I'm currently listening to the audio book of Kid Congo Powers' memoir Some New Kind Of Kick. Great stories from the first wave of LA punk as well as his time with The Cramps and more.

I've been listening to this Branko Mataja album a lot this week. It's surf adjacent with beautiful ringing echos.

Great stuff from The Phantom Surfers and especially Johnny Bartlett playing the guitar behind his back...

To what I think are the best Dutch band active in 1979-1981, The Rousers and the Nits. Listening to this album:

Here's an example:

And here's the Nits from 1980, to what I was listening prior to the Rousers:

Hey Mike,
Does Sun Ra fall into the category known as "Free Jazz?" Thanks!

I've had this copy of "ANGELS AND DEMONS AT PLAY" since its release in 1974 and it still blows my mind.

Hey Patrick,

The answer I would give is sometimes. The band is mostly known for its collective improvisation, but they also have riffs and cues that they use when they see fit. Some things are free form, some are open ended grooves, and some of t is structured. The group also does play their own arrangements of a variety of standards mostly straight up.

The members are certainly talented and forward thinking players. If you have a chance to see the you should definitely go. I had a great time.

Yesterday I asked Alexa to play songs by Tony Bennett....kept it going today. We are seeing the end of an era and he may be the final note. Some of you will understand what I'm saying. Thankful he passed our way and left the greatest gift of all..a lifetime of music.

Happy Sunsets!

For the last two weeks al I've been obsessed with is the Surphonics cover of "Goldfinger".

You should check out Dave Wronski's treatment of it on Slacktone's "Warning: Reverb Instrumentals" - I always thought he should do John Barry's theme from "Out of Africa" too.
