My favorite tune on that comp is the great "Wailin' In West Covina" by the Spectrums. Unfortunately it's only a rehearsal demo and the sound quality leaves some to ask for.

THE ATLANTICS: Flight Of The Surf Guitar Backing Tracks.

Hasn't arrived yet but it'll be a blast playing along Razz

Waitin' on the arrival of The Surfites CD too Smile

Ivan! Klas! Thanks for the cool insights on Beach Party! I got that CD months ago as well and I'm sorry to say I stuck it on the shelf too. Now with some insight, I'm getting it out again and bet I'll enjoy it ten times more Smile

Yeah! It's a killer tune, bad sound and all.

About two hours after my last post on this topic, these all arrived in the mail:

Deadly Ones/Nobles - "It's Monster Surfing Time"/"Come Surf With Me"
Treble Spankers - "Araban"
Bomboras - "It Came From Pier 13"
Thunderchiefs - "Dig"
Aquasonics - "Play Songs For The Surfing Set"

Best. Day. Ever.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Warren where on Earth did you find Araban? Shocked

I got that and the Deadly Ones/Nobles CD from Rama Lama Records' mailorder--http://www.ramalamarecords.com/

They still have one copy of "Hasheeda" and the Deadly Ones/Nobles CD, but apparently it was their last copy of "Araban."

Thanks Warren. Looks like you got a great batch of stuff there.

I find this album in the vinyl stack at a Goodwill. Pretty good for a buck.

Science friction burns my fingers.

Eleven years after hearing "honeybomb" on the cowabunga box, i decided to take the plunge (get it?) and buy some mermen cds.

just arrived:
"krill slippin'"
"food for other fish"
"songs of the cows"

on its way:
"live at the haunted house"

so far, i truly, seriously love this stuff -- especially "cows" and "other fish." "krill" has that painful 1980s-production problem, but i'm sure i'll get past that at some point. i know they're playing some shows in sanfran in april, but are these guys still seriously "active," as in, do they record anymore?

also just arrived:
the atlantics -- "the best of ..."

a lot of it sounds like a modern version of the shadows, which is awesome.

I just got Randy Holden 'early works 64-66' and its pretty sweet. The 'Sons of Adam' stuff is OK, kind of like Jefferson Airplane or the Turtles, but the Fender IV stuff is outta this world! Freaking awesome. Who else was doing ska/surf type rythm back then?

Ha, IronMaiden, I got mine today too! the Fender IV stuff rips, though obviously some I allready had.

but the sons of Adam stuff, I totally dig it too! the singing is not as wild as I like it on garage, but there are some incredible fuzz sounds there, very multi influenced songwriting - beatles to J. airplane. Some of it sounds a bit 'ahead of its tme' too, but Im no specialist in garage.

anyway, recomended cd!

Haole Kats - Kilawaimea

Just saw them play live at the Mai Kai. Very fun sets and cool vibe. So I bought their CD.

CUTBACK

Klas
I just won the Dave Myers Effect 1967 LP after several tries. Haven't got it yet though and have prior only heard the 3 tracks included on the infamous Surf Crazy comp.

image

I got the LP the other day and it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. There are a couple of pretty cool Davie Allan type of fuzz tracks but the rest of the album isn't that interesting I think. One reason for that is Myers' lead guitar, which often sounds too much 1967 for my taste both in sound and playing. No surprise maybe but I was hoping for more Davie Allan style numbers. Conclusion: Myers was definitely more interesting 3-4 years earlier with the Surftones.

That was my conclusion, too, based on the three tracks from this album found on the "Surf Crazy" comp. (You really gotta pick up that comp, Klas - cut out about 3 or 4 tracks, and you'd LOVE it.)

I know I would really like a vast majority of the Surf Crazy tracks but the few bad ones are so horrible and out of place that I refuse to have anything to do with that comp.

The Haunted House CD is a watershed moment for me as it was the sole disc that introduced me to surf/instro. Once I saw The Torquays play live across from my apartment in Irvine one day I was hooked for good.

Dang it--I ordered a copy of that LP a few days ago. Oh well. Thanks for the warning--I definitely won't get my hopes up.

1992 reissue CD (with 7 bonus tracks) that has been out of print for some time and I had to pay £15 for a used copy. Well worth the money even though I already had almost half of the tracks.
