I have never heard of Best Coast! Are they worth a listen?

I fully agree that it isn't necessary to put lables on music genres to be able to enjoy the music but it helps a lot when discussing music on a forum like this regarding bands, songs, styles, record covers, guitar sounds etc. Another natural area of doing this is when arranging your record collection and of course it's also relevant for a record shop to file music under genre labels.

Anyway, the Beach Boys definitely were a "surf band" and played "surf music" on their first few albums while Pet Sounds isn't more "surf music" than Sergeant Pepper.

I'm most likely the biggest purist and narrow minded trad nazi that have ever graced this planet and I say that surf music can be both vocal and instrumental as they are both "surf music". Here's a good example of the two styles gracing the same 45...

They're Ok. I put them in the 'I don't always switch the channel' when they come on my Sirus alt-crap station.

This does seem like a tired thread but it is the very first thing I have to tell people when I say I play surf music. I think a better way of saying it is 'I play insto-surf, not Beach Boys'. Sometimes I'll say they suck just to put more distance between me and the BB's. I know they don't suck. I am just delineating my technique of differentiation. These are low-information listeners I'm talking to. Most are stuck in Classic Rock Hell and wouldn't seek out new music if you downloaded it onto a device that would inject it directly into their frontal lobes. Either that or country.

I live in the low end of no-where. There's no surf. There's no scene. I do what I have to just like the Beach Boys did. The parallels between me and Brian Wilson are many. Cept for that part for him being a one-eared genius guy. But I am hard of hearing. So I got that going for me, which is nice
