ah Bill,
that is a classic shot, but I miss the pics of you with the
tropical drinks, just because it wont be seen that often.

You need a band Garrett - perhaps a few songs with us soon? We could use the vocal help, and a 3rd guitar.

I dont' really know WHY the thread I was reading has been shunted over here? What's the point ?
Anyway, NOW that I'm here....Here's my take. It's well thought out, natchurally.
The Hawaiian shirt on stage says a couple of things, tacitly.
_It's the EASY thing to do. (too lazy to put thought into an outfit)
Like a fast paint job it covers a million sins.
Requires no thought and absolute minimum effort._
The interesting thing is....these attributes are reflected on the band.
I'm assuming we're all (pretty much) adults here. Aren't we?
I'm not afraid of straight talk.

in my last band we went for black trousers, cheap dress shirts and ties..the sax player never conformed, always track pants and a t-shirt, untill one night we had a gig at one of the "in" venues. We were well recieved. booked a couple more times the i had a breakdown and split the band up!! But it was fun picking on the young guy in the track pants while it lasted....

Because we don't need two threads discussing the same thing.

I think its fine to have your opinions about Hawaiian shirts in or not in surf bands, But lets keep it Cival. No need to get snooty about it saying that
its whats holding back surf. Thats just plain silly to say.
I think the 500 people at the HB Pier shows could give a rats a**
if the band is wearing a Hawaiin shirt or not. They are just there to enjoy the tunes.
I think surf being underground has to do with Promotion, or lack there of, and Radio stations not being willing to put it on mainstream stations.
Jeff(bigtikidude)
p.s. I stand corrected about Dave Arnson of the Insect Surfers not wearing Hawiian shirt at shows,
for each Acid Beach party he does, he wears a bright orange and pink
Psychedelic Hawaiian shirt. But that is the only time

as for me, hawaiian shirts just dont really look all that good in my opinion, but all the power to any surf band that wants to wear them. i must agree that it seems like it is kind of the first outfit idea along with bowling shirts, which i prefer the latter. i dont think a surf band is conformist if thats what they wanna wear, but thats just the look and feel they want to portray, because most likely the surf bands they listen to inspire the same feeling that they want people to see in them. if anything, most surf bands using the same or similar fender amp is more conformity than the costume issue. im not insulting anyone or fender, i love fender. in fact, i Wish i had a nice fender combo instead of the not-very-well-known british thing i have.
and that, my friends, is my opinion.

I Think the most interesting aspect to come out of this thread is the issue of conformity/authenticity.
As Stratofuzz said earlier on:
"'50 rock and roll has turned into nothing at all like it's once rebelious self'
...and I agree because you can't freeze something at a moment in time and expect it to keep any aspect of rebellion - because you are actively rejecting the whole concept of the medium developing. I used to play in a 50's Rock n' Roll band and the people that followed us were probably the least rebellious that you could ever meet.
The Catch 22 is that if Wah Wah and Chorus pedals had been availaible in Eddie Cochran's time then he would have used them and those sounds would have been part of the iconography of Rock N' Roll (this is definitely NOT an argument for the use of Chorus pedals in Surf Music BTW) It seems to me that Surf music is a broad church that loosely embraces everything between Santo and Johnny to The Cramps and I'm thankful that it does. It's great that some bands are keeping the original vibe alive and it's great that some bands are stretching it's boundaries. The unifying concept is the 'Twang' I guess....
In another thread on this forum I read a post from a guy saying that he wouldn't even give a listen to a band he saw playing Danelectro guitars and I just find that scary. Everyone loves the vibe of a vintage Fender and I have few myself, but although the image you choose to create is important, what really matters is the music and how it makes you feel. Whatever shirt you wear, whatever guitar you play.

well said Estreet!!
i'm starved of live surf music at the moment...so i couldn't give a rats arse what the next surf band i see is wearing, it's gotta be better than not seeing a surf band at all. But when I take to the stage hopefully later on this year, voices in my head are going to be saying: "which shirt? not the hawaii! go on try it with your guitars see what it looks like!! ... if only I had a Surf Guitar 101 bowling shirt!! shit, i can't find my grass skirt!!!"

My own basic rule of thumb over the years: look as good as ya can afford to, long as it doesn't inhibit ya. In other words, don't dress so nice that yer afraid to get yer clothes messy! As I tend to do a lot of sweating, rolling, spilling, and bleeding during a set, there's just no way in hell I can afford to wear anything too spiffy or irreplaceable without toning it down a bit, and frankly, I'd rather look like a slob than calm it down. Plus, being 6'2" and 250 lbs, yer average thrift store ain't gonna have a whole lotta threads that'll fit!
I learned a valuable lesson some years back when I played a gig wearing a very nice silk tie. You ever tried untying a knotted piece of soaking-wet silk at three in the morning after about 15 beers? I ended up sleeping with the damn tie still on, and finally managed to work it free about 5 pm the next day. Nightmare! Never again...

Whenever i see a band in street clothes it doesnt kill it for me but its certainly a downer. It feels so uncordinated, like 5 different musicians playing together, rather than a band.

it also depends on if the people in the band have the same taste is clothing. if you get people wearing similar streetwear onstage that also helps. ive found that friends usually tend to dress alike, so i think thats a big part of that, too.

Doesn't have to be clothes, you could all share some kind of accessory too.
