and Richie Allen's Surfers Slide. cool to have them official with all the liner notes and bonus tracks, but not must haves lots of filler IMHO.......

Recently won this 1965 LP which is very similar to the four "Beat! Beat! Beat!" albums from the same period, by mainly containing contemporary cover songs. 11 instros and one vocal (the latter is a great version of "Long Tall Sally" and maybe one of the first examples of the "going ape" style that became quite common a couple of years later during the Japanese GS boom). Among the instros, I really like the versions of "Goldfinger", "Do The Clam", "Diamond Head" and "Sentimental Guitar".

As far as I know it's not a comp but a regular 1965 album of theirs.

Anyway, I did get a cool instro comp in the mail today called "Guitar Mood", subheaded "Quite a collection of rare instrumentals from around the world!".

It's hard for me to post here, because I'm fortunate enough to receive most new releases as promos for review in The Continental. However, someone said that most of the people posting here are saying their latest purchases are first wave or 90's releases. I just wanted to say that there are really some strong releases out there that have just come out in the first part of 2007. Wormtone has two of 'em - the Thunderchiefs and The Aquasonics. I'd also check out Hammond Beat Records - they have a new Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. CD out that's amazing, as well as reissues of CD's by The Nelsonics and The Special Agents. The new Jon Rauhouse CD, although not surf and not 100% instro, is also getting a lot of play at home (he is a guitarist/lap steel player in Neko Case's band and used to be in the Mekons I believe).

I just got a copy of the Thunderchiefs Dig cd. My first listen, I thought "yeah it cool" my second listen I thought "wow, this is actually quite good!" my third listen, it was " Holy !@#$%, I really like this!"

I sat down with a guitar last night, and learned about 5 of them. Simple songs played extremely well. my favorite kind of surf.

I just got 'The Madeira' "sandstorm"...These guys rock!

I just picked up Dig by the Thunderchiefs - great sound! ..clean up front guitar with totally perfect garage drum sound - but not too far down in the mix.

Just last week I received my copy of The Diamondheads' "Diamondheads at Dusk" - it is a phenomenal record. I can't recommend it highly enough. Very, very tight playing. Great production which perfectly captures the tone that these guys have down pat.

While I hope to pick up some of the other new releases, this one will keep me happy for some time.

I bought this one some six to twelve months ago, and somehow never even opened it - just forgot about it. I came across it a couple of days ago, and thought I'd finally check it out. I was surprised how good it is! It's early-sixties stuff that's mostly related to Gary Paxton, and about half of it is instrumental. The vocals are a mixed bag - some really cool Beach-Boys-like stuff with gorgeous harmonies ('Dear Henry Ford' by the Zip-Codes is awesome, gives me the chills), some r&b-like surf/drag (including the original version of "The Scavenger", later covered by DD), some girl-group like stuff, some garagey stuff. Some of it is great, some not so much. As far as the instrumentals, some of them are just amazing! The highlights:

Kenny & the Sultans: The Wipe Out (no, not THAT one!) - supremely moody, like sad Link Wray - but with reverb and echo

Vince & the Waikiki Rumblers: Waikiki Rumble - awesome lead-piano surf!

The Torquays: Escondido/Surfer's Cry - if it had been released, it would have been a simply classic double-sided 7"

Gene Moles: Kaha Huna (Goddess Of Surfing) - starts off like lame '60s game show music, but Moles shows off some amazing guitar playing, completely rescuing the song - man, that guy could PLAY!

Bucky & the Dales: Firewater - an American-Indian-sounding track intercut with real native American music, but done in a totally seamless way - it works really well, despite not having almost any melody

Lonnie McLaughlin & the Premiers: War Path - oh man, the repeated muted double-stops just make me smile every time! And it's got a flute!!

There are a few other decent instros, but I think the CD is totally worth the price of admission just for the above seven tracks. Really rare stuff - and what's amazing is that even though it's so obscure, it's GOOD! How many cool sixties surf instros actually ARE THERE?? God, there seems to be an endless supply of them....

Recommended.

Link Wray: "Big City After Dark" on Vinyl. Just need "Some Kinda Nut" to complete the 4 volume Norton series.

I'm waiting for "Digging Out" and "Introducing Jackie and the Cedrics" (10") in the mail from Norton.

I should start buying some more of the recent Double Crown releases too!
