mournbladeWell, the 1980s were pretty vapid--at least with regards to the pop
music that was being processed. But as for the "New Wave" stuff--from
DEVO to early Duran Duran (i.e., their first two albums) to Roxy
Music (Avalon_ is a real gem) to all the one-hit wonder new wavers--there
was some pretty good stuff in there--lots of experimentation (particularly
with DEVO).

Oh, and I completely forgot to add Prince to that list--I don't care what
anyone says, that guy ROCKS! He is, in my view, the ideal of how good
pop music CAN be, if only corporate lunkheads would let artists be
artists, and let poseurs be. . . well, poseurs.
Also, as much as a freak that he is, I cannot deny that Michael Jackson
is a musical genius. I always think of Dave Chappel on the witness
stand in one of his skits: When the prosecutor asks him if he thought
that Michael Jackson did the unspeakable crimes of which he was
accused, Dave said, "No, man. He did Thriller, man. Thriller."

Personally, I think the 1990s were the WORST decade for pop music (with the 1960s a close second); THIS decade isn't much better, but at least there are SOME nifty tunes being produced.
KEEP IN MIND, I am talking about so-called "pop" music.
I gather you weren't around for (_shudder_) Disco?

KEEP IN MIND, I am talking about so-called "pop" music. As we all know (preaching to the choir here), there are PLENTY of really good underground acts, particularly in surf and rockabilly.
I hear ya. It's probably no accident that 80% of my iTunes music library are tunes that I got for free. Not napstered, but full-length authorized sample mp3s from Indie bands, downloaded from the artists' own site, or from places like epitonic.com and insound.com . These sites tend towards bands and artists that are still working to make music on their own terms, not product for MTV.
If I buy a CD in a store, it's most likely a re-issue of something I already have in vinyl, or a compilation, like what Rhino Records publishes, or else some exotic import like Tuvan (Mongolian) overtone singing or Breton (French) bagpipes.
— I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.
