I don't see it so grey, Jeff. Where rock and roll fans are concerned,
we all associate "Miserlou" with Dick Dale. Just as in the pop vocal we
associate "New York, New York" with Frank Sinatra or "Moon River" with
Andy Williams, "Thanks for the Memories" with Bob Hope. None of those
guys wrote the song yet those songs belong to them.

Misirlou is so covered. It appears on about half of every first wave
album and it is constantly covered today. I think the amount it is
covered really has an effectt.

Dude, that strikes me as really odd. Why would The
Ventures nix songs on your setlist that they didn't
have any intention of playing?

That is a cool story, Rick...but let me get this straight: they
crossed songs of YOUR set list, but they themselves did not even play
them? Did they think your songs were too similiar to theirs or
something?
Thanks,
BN
When they crossed the songs out on our setlist, we assumed it was
because they were going to play them. It wasn't until they were done
that we realized they didn't play any of the songs they said we
couldn't play. I don't remember all the songs that were on that list,
but I do remember Memphis was the only one I thought they might play.
I am positive Walk Don't Run, Pipline, Wipeout, Apache, were NOT on
our setlist.
I'm guessing they wanted to leave everything open in case they were to
change things up in their set.
It didn't feel like they were bullying us around, they were very
friendly with us in the dressing rooms, and the list wasn't too big of
a deal to us. The 'buts had a lot of material in the repertoire.

I remember that Halibuts gig at the Palamino where you opened for the
Ventures. You guys had on shark skin suits and I recall you doing a
Monkees tune as an instro. I think it was "Im' a Believer". Great
stuff!

I think that goes further to prove the point, Jacob. There are indeed many
covers of Miserlou, yet we still consider it a Dick Dale tune.

I truly enjoy the guy's music. I think a lot of people get the

still awesome in 1994 as the opening theme to Pulp Fiction, it's hard
to think of title theme as effective before or since. Sure Dick's ego

is a real d*ck. We can point to the technically better musicians with
nicer attitudes that have followed, but these guys, DD, LR and CB are
the originals and belong on Mt. Rockmore.

Hey Kristena,
You are absolutely right that arrogance doesn't have to be a byproduct of talent
and Slacktone are the shining example. I like to see both of Dick and Slacktone
equally. Arrogance ain't such a bad thing. The Dick Dale show wouldn't be nearly
as fun without that huge ego that pushes him to the front of the stage and gets
the crowd to chear him on. And all that other goofy stuff he does, such as
playing a mean trumpet and bashin' away at the drums is fun as well. I also
like his vocals. You and I both saw a very over-the-top Dick Dale in Glendale
last summer and I recall us both giving him glowing reviews on one of these
lists. He sells surf to the general public like know one else I've seen.

Yeah, let's just say it would've been good to see Dick perform that 40
years ago, but I rather see Slacktone perform it today. Dave, Dusty,
and Sam prove that arrogance doesn't have to be a byproduct of talent.

-Bruce,
Chill out alittle but please.
You weren't there.
I said in my original Post that Dave said they weren't going to
play it. But (WE) were all yelling for it. Dusty shrugged his
shoulders and said what the hell, lets give it to them.
Dick wasn't the headliner, he was only going to be playing with
Jimmy, Bus since Sam and Ron were there, and Jimmy can play drums
there were some full band songs. But about a half hour of it was
just the Dick and Jimmy show(Boreing). The Chantays and the Surfaris
were after Dick.
And Paul and Gil (The Duo Tones) Did Pipeline, and the Chantays
were there. I'm sure Paul wasn't being disrespectful of the Chantays.
As a Matter of fact, the only one who was rude the whole day was Dick.
The way he went on about nover being able to find/have a good drummer,
who could listen/take directions/play on the 1's. That was a major
slap inthe face of Dusty, and I believe he just said it to be an ass,
and is still mad at him for leaving.
I understand what you are saying, and I totally 100% respect Dick fo
rall his contributions to surf. But today the guy is 100% asshole
and a bitter and misserable old geezer.
Ron and Dusty didn't leave for no reason, they couldn't put up with
him anymore.
I could go on and on, but I've had personal e-mail exchanges with
Dick, and he's not pleasant or respectful to anyone in the surf
comunity.

If I heard Dick Dale playing one of our songs, yes, I'd be totally
flattered and stoked! But for ME to presume to perform Dick's #1

He said the thing about the drummer in Dusty's presence. What an
asshole. That isn't cool at all.

Yeah,
ON stage infront of Everybody, and Dusty was there.
We(THE HARD CORE SURF CROWD)were awe struck, our jaws just hangin'
down. I couldn't believe that he'd say that about Dusty. But Then I
realised 2 things. Dusty had just left the band, And It is DICK
we are talking about here.

I have to admit. Dick Dale pissed me off the other day at Newport Beach. There
was alot of trash talkin' he could of skipped that day. Wasn't necessary.
I saw the members of the Surfari's and Chantays look at each other in disbelief.
Like Jeff said. You had to be there.
Besides all the drama, I can only hope, the most important, we all helped Jim
Pash.

Hey Jeff -
I know where you're coming from, and believe me, I know how big a Dick Dale can
be.
I also consider Dave W to be one of the most awesome surf/rock guitarists on the
scene today, and also deserving of respect and admiration!
Maybe my sense of artistic etiquette is inordinately well-defined, but my
feeling was that the Big Dick has already pissed around the perimeter of
"Misirlou" for enough years and on enough stages that it should be considered
his signature song.
A--hole or not, in his "Golden Years" (lol!) Dick Dale is still owed a lot by
all of us in the Surf Music community. I don't wanna ruffle your feathers, but
that's how I feel.
Best Regards Big Tiki Dude!

You speak about artistic integrity and etiquette yet you don't seem to
condemn Dick announcing he can't find a good drummer any where in
front of a drummer he let go, presumably to a disagreement. And You
need to go apeshit on Paul Johnson and Gil(can anybody fill me in on
who he is) of the Duo-tones for doing Pipeline on the same bill as the
Chantays.

This part of the argument based on hearsay and rumor.
There are lots of reasons for leaving employment-
better money, better personal situation, more
opportunity for advancement in the company. Dusty,
unlike almost everybody on this list, is a
professional musician, and gigs = food. Maybe Dusty
left for a non-personal issue, and Dick is a little
pissed that he left. Until you hear it from Dusty's
mouth, I don't think it's right to presume you have
any idea what happened between the two of them.
And, while I am picking on my friends here... Jeff,
you yelled for Miserlou from Slacktone, then you turn
and go to the back of the room to see what Dick's
reaction is. Did you really want to hear the song or
were you interested in antagonizing Dick?
With apologies to Jake and Jeff,
Ferenc

No apologies needed Ferenc. I was just going off of what I have heard
and what the reaction has been.

Isn't Gil Orr from The Chantays? That'd make the Duo-Tones playing "Pipeline" a
bit different than Slacktone doing "Misirlou."

You speak about artistic integrity and etiquette yet you don't seem to

need to go apeshit on Paul Johnson and Gil(can anybody fill me in on
who he is) of the Duo-tones for doing Pipeline on the same bill as the
Chantays.
