Growing up on Oahu I was WAY too nerdy to surf. That’s what the cool kids did, locals and supercool haoles only. I boogey boarded and body surfed in Kailua, but actual surfing was far beyond my means. As an adult I tried it at the easy Waikiki Beach, where tiny waves break for a long time and no reef like Pipeline has. But I sucked so hard, couldn’t manage to stand even for a second. Plus the core strength needed is pretty nuts, and just paddling out in that awkward position is a whole heap of weirdness and contortion in itself.
Fun fact: Waikiki Beach is completely fake! The sand has to get dumped in regularly since according to geography, it’s supposed to be bare rock like the rest of that coast. The time I attempted to surf I was walking out and suddenly instead of sand under my feet, there was sharp lava rock! It was one of many patches. Yow!

I dream of it for many years, but we’ve got no ocean here. Got some plans to go somewhere to Marocco to try.
But I windsurfed and water skied for many years) Does it count?)
Now I mostly scuba dive, surf the depths)

If windsurfing counts, I do, occasionally. I learned to surf in 1976 and held on to my board until 10 years ago. It was heavy and big, but Im not the kind of guy who does all the fancy tricks and jumps anyway. I later bought a lighter board but I couldn't get used to it so I sold it again. Still looking for a replacement. If there's a windsurfing spot in Livorno I might hire a set and catch a few waves. I wonder if I can get into my wetsuit...

Bodyboard.
Surfing, surf music, the lifestyle, is something of a 'mindset.'

I've been on a stand-up paddle board for about 10 years. If you can't surf you can do this. Not the same rush as surfing, but the first glide will get you close if you have never been on a wave. Good luck.

Grew up surfing the rocky coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Still have my 1974 5'10" G & S Fish and my custom '75 Clyde Beatty Rocket Fish. Finally bought a longboard about 10 years ago. These days I only get out a few times a year in the summer.

Life is pretty strange, man) some dream of surfing all their lives and some live in Hawaii and do not surf) That’s funny and sad at the same time)

Despite playing space rock instrumentals I'm no astronaut. A surfing injury left someone I know quadraplegic. My credentials are watching space travel in sci-fi movies, swimming in the ocean, and risking electrocution by playing electric guitar outdoors in the rain.

Same story in Texas. Some folks with a cowboy hat have never been on a horse.

Ah dang! Apologies. I searched but that didn’t come up. I also meant to post in The Shallow End so that’s why I reported it.
I definitely feel like I missed out, and now I live in the swamp... But I got back regularly (in two weeks actually) but I usually just jump waves or go hiking... Surfing stay hahd brah!

It's okay, the subject of the old thread was "Surf" or something ridiculous. I changed it.

Australia has 10,500 beaches, 80% of population live on the coast, pretty much everyone surfs. I left it for years, but recently started again, it only takes a couple of good rides and your hooked, just one more wave, just one more wave . . . .

I did when I lived in San Diego as a teen but don't have a board anymore. Used to freeze my ass off at Torrey Pines in the 1980s.

First time was in 2010. I felt an obligation to give a try as I was so well versed in history from surf music lore. I've since then done it 3 more times. And about a month ago I found a surfboard at local garage sale for $40 so I have a surfboard now.

That SUCKS so hard, what a tragedy. Sorry to hear that. Anything in the ocean is dangerous as hell! There was that girl in the early 90s who got her arm bit off surfing, then after it healed she started surfing again! I should add that I've been scared of the ocean since I was a teen. I don't know why or exactly when that started, but these days I'm either on a kayak or my toes can touch.

I had no idea about those numbers, crazy! Seems like it might not even be too cold? Are there beaches all around the coast or do you have to go way out to find breaks. That's so scary!
Anyone else think Open Water is one of the scariest movies ever made?

Yeah, sure there are sharks, see them out there all the time, when it happens we call it a 'nature moment' not enough to stop you surfing, surf all year round, not that cold in winter, surf breaks everywhere (maybe that's why surf music makes sense)
recent 'nature moment'
