You know I really don't think there is that much difference in the
format, nor do I think people are going to say "eeeewww, an email
list, that's been around since the 1980's, I want a web forum". I
think most people prefer the email list since the messages come to them.
I've also got the group set up so that non-members can browse the
messages at the Yahoo web interface
().
There already is a web-based forum for surf music, it's that
bombora.net thing...
Like I said, I would entertain the idea of switching the group to a
forum. But from the poll, most members prefer the Yahoo Group. And
seeing how there already is the Bombora forum, I don't see a need to
switch right now. I'll consider it in the future though.

Well said!

Yes, but if that's the method people find most covenient to access the
information, then that, in itself, benefits surf music.

I see, Klas.
I didn't realize that someone had to personally put up the webspace for the
forum format. I think you're being awfully insistent with other people's
webspace if you don't intend to do it yourself. Brian is a very nice guy and I
can see him doing it but as long as the Yahoo group is free, I can't see pushing
him or anyone to cough up the space and time to set up a forum.
It is an an obvious mis-statement to call the Yahoo list format "crap". A "crap"
format would not allow you and I to communicate with such ease and it wouldn't
be growing in membership so rapidly.

What are you talking about? I have neither the webspace or the
knowledge to set up a web forum but Brian was willing to give it a
try if enough people supported the idea. As for personal preferences,
I do think the Yahoo list format is crap but the main reason I wanted
to see a web forum is because I believe it would attract more people
and attention to the scene.

More than 10 years ago, I couldn't picture meeting so many people from
all over the world so quickly. I can write to these individuals fairly
quickly as well. They receive my messages within minutes. Furthermore,
it's cheaper than a phone or even parcel post (in my case because I use
dial-up). I say that yahoo groups have been pretty darn good!

I didn't say you were awfully insistant with "Brian's" web space. I said you
were awfully insistant with "other peoples" webspace. You have brought up the
desire for a forum format countless times knowing it would require someone,
anyone, to dedicate webspace.
I still think you can do it yourself and it would have at least some success.
Yes, you have a learning curve and some webspace to purchase but your enthusiasm
for the idea should be very motivating. Don't let my lack of enthusiasm for the
idea stop you.

What other people's webspace? The 4-5 "countless" times over the last
year when I've brought up a desire for a web forum, have all been
about trying to get people interested in joining the Bombora Surf
Music Forum, which was already on the net long before I first found
it.
Now, get off my back!

Hey guys I am growing a bit tired of this subject. Yes Klas has
repeatedly praised the merits of the Bombora web forum, and that's
okay, as the more venues for the discussion of surf music, the
better. However there is a line in there somewhere. Obviously it
would be bad form if I went on to the Bombora forum and encouraged
everyone to join this list here. But Klas isn't the owner of the
Bombora forum, just a surf fan (and musician) who wants to spread
the word. Fine, nothing wrong with that, as long as he doesn't do it
every day.
So to summarize:
Klas asked me to consider switching SG101 to a web forum.
Intrigued, I tried out some software and found it interesting.
I created a poll to ask what the members wanted to do.
The turnout was low, as to be expected, but a clear majority wanted
to stick with Yahoo Groups, at least for now.
I'm satisified with that, but will consider revisiting the idea in
the future (say in a year or so).
Klas & Marty you guys obviously have strongly held opinions on web
forums vs Yahoo Groups; can you take your debate to private email?
Thank you,
BN
Sorry Klas. You're right. You did try to get us to join the existing Bombora
list. In fact I think some folks did.

What other people's webspace? The 4-5 "countless" times over the last
year when I've brought up a desire for a web forum, have all been
about trying to get people interested in joining the Bombora Surf
Music Forum, which was already on the net long before I first found
it.
Now, get off my back!

Don't let my lack of enthusiasm for the idea stop you.
