New Release: The Atlantics - Flight of the Surf Guitar 21st Anniversary Edition

In 1963 The Atlantics were at the forefront of surf music in Australia, with their classic surf instrumental "Bombora" sitting for eight weeks at No. 1 in the Top 40 charts around Australia.

In 1999, in response to a growing demand from surf music enthusiasts around the world, The Atlantics - Peter, Jim, Bosco and new member Martin, got together in the studio for the first time in thirty years to recreate that surf pounding sound that made "Bombora" such a classic.

The result was Flight of the Surf Guitar. Featuring seventeen tracks, comprising fourteen all new originals, together with brand new recorded versions of three of their most popular songs, "The Crusher", "Rumble and Run" and of course, "Bombora."

This album has now been remixed and remastered for a new generation. It also contains 2 brand new, never released, tracks - Maroubra Beach written by Martin Cilia & Islands in the Surf written by Jim Skiathitis.

So sit back, hang five, and listen once again to the sound of . . . The Atlantics!

You can buy it from Leo's Den, Amazon & Bandcamp, coming soon to Double Crown Records.

Shoot the Pier New Album - Chill

image

Shoot the Pier announces a new album of ten tunes entitled Chill - written and recorded over the past year and a half during the lock down. Writing this record was our therapy during a time the world was seriously hurting. The album is important to us too, because it will be the last Shoot the Pier record for some time. Ellie gets married in two weeks on June 12th, and shortly after that heads back to the University of Edinburgh to begin her studies for a PhD in Creative Writing. In January of 2012, Ellie and I gave an interview with Cousin Mary on KFJC just after our second record was released. Mary asked Ellie what she hoped to be when she grew up. Ellie was 15, (and already a pretty good bassist and keyboardist I might add), and she told Mary she loved writing and hoped to one day be a novelist. She has always been determined to be good at whatever she does once she sets her mind.

We decided to call the album Chill because we could only write more surfchill-ish tunes during the dark period we were all experiencing. And we thought, as we all get through this, maybe everybody will just want to take a breath and chill. Some of the sections we liked in a few tunes we purposely left redundant. We were playing and really liked a section and said, "just play it again''... and we left it all in. As always, we only did a couple takes on each instrument, trying to capture what we believe to be the "early soul" (and mistakes) for all to hear. Two of our favorite tunes on the record, Swimming Naked with Amphitrite and The Ghost of Edinburgh, we just let them take us to what we think are still pretty cool places. The last tune on the record, My Spanish Lady, is a simple Spanish classical guitar piece that just came to me one night. We recorded it in about an hour, and Ellie said she wanted it to be our father/daughter dance at her wedding in two weeks. One other thing, my Spanish wife Maria played the castanets on that tune, because not even the devil himself can play the castanets without that gene.

The record is now available digitally everywhere. We didn't print CDs, because very few seem to want them anymore. We do recommend the album from our bandcamp site, if you don't have a preference. Because, I seem to constantly play with the mix and master and am able to upload the latest versions on bandcamp. But, all sites are good.

Thanks everyone for your support over the past almost twelve years. It's been a blast. We will see what the future brings. Stay safe, and much love.

The Surf Hermits - Hang Zen

image

SRW142 The Surf Hermits - Hang Zen available on CD and download here - https://thesurfhermits.bandcamp.com/album/hang-zen

This is the way.

The Surf Hermits are part old west gunslinger, part wandering samurai, and part pipeline-shredding surfstravaganza. Featuring twangy guitar driven instrumentals, The Surf Hermits’ debut album, Hang Zen is distinctly original and yet somehow familiar to fans of surf, spaghetti westerns, and 60s garage sounds.

New album by The Routes (Japan) "Instrumentals II"

image

My band The Routes will release a new instrumental album "Instrumentals II" on Groovie Records at the end of this month.

The album is a follow-up to our 2012 "Instrumentals" album, and features another 10 original instrumental cuts.
The album ranges from spaghetti western to surf, and makes stops in garage and stompin' rock & roll territory along the way; taking influence from Link Wray, Dick Dale, Trashmen, Ventures, Terauchi Takeshi, and the Strummin' Mental compilations. Recorded in mono, this album is raw and LOUD (surf music with garage production).

"Instrumentals II" will be available on LP (color vinyl limited to 100 copies, black vinyl 400 copies), and digital.
You can check out the album and preorder vinyl on the Groovie Records Bandcamp page.

ARNO DE CEA & THE CLOCKWORK WIZARDS' new album.

" Retrofuturisme volume II " is the fifth and new album by Arno De Cea & the Clockwork Wizards.

Formed in 2008 on the French “Silver Coast" by three musicians involved in the Surf, Noise and Garage Rock scenes (The Irradiates, Stef & Arno, The Taikonauts, Antena Tres, Shunatao…), Arno De Cea & The Clockwork Wizards try to set Surf Music in the modern age by adding Punk Hard Core intensity and Noise Rock inventiveness.

To set the things clearer, it's like having Dick Dale swapping his guitar for a flamethrower while being backed by a robust, frenetic and tortuous rhythm section.

Throughout the years, those "Brutal Surf Music" purveyors used to tour around the European continent from Lisbon to Berlin, Alkmaar to Beograd, without forgetting Livorno to eat an ice cream by the Mediterranean sea.

2021 sees the band releasing its fifth album, "Retrofuturisme volume II " (EU: ATRDR/Calico Records/Les Productions de l’Impossible – USA: Ottis Media Records) to complete a rich discography also loaded with some split records and several compilations appearances.

The trio here reveals its interest for some musical freaks like Sun Ra or Chrome contributing to set the band a little more apart from "traditional” Surf Music, and showing its ability to have an unusual rhythmic and melodic approach to the genre.

All that was once resumed by a member of the audience assisting at one of their shows : “Well, it is the most well organised sonic bloody mess I have ever experienced in my life!” Fredrik Thordendal.

Electric Heaters release new live EP!

image

A new live EP from Boston's Electric Heaters.

Live at the Burren was recorded in the Back Room of the Burren Pub in Somerville, MA on January 10, 2020. It wasn’t meant to be a time capsule, but it ended up being the last big show we did before the pandemic. Full of live energy and the Heaters’ characteristic mix of tight grooves and occasional chaotic noise, it’s a document of a carefree band in a pre pano time. I dug out the files a couple months ago, and realized, this isn’t half bad! So warts and all, ladies & gentlemen: The Electric Heaters.

  1. Taco Volcano—A latin tinged spy caper. Too spicy for your taste? Cha Cha Cha!

  2. Copley Soul—Stomp the floor to this Boston style dance number.

  3. Bowling Green Massacre—Late nights. Devious Schemes. Alternate Facts. Was it all just a dream?

  4. Pouncy Flip—A little bit country and a little bit psychedelic freak out!

  5. Nayang Beach—Time to relax on the chillest beach in all of Thailand. Subai, Subai.

  6. Shutter Island—Like it’s noir namesake, all is not as it seems in this tune.

The Electric Heaters:
Matt Heaton-Guitar
Dave Piper-Bass
Jared Seabrook-Drums

Available on April 2 at Bandcamp, everywhere else on April 15.
