captainsensible.....i was the only one there wearing a black dress with lime green spider webs and spiders on it. (finally a chance to wear it) i'm surprised you didn't see me. : )
Sorry I missed you. I was sporting all my K-Coast gear to give myself away. Oh well. Next time.

we got there two minutes before the show started. someone should write a song titled 'lost in dc'. god, what a mess that place is to drive around.
This is my daily life. And it is the reason I wish every day that I could move back to the beach.

I just listened to these guys for the first time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQkI5uFNEIU&feature=related . These guys are awesome! And like usual, by the time I listen to a new band, they're on their farewell tour.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I never even heard of them until six months ago. I now have three of their albums and have ordered a fourth. When I found out this was to be their farewell tour I was bummed!
Saw them friday night in Hoboken, and they were so awesome, I had to go see them again last night in Brooklyn. I got to speak to Tom and told him how sad I was that this is their last tour and thanked them profusely for coming around this way.
I'll be looking for whatever these four guys are going to do individually in the future.

I'm angry, because they came to Virginia a little while ago, and there's no way I could go to one now.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

the second night of my 4 day blitz took place at MAXWELL's in HOBOKEN N.J. on Friday October 24th
the club was SOLD OUT completely, the room was packed to the hilt; ran into DAVID + TERRY from MISSION TIKI/DRIVE INVASION who last minute decided to come to the show, and didn't have tix, but were walked in by Pedro Del Mar/Mr. Pete (Pete Curry)
here's a great shot of us:
I did not get a chance to speak with either band about their feelings about the Maxwell's show (see my next post on this thread, coming later) b/c I had to run out of there when the show ended at 1:25 am, {just in time for me to make the bus back to NYC at 1:30 am -- talk about good timing!}
LAIKA and the COSMONAUTS played a killer set, fast-paced, great mix of tunes
in fact, here is the set list, accurate but for the encore (which was only LOOK, NO HEAD):
I shot some video of LAIKA + THE COSMONAUTS, but had to wait until the next day for the band to discuss what I shot, and get their approval to post it to YouTube
for this show, one video was cleared, and it's a classic: it's a 3-song-run-together number: PSYKO/MISSION IMPOSSIBLE/EXPOSE
you can view the video here:

or

LOS STRAITJACKETS when viewed from under 1 foot away can be a powerful experience!!
here are 4 videos - count 'em!! -- 4 videos I shot:

and,

I hope people who didn't get to see this tour check out the videos to get an idea of how cool this all was
I will eventually package my assorted pix from the 4 shows I attended in a FLICKR file -- give me a few days
In the mean time, please enjoy the videos
with pleasure, and joy....

morning has broken, to quote Cat Stevens....
Laika and the Cosmonauts and Los Straitjackets performed together again on Saturday October 25 2008; this time, SOUTHPAW, Brooklyn, NY
also on the bill, opening, was the Dex Romweber Duo; I shot a video of their opening tune, and am awaiting a reply from Dex for the song title - when I get it, I will drop it into YouTube and add a post in this thread
in the meantime, http://www.myspace.com/dexterromweberduo
when I caught up with members of both Los StJax and Laika, they ALL complained about Maxwell's 'sound' from the previous evening -- i.e., maybe it was b/c of the overcrowding, maybe b/c their soundman 'sucked', as a couple of band members suggested....but the bands could NOT hear themselves on stage. Plenty of other complaints about the overall gig....but it was all soon forgotten after the SOUTHPAW show
here is some proof, via my videos I have posted:
LAIKA + THE COSMONAUTS:
N.Y. '79 (my personal favorite!! thxxx again for the shout-out!!))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__5QQDMgebg
or
http://tinyurl.com/5udmpu
FADEAWAY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oIMv8skKAU
or
http://tinyurl.com/5d9bwn
and, LOS STRAITJACKETS:
ISN'T LOVE GRAND
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzJzc_Hb4vc
or
http://tinyurl.com/66a9p5
FORTUNE COOKIE (new, unreleased song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhqw8dTwE5Q
or
http://tinyurl.com/6gjg7t
of the 4 new tunes introduced on this tour (so far), I dig FORTUNE COOKIE the most
and by the way, the new song that was being called SPEEDO is now going by the name, CAL SPEED
for those interested, here is a copy of the set list by LAIKA and the COSMONAUTS at SOUTHPAW:
got some great pix as well....and as stated in a prior post, as soon as I can find the time, I will create a FLICKR file of my 4 days with these 2 great bands
enjoy

I personally had no issues with the sound at MAXWELL's in Hoboken; I guess being in the audience v. being on stage (and getting the benefit of the PA) made a difference
Of course being at the foot of a mini-stage means I got the sound full, raw, and in my face....but I could make out the instruments (had trouble with the vocals, though.....hahahahaha just kidding!)
The sound in Philly at WORLD CAFE, in Brooklyn at SOUTHPAW, and Troy NY at REVOLUTION HALL were all fine, no issues there
My videos from Maxwell's (links posted earlier in this thread) do manage to capture the 2 bands' performance with fairly decent sound -- I suspect better than what the musicians were hearing....
