Here is a list of artists that have never won a grammy.
Led Zepplin
Neil Young
Jimmy Hendrix
The Beach Boys
The Who
===>That IS a travesty, I agree.
Allman Brothers Band
===>Worthless.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
===>Meh. . . "Run Through the Jungle," maybe. . . .
The Grateful Dead
===>Worthless to the point of being criminal. ****ing hippies.
Queen
===>Um. . . .
Diana Ross
===>Overrated, like pretty much anything Mowtown.
Stevie Wonder is an exception.
2Pac
===>Never heard his stuff, so I can't comment.
David Bowie
===>David Bowie IS a true musical genius, I will agree.
The Doors
===>They are a guilty pleasure of mine, I will admit, but I don't think
they're Grammy-worthy.
Bob Marley
===>Don't know enough of his stuff to judge.
50 Cents
===>Never listened to him, so I can't say.
The Byrds
===>If there is any band WORSE than the Grateful Dead and Crosby,
Stills, and Nash, its The Byrds. . . .
Also, largely ignored are Bob Dylan, James Brown, Maddona, and The Rolling Stones.
===>Aside from the Stones, who HAVE produced some genuinely good
music over the years, I'd say the rest are overrated narcissists (especially
James Brown).
Conclusion: Grammys = meaningless.
===>Well, I'd say they're meaningless, too, but for completely different
reasons--primarily because of whom they DO recognize, not because
of whom they have ignored. (There's a difference.)

Kid Rock > John Fogerty?!?!
I'm going to have to wholeheartedly disagree.
Its ok to disagree, if the world agreed with what i think on most things it would be a horrible place:)
I just hate fogerty, not as much as the eagles.. but close:) only thing fogerty ever did that makes me not completly hate him is fortunate son.. AND.. that was done better by seger, and WAY better by the circle jerks:)

...Dick Dale was nominated for a Grammy back in 1986 for that one tune he played with Stevie Ray Vaughn (Pipeline)...they didn't win though...
I still love that version of Pipeline.
===>It blows the original one out of the water, I say. In fact, I'm pretty
sure THAT was the song that brought surf music to my attention. (I mean,
I KNEW what surf music was, but I never really thought about it until
that fateful day when I saw the end of BACK TO THE BEACH when I
was working in a movie theater in high school sometime in the 1980s.)

Morris day... YEAH! i love morris.. and he rocked... i HATE when they interupt a good song to have another song in the middle of it.. wtf is that? and whats up with the umbrellas? but morris rocked:)
Morris Day & The Time--wow, I haven't heard THAT name mentioned
in AGES. Why was he on? All I can recall is that he was cooler than
hell back in the 80s. I, for one, would gladly welcome him back to
the pop mainstream.

The DD/SRV version of Pipeline is better than the original? Gonna have to start revoking memberships I'm afraid. ;)

He's within his rights too.
I used to like the DD/SRV version too, back when the first and only surf cd I owned was a best of Dick Dale comp. As soon as I heard ANY other version, I realized that I don't like that performance very much. ![Laughing Laughing](/media/smiley/images/icon_lol.gif)

I knew we could tie the Grammys to surf! It's 6 degrees of separation - surf style!
I think we all can agree - Pipeline is a great song! listen to it as much as you can - all the versions, and play it every time you pick up a guitar. (Danny Snyder, you are exempt) ![Cool Cool](/media/smiley/images/icon_cool.gif)

Just for this thread I listened and watched both the chantays version and the DD/SRV version again. just some observations
- I can understand (but not agree) how someone would prefer the DD/SRV version of the main part, for it's sheer energy and power. If Dick Dale makes it sound like "being inside a pipeline", the chantays make it sound like "being in a hot tub".
but the bridge part, man oh man, what a friggin' joke, what is that? Im a huge SRV fan but this just doesnt belong. BAD! BAD! BAD! also, the rhythms being taken form KISS' 'I was made for loving you baby', not such a good idea.
also, SRV= is tough mean macho mofo, with the hat and the boots and the powerrock.... yet, watch the video and compare his tone and playing with dick dale, he sounds like 15yr old emo girl with a cutykitty guitar or what's it called.
and one last hair observation: notice how SRV's hair is waving in the wind (of a huge fan no doubt) - yet Dick's hair is completly unaffected
back to the grammys.

In a way yes and no. I'm so out of the loop with the mainstream music industry that I really don't know how popular or important some people are. So, in my head I build up all the artists I like thinking they are the most popular out there only to get my preconceptions pissed on by the abortion that is the grammys once a year.
Sonichris
part of the problem with the Grammys is that seeing who's popular and winning grammys makes me feel like I'm not on top of it, or missing something. Like I'm not smart enough to see the pure genius of some of the bands that are winning. I just sit there and go "What the ?, isn't singing on key good anymore?"
We're turning into our parents.
Sez me, who cannot bear to listen to mainstream music radio. Gimme Nine Inch Nails, Patsy Cline, The Beatles, late 19th-century chamber music, The Who, Virginia Dare, misc. surf&instro, Ghosts and Vodka, anything but what is said to pass for "popular music".
That's why The Good Lord gave us iPods.
— I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

I think popular music has lost touch with what makes music great. That is the music. It is more of a theatre production these days.
I like mid 18th century chamber music and even more so church music.
I should also point out I think that, since the turn of the century, the state of music has been the most creative and brilliant it has ever been, although many will argue the 60s were equally creative.
In my opinion albums are better, from the top to the bottom, than they were in the 60s. The 60s albums have the great classic/epic/hit songs modern albums tend to lack on, but I think a lot of 60s albums suffer from filler or label mandated covers et cetera.
Of course each decade has brilliance, with the 70s lacking a little more brilliance than the other decades.

As someone else mentioned in an earlier post,
it's more about "image" than it is the music.......
That's where the big Record companies come in
and finish everything with high "theater production,"
and that's why most of todays pop music all has the
same irritating "corny" synth sounds. That's why we
also have "American A**hole" as a top rating TV Show. ![Suicide Suicide](/media/smiley/images/icon_suicide.gif)

Of course each decade has brilliance, with the 70s lacking a little more brilliance than the other decades.
Well, the 1980s were pretty vapid--at least with regards to the pop
music that was being processed. But as for the "New Wave" stuff--from
DEVO to early Duran Duran (i.e., their first two albums) to Roxy
Music (_Avalon_ is a real gem) to all the one-hit wonder new wavers--there
was some pretty good stuff in there--lots of experimentation (particularly
with DEVO).
Heavy Metal was also at its best in the late 70s/early 80s (thinking
Judas Priest, Dio, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, and David Lee Roth-era Van Halen).
There don't seem to be a lot of BANDS in the pop charts any more--it's
all overproduced "singers," who wouldn't know talent if it came up and
bit them on the. . . .
Personally, I think the 1990s were the WORST decade for pop music
(with the 1960s a close second); THIS decade isn't much better,
but at least there are SOME nifty tunes being produced.
KEEP IN MIND, I am talking about so-called "pop" music. As we all know
(preaching to the choir here), there are PLENTY of really good
underground acts, particularly in surf and rockabilly. Electronic
acts (such as the Orb, Banco de Gaia, FSOL, et al.) have put out some
really good stuff (if you're into that sort of thing--I am, but I would
suspect that synthesizers are viewed as suspect by many on this
forum. . . .)
Enough of my rant.
