playing. A while back I posted a picture with members of these bands, Tony Hilder, and Bruce Morgan. The regrettable thing about the picture was that it was apparently taken by Bob Hafner, so he's not in it.

Thanks Tuck. I missed that the first time around. Interesting stuff about Tony Hilder. He's one of those names that pops up in early surf music from the early Beach Boys to The Original Surfaris. He's credited as producer on Moment of Truth by the Original Surfaris which happens to have another Latino guy in it, piano player Al Valdez.

Here's the live MOMENT OF TRUTH which is amazing...

By 1965 surf music had branched off to Hot Rod and Honda themed stuff. Here's a great Gary Usher produced tune, FREEFALL by The Devons, with guitar by Richie Podolor. It was the flipside of the single, HONDA BIKE.

Some people associate fuzz with the later 60's but Hal Blaine and crew were unleashing it in 1963! Check out the fuzz-fueled GREEN MONSTER by Hal Blaine & the Young Cougars.

You're welcome. I love that picture. Smile

Here's the live MOMENT OF TRUTH which is amazing...

And it is!

I think Hilder produced everything the Original Surfaris did from after he "bought them" (or their "catalog") from Victor Regina after their first single, up to the point where he dropped out of producing for politics and they started producing themselves (just a few final singles), which was a around a year later, I think.

Hilder's ultra-conservative politics are usually cited as the thing that motivated him dropping out of music, but the trouble over the (Original or Fullerton) Surfaris' name conflict and possible ramifications over their cover of the Impacts' Wipeout vs. the (Glendora) Surfaris hit Wipe Out! may have been factors too. This whole situation is what caused the Del-Fi album to abort, only to appear a generation later as the Sundazed album.

And Jon & the Nightriders do it as Super Jet Rumble. Burned into my brain from back when this was The Album that Opened my Eyes.

Thanks Tuck! How could I forget the Jon & The Nightriders version?

Here's a gem I ran across today, one that The Untamed Youth covered in the early 90's.

-Damon.

"Sea-N-Shore"... awesome tune! This 45 and its flipside, "Metalflakes" were written by Jim Masoner of THE LIVELY ONES! Jim managed the band as well.
