Miserlou, Hava Nagila, Night Rider, The Wedge, The Victor, Banzai Washout, Taco Wagon, Shake and Stomp, Let's Go Trippin', Esperanza, Mexico, Riders in the Sky, Nitro...need I say more?
No. Those songs are so damn good it's ridiculous.
I thought it should be hard to like surf and not like Dick Dale. His old stuff is just surf in the purest sense, and he's basically THE biggest reason surf gained popularity. Sure the Belairs wrote the first surf song, but DD pretty much raised and nurtured the entire genre, and turned it into a real phenomenon. There's a reason everyone was following his lead, and people still try to emulate him.

Anybody doing any fast (double, tremolo, whatever you want to call it) picking is doin Dicks thing.
Come on now, you can't be serious.....or do you really believe that statement? I'm not trying to start anything, but that claim is simply absurd.
JGibson, I believe surfneptune is talking about surf picking, aka double picking, aka tremolo picking, aka "that ethnic sounding alternating picking on a single string thing". See Miserlou. No one was doing that in rock-n-roll before DD came along. We aren't talking about just plain fast picking like the cats you mention.

Brian - I know full well what technique was being referred to. Dick was certainly not the first to tremolo pick a melody along a single string. That is a common musical technique that has been around for centuries.
Although your statement that DD was the first Rock-n-Roller to do it may be true, that's not what surfneptune said. His words:
"Anybody doing any fast (double, tremolo, whatever you want to call it) picking is doin Dicks thing."
Maybe when surfneptune sees this, he'll chime in. It seems to me that he's the most qualified to clarify his meaning.

I'm sorry, I thought it was obvious that Tom was talking about surf...anyone doing the fast double picking thing in a surf context (after all, that's what we are all here talking about), is doing Dick's thing. He brought that to the table and made it a surf idiom.

I have to say that I find it a little odd (and more than a little rude) that a newbie with "IronMaiden" as a username would come on SG101 and slam DD. Dick's not everyone's cup of tea, but he has certainly earned his stripes.
This is like a Mustang owner getting on a Camaro forum and start slamming the Z-28.
Perhaps IronMaiden should "run to the hills". Oh, I guess he did since he hasn't responded since his initial post.
I just don't like flamers. Please forgive me.

I think the technical term here is "troll", not flamer...A troll is someone who joins a group just to stir things up and then watches with glee the ensuing mayhem. However, I'm giving Iron Maiden the benefit of the doubt on this one. At least the discussion that followed has been good and civilized so far. It is interesting that most DD threads are fairly controversial. People have strong opinions on the man, it would seem.

I wish I knew more about Dick's cancer.
Jake,
Try to pick up Stephen MacParlands biography of Dick Dale. The details of Dick's cancer are discussed. Also, years ago Ivan posted an article he found about Dick's various struglles over the years (cancer, music, money, wives...) and his ability to bounce back. Maybe Ivan still has it?
Good to hear about your remission.

That article was in Goldmine (or Discoveries? I think Goldmine) magazine, and it was basically the condensed version of McParland's book (though still quite lengthy).

It seems like your the one being rude. I just asked a question, if you read my post youd see I didnt slam anybody. Too bad I dont like Dick Dale, oh well. Guess what? I dont like Miles Davis but I love jazz-go figure.
I dont like music snobs like you.
Its very Un-Dick Dale of you to be offended because I said what I believe.

...I think you should give Dick's 1980s LP "The Tiger's Loose" a spin...the version of "The Wedge" on that album is awesome...
Also, many of the tracks on "Surfer's Choice" are stunning in their brilliance...
...and be sure to catch DD live sometime, just so you know what He's really all about...
best wishes,

Posted: Sat Nov 04, 2006 5:04 am Post subject: (1) Am I the only one that doesnt like Dick Dale?
First off let me say this is a great forum I stumbled upon!
I know DD is a God when it comes to surf music and I understand and appreciate everything he's done for surf(or music in general), and he is the ultimate bad ass and all that; but I just don't dig his music. For one he is really sloppy, his tone is horrible, and his songs all sound the same.
(2) Am I missing something? (3) Is there a live album that captures a better DD than what Ive heard?
Well IronMaiden let me be among the first to welcome you to the forums, and I'll see if I can put a answer to your questions, note I highlighted them in your quote above.
1. No, some do and some don't. It's that simple.
2. Yes your are in fact missing something. I'll elaborate... DD is a surf guitar player. He isn't some pop artist that plays occasional surf guitar. Surf Guitar is what he plays. He is a god of his music only. But a god of his music he is!
We have many gods of surf music on this very forum as members. Stick around if you like surf music and you'll find out who they are. They are some very nice folks.
3. I don't know what you have heard, but if you put up some examples I'm sure you will have better answers and responses to your questions and statements.
I hope I have given you some answers you can understand and respect. This is a Surf Guitar Music forum. We like surf music, and it is mostly instro, but some like vocals also. However, tremlo picking is a huge part of surf music, and Dick Dale <u>_IS_</u> the guitar player that made it so.
There are even some here that might like Ironmaiden. I'd bet not many, but some.
Cheers
Joel

Besides, isn't Dick the "Father of Heavy Metal...?"

I suppose Jimmy Bryant doesn't count...or Django Reinhart...or Eddie Lang...or Carl Kress and Dick McDonough....DD didn't invent "fast" picking...there were MANY players before him employing rapid alternate picking on the guitar....and doing it much cleaner than he'll ever hope to do....not to mention actually improvising strong melodic ideas over complex changes...IMO the melodic/harmonic content of DD's material is sorely lacking (but he definitely makes up for it with energy).
Just to be clear - I love DD....but it's definitely not "His" thing. Nothing he has ever played has even come close to pushing the limits of existing guitar technique...TONE? For sure! But not technique.

We are talking about surf music.
Yes when I said anybody... it should have said "in the surf genre" after it.
I am no expert on Surf history. I just know when they ask "is the music like the Beach Boys?" I say "no, more like Dick Dale" and they go "Hunh?" and I ask "did you see pulp fiction?" and they go "ohhhhh yeah Dick Dale!"
Don't you think that kind of picking is the central feature of dicks style?

Uh, this isn't slamming?

There is nothing wrong with expressing an opinion! There are a lot of surf artists that I and many other folks on here like listening to a lot more than DD - some of those artists are on this board. There are also some DD haters on here. But understand that sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it that can strike a nerve. No offense was intended, but I don't sugar coat what I say, either. This is not a forum for thin-skinned guys and gals. But we all seem to get along nicely even when we disagree.
Oh, and I also like the Maiden - a lot. I have 'The Number of the Beast' on vinyl and CD. One of the great metal albums of all time, although early Uriah Heep is my favorite of that genre.
In closing, just for fun I think I'll go to a NASCAR forum as a newbie and start a thread entitled "I don't like Richard Petty" and see what happens.
