don't try and start too big. Let it grow on its own. I attend a few rockabilly/hotrod events every year and they just keep getting bigger. Good luck!
I really agree with this line of thinking. I think starting out small and letting it grow each year is a good way to go about it and would be waaay more manageable. It would also give the group time to learn what works, what doesn't, etc. Planning a huge 1st convention would require quite a few people with a lot of know-how to bring it together.

There are also several other things that we might want to consider. One is somewhere in the central US. It would be a much shorter average distance for people coming from across the country, especially if they are driving and bringing their equipment.
Initially, I was thinking of this as pretty much "our" convention as opposed to say a "Surf Fest." With that in mind, our local Clarkston Ga Surf Fest grew pretty well from year one to year two, and it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Right Unsteady and Damian?
As for myself and I hope I can speak for the other guys in both The Surge! and the AcoustaSonics, we'll be there.....no matter where we have it!
Man, is this a great idea!

Super Good response yo. This is a really cool idea.
We need a room, a stage setup, space for some vendors and a good flyer.
As far as flights go, Vegas and LA can't be beat. One of the two would work. I havn't checked flights out of Atlanta to LA, but I would be willing to bet that it is resonable. LA does lack the cheap lodging available in Vegas.
Vegas offers the posilbility to host it in a small hotel/casino to provide in house lodging, alchohol, convention space and outside entertainment. A hotel like the Four Queens would have good rates for that sort of stuff being downtown and older. I wonder if I could call and get a rate. I would be about the same to rent a space to do a wedding.
Anyone been married in a small Vegas convention room?
Let me know if ya have and let me know about the process.
Don't forget that Vegas is only 4 hours (+traffic) for OCers
Somehow I think the overhead for this wouldn't be SUPER high. I think a lot of $ would go to employment. Need sucurity, staff, soundmen... That seems to be the part that would rack up $.
Keep the discourse going...
I'm really soaking this up..

The geodetic center of the U.S. is found approximately 42 miles south of Lebanon, Kansas.
Maybe Kansas City would be a good choice? Or Denver?

Old Towne Las Vegas still seems like a good choice.

Let me just add this. So Cal is ground zero for the surf movement. There are more surf bands & people involved in the surf music movement per square mile in so Cal than perhaps any place else. Many of the legends live in & around so Cal. If you want them to attend, your best bet is so cal..... Some food for thought..

Vegas is fine, but if you want some of the legends to attend, Vegas is not the spot. Just something to think about.

Another idea would be a legends workshop where you get group instruction, a lecture and jam with one or more of the legends. Admission is like $30 to $50 to compensate the legends for their time. I could also arrange one on one instruction, with a surf guitar legend, $50 to $75 hourly for those interested. Just a thought.
I can set this part up..
