well since I am going to Tiki Oasis anyways I'd be happy to include the sg101 seminar into my plans,
but like I said I had a hard time doing everything I wanted to last time, and meet with out of town tiki people, and get our collective drink on, and be coherent.
the seminars they had were half hour to 1 1/2 long. and some cost and some were free.
I dont think its 100% great idea, but i'm not down on it either.
the Hotel there is pricey, and food is kinda hard to get, as the staff gets overwhelmed by all the people.
Otto is cool as he had Kristena and Clint Beachwood DJ on Sat. and at the last minute he had Kristena and I dj on Sun for 3 plus hours.
and alot of the tiki people dug it.
Also I have been e-mailing him about certain surf shows, and he forwards that to his e-mail list for tiki events.
and he used to review surf cds in his tiki news mags back in the day.

I am one of the 13 who voted for So Cal. I would agree with those mentioning "The Madeira" as a starting point. Keeping it small is a good idea and would eliminate BTD's worry about "getting his collective drink on"
I would not consider the event SG101 "worthy" without at least these 3 criteria being met.
- at least one "touring" band performing (Madeira fits the bill perfectly)
- Our unofficial spokesperson "Bigtikidude" with drink(s) in his hands
- Some surf show "slackers" in attendance from out of the area
(I would include myself in the latter catagory)

I went ahead and voted for an indoor event. I'm sure I'm an extreme minority (hell, I'm the only one who's picked that option so far) but I practically burst into flames when I'm out in the sun too long, and my doctor constantly advises me to avoid excess sunlight. Also, please understand that my personal opinion doesn't really matter, as there is about a 10% chance of me actually making it out there. I was just throwing the ol' two cents in.
Additionally, it'd be cool to have it in SoCal, and have it be a smaller event. And, if I could make it out, I'd be tickled pink (what does that even mean? It sounds kind of gross...) to see The Madeira or The Nebulas (or both. That'd be the best show ever.) play.

I would be more inclined to travel for a festival versus convention. I would prefer live performances and cocktails over seminars. As for So. Cal vs. Vegas, I find myself leaning toward Vegas, but I would think location would almost come down to the person(s) who ultimately organize this baby.
It was asked along the way "Would we, could we, on a boat"? I believe Los Straitjackets did a fan cruise a while back. That may be interesting, eh?
Also, it was asked if there would be an Exotica (Chicago) this year. At present, the organizers do not plan to do one in '08 (though they suprised everyone last year and decided to do one). They said possibly again in '09.
Regarding Vegas, we did an event in the Midwest called the Atomic Frolic that my parner took to Vegas (combining it with Cherry Capri's Mondo Lounge). The event was called "Mondo Lounge-Atomic Frolic" and was held at the Aruba Hotel (smaller hotel). There were bands around the pool, vendors set up, etc. May be an interesting angle (which I know what brought up earlier as well).

I'm thinking a convention would have live performances built into them. no?

Several people mentioned the Madeira, so let me just say that if something was to happen while we were around, we'd be very happy and would love to see and meet everyone! FYI, the Madeira will be playing in SoCal the first weekend in August, including the August 3rd gig at the Huntington Beach pier as part of HBISM Surfin' Sundays show featuring five other surf bands (I hope it's OK to reveal that by now).

That's a lot of options! I think if you're going to do something this year, the plans better be set soon because summer will be here before we know it. I don't care what everyone decides, but if I can help in any way, I will.

so I guess this is dead in the water since nobody can agree on anything.
I knew it would end up like this.
I was hesitant to even post anything at all, when this started,

Although we can't agree. I think we could all agree that something would be better than nothing.

You simply cannot get consensus on something like this. Someone must emerge, gather some followers, and make it happen.

There's plenty of options listed above Jeff, put your money where your mouth is and make it happen if you care so much about it. If it's too much for you, then form a little SoCal comittee and aproach it like a professional.
Set up an event on the calendar and see how many RSVP's you get before you commit to spending any money. Even if the turnout is small, make it such a good time that everyone brags about it and inspires more turnout the next year.

Jeff IMO I think we should plan it for next year 2009 this will give those time to make arrangements and then we can all plan and not feel short on time and rush let's do it right this gives us ample of time to find a joint (Indoor -Outdoor), bands or band, Sponsors, the head leaders to organize so the event doesn't become a train wreck with unhappy folks, we need to make this event/convention flow without any flaws with direction and a game plan for a 2day/weekend of goodtimes and vibes.

I've still been stewing about this.
and I've come to the realization that it really doesn't matter.
as.
a. everybody wants it when they will be here on tour, and not pay to come on a seperate trip. ( yes I know money is a factor)
thats why Im not going to the southern surf fest, the great lakes surf battle,
or the Hukilau in Floida.
b. even if we did have it. how many sg101ers would come for it.
I think less than 20. so it wouldn't be worth the effort in the 1st place.

FWIW: I would be glad to come down to see a band that I may never get to see again - the Madeira. And meeting with 20 fellow SG101'ers sounds like a great time. What's the problem?

See everyone for Madeira in HB at Pier Plaza in August.
