Ah, who cares about labels... after seeing this graph I would file them under: ALL THAT'S COOL UNDER THE SUN MUSIC!

Good call!

Is it just me? "The Warmth of the Sun" is a freakin' amazine song.

Makes me wish I had a girlfriend. Sort-of. Without the drama.

Love "Warmth of the Sun"! That was written the day after Kennedy was assassinated as a tribute to him of sorts. No matter what.. you'll always have the warmth of the sun.

I was just thinking about that song today. I'm listening to it as I type. Brian Wilson is a fantastic composer, truly amazing. He took Rock 'n' Roll to a new level harmonically and Warmth of the Sun is one of the best examples of his work.

OK, listening wasn't enough, I had to cop' the changes.

Holy Mackerel!!! I've never seen changes like these. I guess he must've gotten some great ideas when he was coppin' all those old four Freshmen tunes.

I was messed up on a couple of chords. I think I have it right now.

Indeed, Synchro. Brian was pushing the envelope musically. McCartney picked up on that and you know the rest.

He definitely knew his stuff.
A feller could study his music for years and never run out of new twists and turns to discover.

In my mind instrumental Surf Music was the music you'd hear at the beaches of So Cal but the Beach Boys were the artists that told us about So Cal in the first place.

YES.

Rock

BTW,

Off Topic I don't care if the Ventures aren't "surf." They sound surf to me.

Surfer Girl also has a weird modulation. (Only vocally?) I think Brian wrote melodically and didn't care about the formula of the day.
True genius.

Indeed, Jeff! Love 'em or hate 'em, Brian lived up to his label of genius. One of the most respected composer/performers of all time.

I'm actually okay with this... The Ventures had as much to do with me getting into surf as Dick Dale. ONE OF THE BEST SURF BANDS EVER. Cool

The Ventures were a huge part of the sonic landscape in the '60s. The Beatles changed things, there's no question about that, but other artists didn't all slink away (or start apeing the Beatles). The Ventures brought the clean guitar sound to a fairly wide audience for years after the first wave of Surf had ended. Maybe this music wasn't true Surf but it kept at least a vestige of the Surf sound alive. I love the Ventures music and always will. They, along with Chet Atkins were the first artists my father and I agreed upon.

I'm with you Morphball. I grew up on the East Coast and didn't hear Dick Dale. I learned Surf from The Ventures, Surfaris, Chantays, and Astronauts.

Huge Beach Boys fan here. "God Only Knows"--justifiably called a masterpiece...I love Carl's and Brian's voices on the ballads. Their voices had a haunting quality, especially in the upper registers. Really something special to me. Those are always my favorite BB songs. I guess Brian was like 23 when he wrote the Pet Sounds album. Unreal. I remember Carol Kaye (bassist on many sessions) saying what a total pro he was in the studio and a pleasure to work for--always knew what he wanted.

You're thinking of the Vanduras.

I'm pretty sure the Ventures weren't a surf band. My logic is that they would have to have gone to high school in the coastal areas of LA or OC to be a surf band. They didn't, so they must be a hodad band.

Exactly, like Hawthorne, CA. Maybe Brian could set up Hodad Guitar 101?
