Poll? Please select the anthem of your choice ...

Yeah, I agree we need a poll. Based on several replies, it appears some people aren't reading and/or understanding the question, which I believe goes something like so:

"If 'Quiet Village' is the anthem of exotica music, what do YOU consider to be the anthem of surf music?"

That indicates to me that it would be the most popular, most recognized, most representative of the genre. Several tunes being thrown out here are not even close, IMO.

It pains me to write this, but pre Pulp Fiction: Pipeline or Wipeout, Post Pulp Fiction: Miserlou.

Agreed.

I will have no complaints at all if "Journey to the Stars" eclipses any of those.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

For me it would be Squad Car, but both songs are still far too obscure to the casual music listener.

and Neither of which are actually about the Ocean or surfing.
even Mr. Moto and Misirlou are't really surf songs.
i.e.
They were not written to be about or in regards to surfing.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I'd say Pipeline. Misirlou would definitely be no. 2 though!!
I'll tell ya one thing, when in the context of being involved in a 'surf jam' , I will always opt out if it's 'Misirlou'-because EEVVERYBODY plays it differently!!! There's no confusion when playing 'Pipeline', hence its advantage as a 'surf anthem'.

Not sure how that applies to this discussion. If the song has to be about "surfing," then how bout we throw in "Surfin' USA"? "Surfin' Safari"? "My Beach"? ;)

We need a poll.

Perhaps the "criteria" might be helpful as well.

By those standards, the anthem for the exotica crowd is clearly "We Love Tikis."

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

"Shouldn't something like a surf anthem be a tune with historical significance to the genre of surf music, played by a band of historical significance within the surf music community, that represents the essential characteritics of surf music?"

That would be "Pipeline" by The Chantays

Would this mean I would have to stand up and salute the nearest surfboard if I heard somebody playing Pipeline?

Also, if I hear anyone describe Pipeline as "anthemic" I may barf. "Anthemic" usually seems to mean "good in a way that only a taste- and adjective-impoverished young twit of a reviewer can detect." As in, "The song was anthemic, but I took an antacid and it stopped."

"Surfer Joe"!

I'll try to sum up some criteria, IMHO:

  1. It's gotta have the Surf Beat, or close. Most of the songs suggested have it (Pipeline doesn't).
  2. Gotta have lot's of drippy reverb in the original version. (again, Pipeline... not so much)
  3. Gotta be famous/recognizable.
  4. Related to surfing, somehow.
  5. By a classic band/artist.

Wipeout's got it all, although I too am not crazy about it. Too primitive and cheesy, almost cartoonish.

I think Miserlou fits the bill, it's a natural choice (sic.)
True, it's an old Middle eastern traditional, but that's part of what surf music's all about- absorbing different cultures etc. and bringing it all to the sun and fun. And Dick Dale- everything he does, he (in his own words) relates to surf, the energy of the ocean, blah blah...
Also, he's the (self appointed?) king, isn't he?
Also, everybody covers it. (yeah, you too Wink )

(Kuk- great choice! but it's just not that popular...)
Anyway, all this doesn't mean much really, but it's a fun game.

I told a friend we wre having this thread discussion and he said "well what would be the anthem for Rock? or Pop?" and I did have to think about that too. Seems like surf as a genre has a lot more rules in a way.

Jeremy

How about written by a surf band?
