"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck

Hello all,

A lot of great tunes. I just spent the night listening to these. Most I had not heard in a long time. Some were new to me. I just want to say thanks to all who have contributed to this great list of songs.

Hope this thread stays near the top. It is worth revisting.

Someone commented about many of these being teenagers and only putting out a couple records. That really is not surprising. Back in the 60s surf was the territory of local gargage bands. Of course the bands were short lived. The guys would graduate from high school. Then the members either went to various colleges or they got drafted. Some of the guys would try to form another band at their college. Even college bands were short lived.

Man, that was a great time. No responsibilities except keeping gas in your car. Playing parties on Friday or Saturday nights. We had a barn converted to a teen dance club nearby. Even the roller rink would have bands in for a dance on Sunday nights. Every town you went to had a few great bands that never got known.

Thanks again to all,
Norm

That Phantom 5 Graveyard song sounds very similar to a song we used to wear out listening to as kids in the '60s. I just can't remember the name.

It was on a blue label, maybe had Deltone on there somewhere. I thought that maybe it was Dick Dale, but could not find it in his album listings.

A difference with Graveyard is that at the end of the verse when the pause happens, there was a loud scream. This surf song was probably one of the first horror crossovers.

Anybody have any ideas about who recorded it or what it was called?

Well, it kind of reminds me of the Mission Impossible Theme x Green Onions. But your description somehow reminds me of Cemetary Stomp by the Essex.

Hey Tuck,

That's a cool song, but not the one. It's a real mystery to me.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Paul

Amazing what's out there on Youtube.

-Damon.

Anybody know the history of THE RANGERS? B-side is called 'Four On The Floor' by Al Dee. Ghost Riders is similar to the Ram-Rods version.image

Not sure if I posted this one already, but dig the amazing blend of a splashy rhythm guitar, combined with a dryer melodic lead guitar and very complimentary electric piano. So damn cool, if you ask me.

Indeed! A killer teen surf stomper. Sweaty kids in matching jackets pounding out their wild surf rhythm to swooning girls in capri pants on this one for sure. Big Grin

Murphy the Surfie by THE JOY BOYS. Despite their kinda silly sounding name, THE JOY BOYS had this top ten Australian hit in 1963 which became a Surf music standard...

Great call, Norm! The Joy Boys were great, and a big influence on the Atlantics. Through help of an Aussie friend, I was able to acquire their super-rare CD comp, which is chock full of goodness. My favorite thing by them is their whole 'surf' (as in the Aussie variant) album from '63 named "Surfin' Stompin' Joy Boys" - Murphy the Surfie was from that album, but a whole bunch of other Shadows and Atlantics influenced tracks, too. Here's the CD cover I was able to find online:

Murphy the Surfie is a great track alright. You are lucky get a copy of that Joy Boy's comp Ivan. I live in Australia and have never been able to find it except online for $200 so I bought the next best thing, Ace's Board Boogie comp, it has about eight Joy Boys songs plus a bunch of other cool surf tracks from Australia. I believe the Joy Boys name comes from the fact that they were the backing band for a country singer called Col Joye.

I've never seen that comp either, Ivan. Looks great. I only have the BOARD BOOGIE comp as well. Quite good! Here's the cover ...

Yep, that's a great one for sure, Norm! Another one that's not quite as great but still very good is "The W&G Instrumental Story". It has the original "Bajjad" on it (as covered by the Apemen), among many, many other great tracks. Really captures the '60s Aussie surf sound.
