The Space Cossacks played with the Aqualads once

much of them. Lo and behold, they're now quite a band!
(I wonder how many current band members were in the
band in '97?)

The liner notes suggest they've been mostly the same band for most of the time, although it's worth noting, over the last several years Jeremy DeHart took over lead guitar for most work, which is not an insignificant change.

So, Jake, when was the last time you've listened to a recently released or new surf music album?

As are many other songs on this great CD! Just a quick word for people who may want more info about this new Aqualads CD: I'd describe it as falling squarely in the traditional surf camp. It's kinda like the Torquays-meet-the-Penetrators with a dash of the Eliminators thrown in. Having said that, I'd be hard pressed to name a '60s surf band that sounds like this, though I think everyone would agree these guys are very trad - it's more of a modern take on trad, a kind of an adult-trad (sorry to use this dirty word in the surf music circles!), highly competent and quite creative with impeccable production quality.

Besides the many very trad-ish songs (several ballads, several high energy blow-ups and a few songs in-between) and the Atlantics tribute, there's also a spy-ish song and a spaghetti-westernish song (in a very interesting time signature). A really nice variety of sounds.

Definitely worth a listen! You can check out some samples and/or purchase it here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/aqualads4

Not sure, but I do plan on picking up the Tomorrowmen's album as I really like those fellas. The last I got was either the new Surf Coasters or Frankie and the Poolboys. I got the Secret Samurai disc as well around that time. I think the Surf Coasters is more recent than those. Wait... new Bambi Molesters, is that more recent than the Surf Coasters? In the past year I've more or less stopped seeking out new music. I don't know why, just a phase. I bought a bunch of surf in 2008/2009, but kind of stopped after that. I try not to buy CDs as I don't listen to them, and I don't commute anymore so I don't listen to my iPod non-stop.

"Gold" or "Outside Break"? If the latter, that came out in '08 or '09. "Gold" is from '10.

"Gun Sho Gun"? That was also in '08.

Depends on which Surf Coasters CD you're referring to. "As the Dark Wave Swells" came out in early '10, so that's not too bad.

Though you've picked up what are IMO some of the best surf CDs of the past three years, I think you're still missing out on some great stuff from the past year or two. At the very least, i'd say these few: El Ray's "Chasing Ray", El Supernaut's "Viva!", Daikaiju's "Phase 2", the Secret Samurai's "Zanshin", and most recently the Aqualads' "Treasures". But one could add many more CDs to this list, and I'm sure others have their own favorites. Oh, BTW, no Los Twang! Marvels' "Jungle of Twang"??? For shame.... ;)

It was the Gold album. I have Outside Break as well. And it was Gun Sho Gun, but I got in the winter of '09/'10.

I don't like Los Twang! Marvels. I can't quantify it, but not for me.

El Ray, I am a fan of for sure. I'll need to look at their new releases. Same with the Secret Samurai, I forgot they had a new disc.

I want a new Langhorns disc. Same with Cosmonauti.

Damn,
I need to get that Aqualads CD now.

"Surf Dilemma" is in my top 10 surf faves. That album got played every other weekend at my place a coupla summers ago.

You are not listening to the right podcasts.

I don't listen to podcasts or any sort of radio(save for local station). I dislike listening to playlists compiled by other people. It isn't something I listen to, but can tolerate as background.

Jake,
Do you think that there could be stuff played on podcasts that you might not have known of, but would like a lot?

I must admit that I find it hard to keep up with every podcast I know of.
But When I do get around to listening to them.
I usually hear something cool, that I hadn't heard before.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Absolutely. There is no doubt, however... I wouldn't enjoy the experience at all. I have other ways of finding music(such as clicking links and sampling tracks). I've always been an album person, so if I sample and like(and think it would be good in an album) I tend to buy the album. I get some lemons, but I find some real gems, like Tsar Wars. That, in my opinion is the greatest surf record because it is by large, an album. The tracks have a story(literally in this case) and they fit together in a fashion that creates tension, plot, and emotional interest. There are other examples of this of course, but that album was my first love.

Jake, have you heard Los Twang! Marvels' "Jungle of Twang" album (2008)? I think that is an incredible album - as a whole! A remarkable degree of cohesiveness AND diversity between all the songs, and the opening track, "Sea of Glory", is simply one of the most astounding pieces of surf songwriting - nay, composing - ever. It's really one of my all-time favorite surf albums. I'm really surprised that you wouldn't like them. I'm kinda thinking that you probably haven't heard this album if you think you don't like them.

Is the local station you listen to a music station?

I've just heard live videos.

And Whorehay, it is a music station. Just classical music. I just listen to it when I drive any of our work vehicles.

Gotcha. Have you heard the one about the TV expert who doesn't watch TV?

Yes, actually. I read an article in the Atlantic about how AOL's TV "Experts" are given a short clip and 30 minutes to write articles about the show. I know that isn't what you mean!

But I do not claim to be a radio expert or even a music expert. I consume copious amounts of music and radio happens not to be a preferred format.

I've changed my mind on Los Twang! Marvels. I was reading an article on Pitchfork saying how good they were, so I agree now.

or... Ivan sent me some album tracks and I liked them and I've decided to pick the album up. Good job Ivan!

Jake,

I have no idea what pitchfork is.
But I find it weird that some of the SG101ers have been
going on and on for a few years now about the Los Twang Marvels,
and you haven't caught on. I will admit that I only a few months ago got the cds. But I heard them at a friends house over a year ago, and knew I wanted them.

I think it is/was your hate of the word Twang that kept you away from them. Sometimes you have to look/listen past a name, or look of a band, and just judge the band on the Music.
