I know he isn't, but the bassist appears to be looking for the beat. I was guilty of that in my younger years.

OMG I have no idea where to begin.

This event went better than I ever imagined. All the praise heaped on Jeff should be increased two fold, along with all the people who helped him put this together. I hope this event is a springboard from which Jeff will become the surf impresario. And don't worry Jeff, we'll all be here to keep you humble Very Happy

So many highlights I can't begin to list them all so anything or anyone I leave out please forgive:

  • Playing on stage with Ferenc and Ivan - 3 years ago when I started playing again if you told me I'd be doing that I would rolled my eyes and said "yeah when pigs fly" . Well i just saw one pass overhead Rolling Eyes because it really happened. 2 of my heroes and me playing a beautiful song together - and 3 times!

  • Meeting Brian in person - such a nice, down to earth guy. If only he could find some kind of a wormhole to just zip him out here to the coast whenever he wants.

  • Watching, and then talking with Eddie Bertrand - the legend himself. And on stage with Paul Johnson, what a treat. Eddie is such a cool guy, killer guitarist, and we're so lucky to have him in the fold.

  • The Wall of Amps
Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked - 'nuff said

  • Playing Margaya with Ran, JP and Norman - It Rocked!!! All the pictures of that jam I've seen have me looking serious because it's so badass - no smiling allowed Evil

  • Watching the Madeira play 3 times - Ivan et.al. noticed my constantly beatific smile the entire time they played, I couldn't help it. Pure bliss. Ivan's solo in Rogue Wave Rock They set the bar for all us in-between trad-non-trad surf bands. I don't hesitate in stating that The Madeira are my favorite surf band playing today. I really hope they can continue playing together, which they told me they plan to.

  • Playing with Pollo and not majorly screwing up. I felt very comfortable playing with them and felt very welcome in the band. It forced me to stretch out my musical chops and think outside the tank ;) They're all talented, warm and funny guys and I had the time of my life with them this weekend. Thanks guys!

  • Meeting all the SG101'ers again and for the first time. I can't list them all but shout outs to Ryan, Steve-o-san and Bill of Secret Samurai; Ivan,Dane, Patrick (Fastest rt.hand in surf) and Todd of The Madeiras :); Hans (and Lisa) and Ran of the Sand Devils, Dave Wronski, Stormtiger Capn Springfield,Redd Tyde and Matt from Zombie Surf Camp; Billly, Ted and the gang from The Detonators; Eddie Katcher who loaned me his JM on Margaya - you rule, Karen and Outsides, HBKahuna....I"ll think of more and post them.

Keep the pictures coming and lets see some video soon

Wow, what a weekend! I tried to say Hello and meet as many people as I could, but I missed a few. Too much fun. Thanks Jeff!
A huge thanks to The Detonators for providing the backline for the night show. Thanks to all the people who stayed for the night show after total reverb overdose of the day long event.

You are most welcome my friend. By the way, you guys RIPPED!!!!

Great to have you all down in SoCal. Come back soon...We'll try to get up to NorCal soon as well.

Oh, and in case you are keeping track:

Man, what an event!
Huge thanks to Jeff, and everyone lese that made this possible. The performances were really amazing, besides seeing the first wave and current wave legends play (which is I got to several times in the past), it was a treat to see sg101'ers get to jam. Stormtiger you rocked. I also finaly got to see the Aquasonics, which were a great ball of energy and played some less covered tunes that I really like.
I was concerned that dragging my guitar and tank from San Diego would have been for nothing but playing Margaya on stage with my friends Jonpaul, Danny and Norman was a blast, Jeff, thanks for setting this up (Jeff did the coordination on this, we never played together before).

Besides the musical side of things, it was really nice meeting a lot of old friends which I haven't seen in a long time like Brian, Trode, DP, Jamie, and even the local LA/OC folks that I don't get to see so much anymore.

Huge thanks for everyone that provided the backline - Dario and Outer Wave - sounded great, and I really hope JR will be able to get compensated. I swear it wasn't me, I was playing on Mac's amp Smile
Reminds me that I need to check if my tank is still alive...
All that's left to do is wait for the next convention (Jeff already noted what needed to be imporved, so next time will be even better)

Hey Billy, how is your Twin doing after Patrick killed it. Maybe it was just in shock.

That's a good question! Haven't had time to check it out yet. I'm leavin' for Ireland this Wednesday for 10 days! Stoked!
I fly back on the 16th, and play at the HB museum on the 17th.
I'll kiss me a barney stone and pray that me amp works just fine for the museum my laddie.
Luck of the Irish you know. Cheers

Wow!!!!!!!!! What an event it was nice to see our big Surf Family again Eddie Bertrand was my first time seeing you you rock Dude!!!!
And again Jeff Big Tiki Dude The time and effort paid off you did an awsome job Big Surfs up for you!!!!!!!Thanks Tom and " Surf Kings " I had great time even though my Bandmaster could'nt hang LOL

Well....that was fun!

Big Thanks to Big Tiki Dude!...and all those who helped turn this event into something very special. I know he was stressing....

It looked like everyone was having a great time, whether they were inside watching the bands or outside buying, selling, trading, exchanging, getting some fresh air, etc.

For me, it's always a treat to play this music for an energetic, appreciative and understanding crowd...you guys are the best! It's such a blast to get up and play with people you've just met too! The idea of the Jam turned out to be a great one...IMHO!!!!! No major train-wrecks or clusters....

It'll be fun to see some of the video from this show!..and more pix!

Hats off to you, Jeff!

BTD - way to go! A great weekend! Saturday is still a blur - too much cool stuff.

We got there a little late because of traffic - just in time for the drum-off - too cool.

I didn't do a very good job of meeting people - I meant to meet more - it was overload -

Everyone I did meet from SG101 were super nice, and friendly -

The jams were very cool - far better than I'd imagined they'd be - the best was "Mar Gaya" with Ran, Danny, and company - Mom-surfing playing with PJ was also too cool - I was thrilled for everyone that normally doesn't play in a band who got the chance to play with some real legends of surf!

all the bands were top notch - The Eliminators, alone, and with Eddie Bertrand were great. Outerwave was awesome as well - Slacktone was great. I missed Secret Samurai, unfortunately, because of excessive sweat after our set.

Eddie Bertrand scared the crap out of me - he walked up while we were playing, got right in my face and grinned - as if to say " smile damn it!" I'll work on it Eddie.....

Well I can't top what anyone else has said. It was one hell of a blast. The event totally wore me and the Mrs. completely out by 6:30pm. Shocked
I have over 6 hrs of video to go through and make some DVD's from.

I can't say enough good things to Jeff and thoses that put this event all together.
Holy cow I'm still tired, and all I did was watch. I know one thing. There are some very awsume players on this forum.
Thanks to DGG for helping me get my guitar out of my locked case. He is such a nice person. I never used the guitar, but I kept it out so if I needed it I would have it. It was nice to meet so many people from this forum in person finially!
I got PJ 's autograph on my case. I talked personally, one on one with Eddie B. and Tim F. from the lively ones. I mean they just chatted with me as if I were someone they knew all their lives. I mean how wonderful is that? It's freaking unbelievable.
I met so many folks from this forum my head is still spinning. All GREAT folks by the way. Ed K. is a real southern boy. Ya just gotta love that accent. Mom surfing ( Carol) is a very good player. She just rocked away with PJ, AS did MR. dp himself! They were really jammin! I believe Ron Rhoades brother was also in those jam sets.

I again give a BIG THANKS to Jeff for making this all happen.

All I can say is I went away early, tired, but I was and am a very happy man for having been there. What a wonderful experience!

Thank you All!

Joel

I leave tomorrow, and I will be very sad. Here are some more random scattered thoughts. I hope to post something more coherent later.

I spent almost all day today watching Tom (tdsurf) taping The Madeira and The Surfaris for his documentary. Tom is doing an amazing job! It is a wall to wall professional deal, and he's got John Blair and HBKahuna (Tim) doing lots of hard but amazing work. I cannot wait for this to come out, it is going to be so killer! Thank you so much Tom for letting me come and hang out! And I got to hang out with Paul Johnson, Eddie Bertrand, John Blair, and The Madeira! I cannot tell you how special this weekend has been. And to think I was actually thinking about not coming briefly. I got to hear The Madeira play at least two versions of 4 or 5 more songs today. Wow, that is 4 days of the Madeira straight! HELL YES!

More random memories flashing back: meeting DP, what a great guy and great bass player! He was awesome on everything he played! Billy and Ted from the Detonators were so kind to me, such great guys. Dave Arnson from the Insect Surfers is probably in the running for the nicest human being on the planet, he talked to me like he has known me for all my life, and he does a mean Mick Jagger impersonation at the drop of a hat no matter where he is at. Ha-ha-ha. Meeting 1LoudBass (Steve) and thee Dave Wronski. Looking at Dave Wronksi's new baritone Jazzmaster in the parking lot. Norm from the Ghastly One's is also one of the nicest guys on the earth. He just exudes fun and friendliness. He just kept shoving Ghastly merch in my hands, I don't know if I can fit all this stuff in my suitcase for the trip back. Doug Snyder from Reno is a super swell guy. Baja Marty was in reverb heaven, I thought he was going to expire several times.

On Sunday there was a moment during the Madeira's set. I was sitting next to my new best friend Danny Snyder on my right, Sarah and BTD on my left, and Baja Marty in front of us. We were right in front of the stage, trying to fit into the 5 feet of shade to get out of the Huntington Beach sun. The Madeira were closing with The Intruder (and just freaking NAILING THE CRAP OUT OF IT), Marty was going nuts, everyone was smiling and bobbing along, I was on the beach with such beautiful scenery all around, it was just the coolest thing ever. I really felt something very special and moving there. Thanks to all of you. You are the best.

Brian,

Glad you got to experience the surf music scene California style.

Just got home from12.5 hours of filming Sound Of The Surf. The Madeira played with such intensity that Patrick's hands were bleeding. The Surfaris tore it up old school. Amazing. Tell all your friends to look for this project.

All in all what a great bunch of people to meet & spend the weekend with.

And BTD, excellent organizational skills. Agree

wow agreed, I had the same feeling too.
I wanted to say something then, but every time I tried to say something during the song, about what I was feeling, I got all choked up. You guys are the best. and I hope to see you all many more times in my life.

I truly feel sometimes like I am blessed to have such great friends and be surrounded by so much great music. Its what keeps me going.

I want to say more, but I'm at a loss and its hard to see the screen thru my tears of joy.

Again, thanks to all of you for coming to event, and thanks so so much for all the kind words about the sg101 convention.

btw. Thanks to Joelman and his wife for making me the big tiki dude.

It's been a couple days now. I finally have access to a computer, but still trying to get my head around what an awesome weekend it's been. Where to begin? Shocked

(Warning: This thread is crazy long, but vaguely chronological, so skim through and skip ahead to whatever interests you most. Those of you with long enough attention spans to read this whole thing have just earned my suspicion.:P )

Yes, it was great to meet so many people. It was cool to see so many of us really hitting it off and having a seriously good time just shooting the shit. A final hello and thanks to all the people I got to meet, and apologies to those with whom I missed the opportunity. I really would have liked to meet everyone there but there was so much going on it was hard to keep track.

Particular props where they are due: Thanks again to Jeff for doing a great job setting up such a successful day. You could tell the guy was stressing out at certain points during the day. Perhaps right now his shower drain is clogged from losing some of that long hippie hair of his Laughing , but he really pulled it off and showed everyone a great time. Bravo, Jeff. Cheers

I suppose I'll leave the personal experience anecdotes aside for a bit and talk about the music of the weekend. After all, thatÂ’s what it was all about:

Saturday was just a complete surf overload, but really tons of fun and consistently good stuff all day (and night). From the very get-go, Slacktone just blew the place away. Man I wish I had more opportunities to see them live because their musicianship and stage presence are almost untouchable. Dave's live tone is something to behold really. Just sounds so damn good. I think my favorite of their set was Blast Bolero. That one got me really fired up. I was ready to start a fight with someone... but in a good way. Laughing

It was really cool seeing Paul Johnson and Eddie Bertrand playing together and doing their songs the way they should be done. I enjoyed seeing the Duo Tones the weekend before, but that was just a warm up to this show which was just so cool. Man, Eddie's jag tone has serious balls. He was getting a monster sound out of it and two (!) Gomez heads.

Man, Outerwave has got the trad sound down pat. They play all the standards with just a little more guts than you would expect out of most first wave bands. Really cool sound with a great edge and feel to it.

The Eliminators played a really great set, both with and without Eddie Bertrand. Immaculate trad tone--really full sounding that just filled the whole place up with lots of presence. My exposure to their recorded output is limited, but they played a couple songs I didn't recognize that were two of my favorites for the day. Good good stuff.

The jam was a whole lot of fun. I was in and out during both of the two halves of it, but what I did hear was a real good time. The highlight was of course Stormtiger's and my epic rendition of Exotic. Laughing The two of us had developed a lead/rhythm tradeoff gameplan ahead of time, but got a little nervous when Dusty told us he had no recollection of how the song goes. He kicked ass nonetheless, of course, and we held our own against him. There ended up being a little confusion as to who was taking the lead. Doug and I both took lead duties for the first verse. I couldn't hear myself, but could hear a lead melody being played, just not how I was playing it which was really confusing. Slow on the uptake, I finally looked up at Doug to see what was going on. He was in the zone and killing on lead so I picked up rhythm duties and we ended up trading off afterwards. Our plan went entirely out the window, but we handled it like true rock stars.8) No sweat Doug, it was a total blast! Plus lots of people said they liked it afterwards, so that was a nice ego booster.

Another jam highlight was watching dp play. Besides being just way too nice a guy, Dave is really really good at the bass! I was taken aback watching the guy go wild on the thing. You could tell he was really comfortable with a bass in his hands--he was flying up and down the fretboard no problem and just doing it like a pro. Dave, you are way to good not to be in a big-name surf band. Get out there and grace some band with your skills. You'd be a valuable asset!

Perhaps the coolest jam song of the night was Margaya. It's already been mentioned a few times, and for good reason. I was outside when the guys started playing it, but it was good enough to catch my ear and draw me in. Those guys rocked the f'ing house with that one song! Mean and dark and grumbly and badass, as it should be. It was so killer. I repeat, so killer.

Unfortunately, all the later bands had to play truncated sets, but there was still lots of good surf to be had. I had never heard anything by the Boardwalkers before, but they played some pretty cool stuff. Surf with a sort of cool-cat feel to it and an interesting progressive approach with effects and slide guitar and other goodies. Their set was short, but still sweet.

The Aquasonics played a cool set of of energetic trad surf with plenty of panache. Great vibe, and some cool choices of covers. The Pier by the Astronauts was a definite pleaser. I was really digging that one in particular--another of the day's highlights.

The Surf Kings even stepped in, which I didn't know was going to happen. They've got a cool progressive sound with gutsy some gutsy guitar and double pedal work going on. There were a couple songs I didn't recognize that were really good--a nice introduction to some of their stuff that I haven't heard yet.

I think it was the Secret Samurai who closed things out, and man I was blown away by them. I had previously balked on buying their recently released album (finally got it in person!), but had heard plenty of good things about their live shows. Well it's all true. Unfortunately, they only played a few songs, but they were awesome! Ryan said that they were new ones (one for the new global-themed surf comp coming up) and they were so cool. I was really struck by Ryan's playing style, which is all his own. I guess I would describe it as very "happening"--with all sorts of stuff going on up and down the fretboard, and chord and melody progressions nowhere near what I would have predicted from the crowd--but never overbearing or overcomplex, just thoroughly cool and thoroughly impressive. I really like these guys!

... and that was only the first part of the day! Shocked

The show that night was headed off by the Detonators, who were a real blast. These guys obviously have a lot of fun up on stage. It really shows. Their songs and big cheesy grins were all really contagious. Such a good time. They played a great set--I've always been a sucker for Liquid Chaos, For a Few Waves More, and Ivan's Big Wave. Great songs. Thumbs Up
(Aside: I didn't get around to talking to any of these guys! Sad Dammit!:x Sorry, gentlemen. Some other time I guess. )

Pollo Del Mar followed with yet another awesome set. I've seen these guys a bunch, and they're always a good time. Great songs ranging from slow and spaced-out to fast and driving and everywhere in between. It sounded to me that the guys hit their stride towards the end of the set--Route 666, Anabelle Lee, Red Asphault, and Flash of Green were all definite pleasers.
Also, hats off to Danny for doing a great job sitting in with the guys. Danny's T-men endeavors sound little like Pollo, but his playing with the guys really accommodated the sound. Also, it was funny watching him play with a "for sale" tag dangling from his guitar throughout. Laughing

The Madeira followed, and excuse me while I gather my brains off the floor because I just blew my mind again just thinking about it. Laughing Can enough be said about these guys? I've already given them my share of crazed fanboy praise, but I can't help it. They've taken their place as my favorite band and champions of the genre, and everything I love about their music came through in their live performance. Playing a great mixed set of old and new material, they just friggin' rocked the place. All of us diehards crowded the stage for the entire set just to soak it up all the better, and it was completely awe-inspiring. Ivan's playing is immaculate and jaw dropping, Patrick's rhythm work is unrivaled, Dane's drumming is manic, and poor Todd has to hold all the mayhem together. They all do it like pros and just put on an amazing show. Just about every song was a highlight, but perhaps Sahar and the Saracen were my two favorites for the entire day. Intruder was over the top, Undercurrents was beautiful, Sandstorm and Wreak Havoc killed. The guys were getting that icepick tone characteristic of Sandstorm (the album) and that extra bite made it all the better live. Huge sound and huge presence--totally awe-inspiring and worth the trip in and of itself. I was juiced afterwards, and had to give everyone around me a hearty high-five in celebration. Laughing

Unfortunately, after the Madeira I had friends waiting on me and I was forced to miss the Insect Surfers' set... bastards. Evil I was hoping to be a man and stick it out for the entire day's festivities, and particularly wanted to see the Insect Surfers, but alas was cut short.
Nonetheless, it was an entirely epic day--one for the surf history books. A great time with new friends and great music. I couldn't have asked for more.

Wow, it looks like a blast... I am green with envy... Jeff, you deserve tons of credit for doing this... I came very close to attending myself, but in the end, reality reared its ugly head... PLEASE promise this will happen again next year! Congrats again to everyone who made this possible!
