check out the listing for SATURDAY's SURF-ROCK SHINDIG here:

http://blog.garagepunknyc.com/

they even dropped in a picture of me I have never seen....too cool!

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

we had quite the crowd and Polynesian surf party goin' on at my SURF-ROCK SHINDIG this past Saturday night at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD; I want to thank all the bands for putting on killer sets, the staff at OTTO's for being so cool, and of course all the fans of surf music who literally packed the place

I shot one video of each band, and you can see them all on my YouTube page, http://www.youtube.com/unsteadyfreddie

but, I also have links to each individual video:

first up, THE CLAMS, from Connecticut; the tune I recorded is called RIDE THE CLAMOVAN

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXva3pruenY&feature=channel_page

and/or

http://tinyurl.com/bc32ow

second band to perform were BONGO SURF from New Jersey; their tune I recorded was DIAMOND HEAD, a trad-surf classic made famous by THE VENTURES

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqprWbq3haQ&feature=channel_page

and/or

http://tinyurl.com/clab8m

THE SUPERTONES from NYC came on third, and I recorded them performing OUR FAVORITE MARTIAN, recorded originally by BOBBY FULLER

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2GlfIXjS1s&feature=channel_page

and/or

http://tinyurl.com/b2s2lk

and, last but certainly not least, from Connecticut, THE NORTH SHORE TROUBADOURS, and here they are in all their glory performing NO BIEN

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHWPQUidljU&feature=channel_page

and/or

http://tinyurl.com/cq3hsu

this had to be one of the most energized SURF-ROCK SHINDIGs that has ever been put on at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD!!

the next one on March 7th I anticipate being a killer nite as well -- 9th WAVE, VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB, THE OCTOMEN, MR. ACTION & THE BOSS GUITARS !!!!!

so, check out the videos, and twang on with your bad selves

Wow!!
those North Shore Troubadours dudes are intense.
thats some good stuff there.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I hope everyone gets to see THE SUPERTONES' video, especially b/c it shows bassist SIMON CHARDIET heading off the stage into the crowd while he was performing....gives you a sense of what was going on when THE SUPERTONES performed.....there was literally just a drop of floor space on which to stand; I struggled just to try and get a decent of video, as I moved back and forth across the foot of the stage

we had a full house, and quite the party going on at last Saturday night's SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's SHURNKEN HEAD!!

the mix of bands and styles within the surf genre worked well, and kept people there until the last note

it was great to see MOONDAWG there again!!

image

I know he had a great time; saw him hangin' with MIKE 'STACCATO' ROSADO of 9th WAVE; perhaps MOONDAWG would like to add some of his comments to this thread?

anyway, I recorded 6 videos - 2 from each of the first 3 bands, in order, 9th WAVE, VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB, and THE OCTOMEN; no videos were shot of MR. ACTION & THE BOSS GUITARS (at their request)

big shout-out to the staff at OTTO's (NELL, STEVE, FRANK WOOD, and the lovely bar staff); lots of musicians from non-performing bands also in the house (WITCHES IN BIKINIS, The Tarantinos/NYC, THE SEA DEVILS, THE RETROLINERS) -- appreciate the support and enthusiasm

OK, let's give ya links to the 6 videos, broken up 3 bands in order of performance:

9th WAVE:

ATLANTIC SURFER
http://tinyurl.com/dnzp8r

VICTORY AT SUNSET
http://tinyurl.com/aeos42

VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB:

MAIN THEME {cover of a tune by THE SHADOWS}
http://tinyurl.com/afv69b

PAINT IT BLACK {ROLLING STONES' classic}
http://tinyurl.com/anoalq

by the way, this marked the final live performance of VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB with their drummer, TODD MARTIN; he is moving to ST. LOUIS b/c his career (his 'real job'!!) it taking him there. He will be missed!! Todd also plays drums with THE SEA DEVILS -- so they will also need a drummer (any East Coast drummers reading this, please reach out to the bands if interested)

3rd band up, THE OCTOMEN:

NEMO'S NAUTILUS
http://tinyurl.com/aa3q9o

HAWKSNEST ROUTE 97
http://tinyurl.com/b6meja

so there you have it

hope people who have never been to one of my SURF-ROCK SHINDIGs get a chance to view these videos

filled with gratitude and surf-beat bliss,

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

http://www.facebook.com/unsteady.freddie

we have had a change in the May 2nd SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's

THE COFFIN DAGGERS will not appear

Thanks, Freddie, and thanks for the photo. It _was _a good mix of bands.

It was a special treat for me to hear 9th Wave live. I'd met Mike a couple of times at the Exotica surf-fests in Chicago, and heard some of the band's CDs. Live, they sounded strong and surprisingly surfy (less "jazz-fusion-y" on guitar than I expected based on their early CDs). I liked that they played 90% originals (with a great cover of "Hot Line" tossed in) and that they distinctively tweaked the sound by adding keyboard and occasional flute.

Venice Beach Muscle Club played 90% covers, but they made it work by choosing unusual non-surf tunes ("Cherokee," "Calcutta"), bending them imaginatively, and having a very tasteful lead guitarist. They got tighter and tighter as the set went on. (I don't care for the band's clunky name, btw. Something like The Warped Transistor Radios would better evoke what they play.)

The Octomen were an instro power trio, kind of like Davie Allen & the Arrows with less fuzz. Give them a better drummer and they could go places. (This drummer was monotonous, which is especially buzz-killing in a trio. There should be a rule against playing plain-vanilla surf beat in three consecutive songs.)

Mr. Action and the Boss Guitars were my least favorite. They're very good at what they do, and they certainly had the crowd dancing, but what they do is Happy Ventures Karaoke Wedding Reception covers of well known Top 40 sixties vocal tunes (TWO by the Monkees, for example). The lead guitarist looked bored through the entire set, and I couldn't blame him.

Keep up the great shows, Freddie. I recommend them any and all SG101ers who find themselves in NYC on the first Saturday of the month. I'm impressed that there are so many good bands active in the area.

THX for your kind words MoonDawg

I sent an mp3 of CHEROKEE by JORGEN INGMANN to V.B.M.C. b/c I thought it was a good fit with their 'style' -- and like you said, they play it well, with great imagination

the guitarist from MR ACTION, Joel, ALWAYS has that 'far-away' 'Mr. Cool' 'I don't have to look at my guitar' thang going on - he's not 'bored', it's his 'shtick', as you would say

these SHINDIGs give me so much joy, and I especially love that younger folks are coming out to make the scene, and returning for more the following month(s)....

The turn-out at OTTO'S SHRUNKEN HEAD was amazing. All 4 bands (EL MUCHACHO were on last, but there are no videos from them) put on killer sets. People up and dancing from start to finish. This was, truly, a 'party' from the first note until things ended around 1:45 am.

Thanks to all the bands and their fans for a special evening.

Freddie,
get well soon man,
I have had a very mild cold since last sat morn.
needless to say when I woke up with a soar throat and a runny nose.
I freaked out.
when I went to my Dr on mon. I asked him,
what are the symptoms of swine flu.
he said believe me, you don't have swine flu,
if you did, you wouldn't be standing up.
good to know.
Shocked

Get well Freddie,

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Just in case, I'll be wearing a gas-mask tomorrow night! Wink
