Thee Cormans Halloween album in the house... In the car, I've had the Von Drats "Dratsylvania" playing for days. Love it. I had a brief chance to see DanO when he flew into Las Vegas this past Sunday. I haven't been back to Toronto since 2008. It's been nice to see my old friends this year! —"Turn the knob to 10 and break it off!" -Baja Marty |

daikaiju! was it for me again today. my 23 year old employee played it about three times and i'd already played it twice. a few weeks ago when i left hatteras island at the last minute with hurricane irene headed for us to trade cars with our son i only had one cd in the car.....the tomorrow men.......i think i listened to it for about 12 hours, six hours in each direction. (there's no decent radio stations to pick up in the swamp lands of eastern north carolina.) — |

Built to Spill... not surf, but awesome nonetheless. —I want less sustain. My notes are so tortured it seems only humane to let them die as quickly as possible. |

Jimi Hendriz "Winterland" 5CD Box set, and "Hendrix in the West". There are some tremendous guitarists out there, but Jimi was at an exalted level that (to me) no one has remotely approached. It's more than a technical thing, though he was technically mind=blowing (especially for the early time period, and given the gear limitations in the 60's). The spirit/vibe/soul in his playing was what really made it special for me. His material was top notch, as well. To now have these Winterland recordings available is huge for me. The band was really on a roll: absolutely at the top of their game, with inspired performances involving a lot of loose arrangements & jams, no pre-arranged setlists, guest performers sitting in, and some rare and/or unusual song choices. The high level of the performances and lack of filler, flubs & sub-par material is astounding. Most people associate Jimi with the freak-show, flamboyant side of his playing, but here, this is a serious man-on-a-mission artist, really buckling-down and delivering the goods during this run of shows. Jimi, the Experience, and their guests were at the top-of-their game here. I cannot recommend this Winterland box highly enough, and give it "6 stars on a scale of 5". "Hendrix in the West", also awesome, is expanded and improved upon. Being that it is pulled from a number of shows over a time period of a few years, it is not as cohesive as the Winterland box. Still, I'd give it 5 out of 5 stars. —Bob Last edited: Sep 17, 2011 14:46:39 |

I just got the EP that Sleep Patterns by Memory House is on. Their first release. I'm a really big fan of the song. I really like her voice, and the track has a great pace to it. |

How's it compare to the Woodstock 2 CD set? I mean, when people say "mind-blowing" when describing ANYTHING, I don't think they've invented adjectives powerful enough to describe THAT performance. If that makes any sense whatsover. —Radio Free Bakersfield--60 Minutes of TWANG, CRUNCH, OOMPH. |

Whorehay, To my ears (and a general consensus among Hendrix fans, experts and critics), Woodstock was a relatively weak show for Henrdrix. He had a new "big" band (Jimi & Mitch being the holdovers. Billy Cox had just flown in from Nashville, and they added a rhythm guitarist and two percussionists. This was loose, sloppy band. Jimi was so unhappy about the band's performance at Woodstock that he disbanded the new group shortly after Woodstock. He came on to play about 6am, and for most of the show was not at the top of his game. There are exceptional moments by Jimi at Woodstock, but by his lofty standards they were few and far between during that show. In my opinion, the Winterland run in Oct '68, and the Band of Gypsies shows at the Fillmore East New Years '69-70 smoked the Woodstock show. I think that for many, Woodstock's legend escalated into something more than it really was . Most of the bands thought that their performances at Woodstock were crap. Some refused to grant release of their sets for the film and /or album. But in the minds of many (quite often people who were not there, or not alive at the time of the festival), the performances at Woodstock were the best ever done by the bands who performed there. Yes, I agree mind-blowing is overused, and maybe I was lazy in choosing words. Frankly, almost all of my posts are random thoughts off-the-top-of-my-head, and not deliberately chosen. I would argue that "mindblowing: was a word that is certainly time appropriate for describing Jimi in '68. My 2 cents... Thanks for chiming-in! Bob —Bob |

Ha! Ha! You're absolutely right, Carol. And about 3 million more people than actually attended the festival, say that they were there. " If you remember the sixties, you weren't there!" Bob —Bob Last edited: Sep 19, 2011 08:29:05 |
