I sometimes wonder if Marr took a leaf from Altered Images. Happy Birthday (1981) was the first time i'd noticed how good chime guitar sounded in mainsteam pop.

Marr is a great guitar player. I forgot about Altered Images. I'm a huge Smith's fan as well as The The.

Either you surf, or you fight.

Someone mentioned XTC, I found this entire concert from Rockpalast in Germany. They had stopped performing fairly early on and I never got to see them. I would like to have heard Marr in a band like this, although I can't imagine he could top Dave Gregory.

XTC were a great band, they going up until 2005 but intermittent as i remember. I had Statue of Liberty on 45 the week it came out.

I concur about Altered Images. XTC was also excellent in this respect.

Xtc...now there's a band worthy of a thread...
Honestly, I was a heavy metal kid during the Smiths era, and Johnny Marr and 'The Edge' were the only two guitarists in that scene that I secretly thought were cool. U2 had a few decent songs and the Smiths less so, but Marr was obviously inspired and creative.

Johnny Marr on the Smiths, Morrissey and putting politics back in pop

I didn't even know that he had a new solo record out. Man, it is great to finally hear that signature guitar tone again.

The February issue of Mojo magazine has a lengthy and very interesting cover story on Johnny Marr. It also has an included CD of his music (which I haven't checked out yet). His first fully solo CD is now coming out, and it' s supposed to be highly influenced by late '70s/early '80s post-punk. He sings on it, and is supposed to have worked a LOT on his singing lately. My wife has the Healers album, and it's pretty good, I like it.

I heard his single "The Messenger" a couple of months back, and was not immediately grabbed, but I think it was mainly me getting over the initial surprise of hearing him sing (I admit I have not followed his career much after The Smiths, and didn't even know he sang in The Healers). I suspect this is the type of sound that will grow on me after a few more listens, especially seeing how he doesn't really care anymore if he happens to sound like he used to at 18; not a bad thing at all.

A comment in the article about the title track from his new solo CD "The Messenger": "The Dick-Dale-meets-The-Edge solo from 2:21 is worth the price of admission alone."

Speaking of his singing, he doesn't have one of "those voices", but he sings quite well. There are recent videos of him doing Smiths songs and he delivers them very very well. He understands what they mean, and isn't just singing them to make the bucks. You guys know what I'm talking about? Too often you see people who didn't write the lyrics/melody for their old band singing the songs and they just don't understand them.

Like the actress that smiles as she "begs for mercy"?

IMO.

It's a pretty damn good song, if you ask me. And his singing is MUCH improved.

Which is funny because three of the guitarist that are amongst the most deserving to never get a "this guy sounds like 'x guitarist' meet 'n guitarist" are Johnny Marr, The Edge, and Dick Dale. All true originals.

Interesting interview with Johnny Marr.

Sounds like it's a backwards recorded solo to me?
