tracks on there that seem to exhibit some very non-surf
influences - in particular, I'm thinking of Cherry
Cheeks and Bob Hund. The first seems to me to have
some '80s influences, maybe the Cure or something along
those alternative lines; whereas the latter track seems
to have a bit of Velvet Underground and maybe even '90s
shoegazing thing to it. Was there anything you were
going for in particular and in a conscious way on those
songs, or was it a matter of pure creativity and just
following the muse? Hope you don't mind spilling a few

BTW, I love both songs, especially Cherry Cheeks, such
a happy track!!
Whoops Ivan. Didn't see this post before now. The Bob Hund track is a cover from the fantastic Swedish band Bob Hund. We all love this band and this particular track just rocks in the original version which we have done live sometimes - played in pretty much the same way as they do it. But we're suggested by Yebo (The Tremolo Beer Gut) to Peter Gun'ify it for the record to surf up this indie-tune. A great idea!
Cherry Cheeks is probably more an indie-tune played with a surf sound. The drum beat is what started this. Do you know the German band Lali Puna? Sort of Electro-indie stuff and they create tunes with super beats. Inspired by them El Firetone made up the guitar line and back then I just got a vintage Mosrite Joe Maphis Model 1 that sounds cool played dry. In the studio we put the Mosrite through an EHX
Micro Synthesizer.

I picked up my copy last week, and am totally blown away. This CD is among the best surf/instro CD's in recent memory. Nice job!

Man, I haven't gotten anything new for a while. But I am looking forward to the next Continental Magazine & CD release, hopefully coming soon.

I've had this one in my CD changer for about a month, and it's really snuck up on me - it's a great CD! Astonishing that Gary played almost everything on this! Wow. I'm very impressed. A great variety of moods and sounds, highly creative, and excellent playing, it really sounds like a band.
I just got this next one last week, so I've only listened through it once or twice so far. But holy cow! Completely mind-bending and hypnotic and even overwhelming! I look forward to getting to know this CD better. This is true state-of-art progressive surf music.
Finally, this has been out a couple of months now, but I wanted to give it a shout-out, as it's a great EP of Shadows-like instros with a western feel plus one or two with a heavier surf influence - I'm really impressed by the songwriting, the arrangements and the playing, great stuff!

Thank God, surf music really is alive and well! The more I hear of recent releases (such as the above as well as the Bambis, El Ray, the Thunderchiefs, the Eliminators, plus some stuff on the new Continental CD like the Anacondas), plus the preview tracks of the upcoming CDs by the Secret Samurai, the TomorrowMen and (dare we hope?) the Deadbeats, the more hopeful I am about the future of surf music!

El Supernaut
I've heard about this band and this CD - it features the lead guitarist and original drummer from the Lunatics, whom I love. I just checked out the myspace site (thanks for the link!) and the tracks sound great! A bit more surfy compared to the Lunatics, but you can definitely hear the connection between two two bands . Will definitely be picking this one up! (I had been wondering whatever happened to the Lunatics - now I know!)

Oh, and I just remembered Sean's review in the new Continental that El Supernaut covers three (!!!) Blackmore songs on this CD: Rainbow's Lost In Hollywood and Catch the Rainbow (WOW!), plus Deep Purple's Soldier of Fortune! Damn! Now, there's a band after my own heart - can't wait to hear that what these sound like.
Here's the blurb from their myspace page, translated from Finnish by Google Translator:
El Supernaut saw daylight in January 2008, when the current configuration was established. Genre is a rock instrumental. Something about the similarity can be found in sponsoring the band The Lunatics. The software consists partly owned and partly stolen songs. El Supernaut has taken a software specially guitarist Richie Blackmore, without sacrificing the production of electric guitar music band The Venture mother.
Fascinating!!!

Cool, Ryan. Apparently a bunch of other covers on the CD, plus one more Rainbow track (kinda): London calling (the Clash), Das Model (Kraftwerk - not again!), Hava nagila (not again! ), Moonsafari (? - a '60 Scando instrumental), and finally Deaf man´s surf (difficult to cure) - Rainbow's version of Bethoven's Ninth! A very interesting collection of songs.
BTW, Ryan, love your avatar! Ynwgie looks like he's about 18 there. He was half the man he is today - literally (by weight)!

My guess would be Steeler. He looks really, really young there - and throwing devi's horns? Must be Steeler!

Regarding El Supernaut covering Rainbow's Lost In Hollywood - I just remembered something about that song: it opens with Cozy Powell's drum figure that's a dead ringer for the drum figure that opens the Atlantics' song "Stomping Time"! I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but I do wonder if it had something to do with the band choosing to cover it. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like....
Edit: You can hear the intros of all the songs here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/el-supernaut/id416888978
Only $10.99 on iTunes - a LOT cheaper than buying a CD from Europe, which is pretty expensive everywhere I've looked.

Nautiloids - Nautiloid Reef 7" (Norton)
Norton says:
Crude, spectacular unissued 1965 Maryland surf instrumentals! Forty-five years after it was recorded, the Nautiloids finally have their day-- on posh surf-color wax!

Combed through an old favorite record store in Chapel Hill yesterday, CD Alley, and while disappointed by the Surf/Instro selection, I did find another solid release from ACE Records; Quite A Party! 24 Great Instrumental Bands Play The Fireballs.
Great writeup from Ivan about it here.

I went nuts for Record Store Day and came out surprisingly successful!
7"s:
The Royal Fingers - Speed Crazy
Al Casey Combo - Doin' It
LPs:
The Fireballs - Torquays (amidst a ton of easy listening at a garage sale)
Freddy King - A Bonanza of Instrumentals (Sundazed)
The Catalinas - Fun Fun Fun (Sundazed)
Gary Usher - Barefoot Adventure: the 4 star sessions (Sundazed)
Guitar Mood 2 compilation
The Sunsets - Surfing (really just a jazz record)
Tony Mottola - joins the Guitar Underground (pretty bad but it was $3)
