I still say Pipeline. No surf beat? I don't think anybody has ever even mentioned that. I've never even thought about it. The Ventures' WDR has a surf beat. I see this as kind of arbitrary.

Not enough reverb? Hmph. It was recorded using Fender units (or a unit?), and it's obvious. Is it the drippiest tune ever? No. It's certainly not lacking IMO.

Gotta be famous - yeah, check that box. How many "surf" songs have made it into the top 10?

Related to surfing? This is also arbitrary, since all this stuff is instrumental and what it's "about" (outside of your own imaginings) is derivable only from the title. It's named after a famous reef break in Hawaii, which is about as much about surfing as any "surf" song, but then the song was originally called ".44 Magnum" IIRC. To me, a rose by any other name...

By a classic band/artist? CHECK!

For all this, I also have no problem at all with Wipeout as a suggestion for all the same reasons, though it's not my preference. I believe it charted higher and MIGHT be more recognizable to a man on the street.

If you are more concerned with the views and opinions of the initiated (like all of us nerds having this discussion), then the list of possibilities broadens a bit with Mr. Moto coming out as the #1 contender in my mind.

So, yeah; Pipeline.

It can't be a vocal, even though vocals are allowed. So Kuk is out right there.

How about Exotic (Sentinals version) or Everybody Up (Fender IV)? Movin'? Tranquilizer/High Tide? None of these is specifically recognizable, but nobody would not recognize what they are.

Written by a surf band in any strict sense would let out most surf music and most classic surf. First performed by a surf band might let in a few more candidates, but not many.

At the risk of offering another simple and cartoonish option, how about Stoked'? Big Grin

It doesn't matter if nobody likes the anthem. How many people look forward to singing or even hearing any of the national anthems? How about your school songs?

I vote for Red Sunrise by the Space Cossacks.

Written by a surf band in any strict sense would let out most surf music and most classic surf. First performed by a surf band might let in a few more candidates, but not many.

That was sort of mischievous on my behalf as I knew the result.

I created a poll, check it out and vote.

I figured. Your sense of humor precedes you.

Incidentally, if a poll is set up, with Wipeout on it, or Bombora, which one would we be voting on? I'm tempted to create one with those and Movin' and Batman and Exotic all on it just for fun. Oh, and Spudnik, Surf Rider, High Tide, Tranquilizer, Malibu Run, and Malaguena.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I don't recognize the last one you mentioned. Please, call me Nobody.

Yeah, I wonder why not. To me, an anthem has to include all that is characteristic of surf music, has to have all the elements, arbitrary or otherwise.

Related to surfing?

Welll, however you want it to be of course. Name/atmosphere/whatever reference. Sure it's Instro, so no direct association and it's all in our minds, but still, Squad Car is about hotrods, Baja is about a beach... more or less. I take the composer's original intention here, it's as good as any.

Indeed, Mr. Moto is a great contender. My favorite of the bunch (in the poll) actually.

But like wise people said before, an ANTHEM doesn't necessarily has to be favorite, or best. It has to be representative, and popular. Even if we're pretty sick of it already. That's politics for ya... Whatever

Jake, I'll see your Red Sunrise (if only it was popular...), and raise you one Bells of St. Kahuna. Cool

Very interesting reply's, a lot of what I thought and what they were listing as most Tiki folk I know are also Surf music fans.

I pretty much have to agree that Pipeline fits the bill.

"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck

High Tide/Tranquilizer was discussed somewhat extensively on SG101 a while back, and the discussion by people who knew it from the inside out impressed the hell out of me, which is why I think of it. Otherwise pretty much below my radar, too. Undoing my double negatives, I was trying to say that anybody hearing those songs would recognize them instantly as surf music, whether or not they could specifically recognize the songs.

Pipeline is probably the best bet if you want something most surf fans like and can listen to on a regular basis, though if you want the man in the street to be able to come up with the name, it'll have to be Wipeout. I think a lot of people recognize Pipeline and Misirlou and Baja, too, but they don't know the name of anything but Wipeout. I've noticed people seeing Misirlou spelled out seem to think it has something to do with miso: mee-so-loo, the secret Egyptian spice that makes miso taste like that.

23 votes, Pipeline is in the lead. Are there really only 23 people on this forum?

I will have to say "Pipeline" is one of the coolest things ever done (in any genre) & I Vote for it cos' it's Great Music! I will say that the 1st time I heard "WDR 64'" by the Ventures it stopped me cold (I was 13). I kept thinking " What IS THIS ? I HAVE to learn how to do whatever that is/was !" Well I did, and there are "so many good ones", but "Pipeline" is at the top !! (So is the Chantays "Pipeline" LP, for that matter !).

28 votes now, Pipeline is still leading....like to see more votes on this...

My vote's for Pipeline as well. If there had to be one surf anthem that defines surf past and present and into the future, Pipeline is overall the best candidate as long as notoriety is important. Miserlou has probably eclipsed Pipeline and even Wipeout as the sound people think of nowadays when you tell them about surf music, but I doubt anyone could name the song if pressed on it. Pipeline has the classic surf melody which so many later bands attempted to emulate and still stands as a standard by which all surf songs are measured. Dick Dale is entirely a different animal in my opinion and I think a surf anthem should be more typical of the genre. Wipeout goes to the other extreme is a bit cheesy and commercial and it's probably the most well known surf song by name.
