Sorry for joining this discusion so late. I sometimes take a little vacation from the internet for a couple of days. I can recommended that!

I'll try my best to write software to support these efforts, but I can't provide the content myself.

This is so true! Brian does a hell of a job, keeping this site going, there should be a Nobel price for Surf Forum Webmasters!

But the content are we! We all make this site to what it is now. Every little bit of content counts! Old veterans sharing bits of priceless information. Newbies asking questions that others don't dare to ask, but everybody can pickup the information through the answers. People sharing great youtube finds of music and bands. Other people sharing photo's of gigs and festivals ( Big Grin ). Geartips, help with tabs and chords, etc etc etc etc...

This website is like a wikipedia for surfmusic, I can't think of a genre that has a source like SG101! We are lucky, truly lucky with Brians efforts and all the people who post priceless information (too many to mention)!

And through this website I met so many nice people, some of which I met earlier this year at the Surfer Joe festival. Again priceless... I'm on FB since beginning of this year, and like I said before, I hate every minute of it. Yes, I could end my FB carreer, but somehow I'm allready hooked to all the funny memes, casual friendrequests and I also discovered some great bands that I wouldn't have found elsewere. But it is no SG101 substitute!

Here are my 2cts:
- As a frequent photo poster, I don't mind using my website or Photobucket to host the photo's. But this way you don't build a photo archive on this site. I would gladly help, or even do some work as a photo editor, to archive relevant photo's... It would give this site a visual boost.
- I would welcome a more prominent review section. Now reviews are part of the forumpost and I think it can ad to the magazine concept to seperate it. (Maybe take a look at punknews.org)
- I support the band of the month feature. It could be like something like a relay / estafette. So band A is chosen band of the month and nominates band B for next month. But it can't be a band from that country or state were band A is from. The band of the mond page could consist of a standard list of question each band has to anwer. This way it would be not that much work.

Looking forward to SG101 3.0!

Interesting read.

Personally, I think the net loss/gain with a move to FB would be one enormous loss. FB has it’s purposes and usefulness, but it isn’t a resource like this.

It’s been mentioned that sometimes it looks a little unwelcoming for a new member to be told to use the search engine for their answers. I’ve learnt a load of stuff from here, and as someone who “searches first, and asks questions second” have often had no problem finding information here regarding gear, music etc. However, some people are not that good at searching or are just used to having questions answered on other websites. Also, if they’re a bit more thin-skinned, they may be put off by being asked to use the search option. With this in mind, would it be possible to have something that is very prominent and in your face; rather than simply “Search”, perhaps a page with a series of buttons “SG101 Gear Search” “SG101 Band Search” “SG101 Audio Search” or something similar? Obvious it would just be a portal with all buttons directing you to the same cache of threads. Or is this just re-inventing the wheel?

I presume the 101 part of the website’s title is from the USA education system of annotating a syllabus? Would someone be able to develop a newby gear page? Guitars, Basses, Drums, Strings, Amps, Picks, Reverb, Effects, etc. with the basics/starting point for the more obvious questions. Or just use this as another portal to the more popular basic gear threads? You could even have a newby surf history page.

If this has been mooted in earlier posts on this thread, apologies.

I've been playing this type of music in one form or another for over 30 years... There has never been a better resource for news and information on this particular subject. All forums have issues with occasionally going off the rails... But SG101 is essential.

A lot (all?) of the "magazine" type features being talked about can be done today with the current website between the forums, the wiki, and the news posts. Album of the month, tablature exchange, songwriting exchange, instructional videos, etc. are all possible. Someone just needs to step up and do it. I look at this like an open source software community. We are all volunteers here with limited time. But if you have an itch to scratch (say you like to write software, or you like to write reviews, or you'd like to try making videos, or you'd like to dissect songs and write tab) AND you like surf music here is your platform for that. The rest of the community will thank you and you will scratch your itch.

Along these lines I had a few ideas borrowed from another forum. One thing that helped generate discussion was having scheduled threads that happened every week.

  • An album of the week thread, where the top post includes a link to the album on YouTube, Spotify, Grooveshark, iTunes, etc., plus the Wiki page for it if there is one.

  • A recommendations thread along the lines of "If I like X, Y and Z, what else will I like?"

  • A what-have-you-been-listening-to thread where you have to actually describe a few albums beyond just posting the cover art and "it rules."

Maybe one Mondays, one Wednesdays and one Fridays.

I don't mind taking charge on this if there's any interest.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Hello!
One thing that came to my mind - a single thread for each somewhat active band here as proposed by ted in his pilgrims-thread would be nice.

... although I assume that the face-to-face interaction at least for the Austrian Surf Music scene would not dramatically benefit from that Very Happy

From the perspective of keeping everything tidy this makes sense. However: Having specific threads for single aspects of your activity as a band makes it a little easier for people to find information through the search engine. And it probably attracts more attention when you have a new thread with a specific title than just a bump on a general thread, that is running for several years.

Or am I wrong here?

hi simon!
dependes on the discipline of the individual - if you start discussing the waer on your guitar's machinehead in your band thread, you are probably not doing any good to yourself ....
