My fear of the ocean is completely justified.

Ouch! I dived with sharks a lot but this is really different!

I sink like a stone in water. Mere swimming is difficult for me. Having lived all of my life in either Minnesota, Colorado or Arizona certainly played a role as well. I'm a Coloradan at heart, but have never skied. Played a little bit of hockey as a kid in Minnesota.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Yes, just went last Monday, but mostly Windsurf.

From surfing (even cutting highschool to get in the water), to sail boat racing. To,, to old and beat to even get in the water now. But I do occasionally get near the water.

Sail boat racing sounds cool!

Question to surfers:

Do you hear surf music in your head when you catch a wave? If so, which song? Has anyone ever gotten inspired for an original surf song while surfing?

I ask because I do a lot of biking and often times there is an internal musical accompaniment that is often surf. Some of my best originals came to me while biking...

Not sure about in your head but when on the beach looking out at all the waves/surfers/etc, imho listening to surf music just makes sense, every surf song becomes like a live music video clip

I surf sporadically and lamely, but do indeed bodyboard. I remember the revelation decades ago of discovering the concept of 'the wetsuit'("Hey, I'm not cold after 10 minutes anymore!")!

Hell, I can barely swim!

I am an avid bodysurfer but don’t own a wetsuit so I haven’t gotten wet in about 6 months.
Is it me or is this year colder than last several? Glad climate change is uneven because I can’t handle heat.

Squink Out!

That is awesome, it sounds like a scary dive!

Before smart phones I had to hum a song until I could get home to record it with a little handheld recorder. Now I pull out the phone and record a voice message. Yay technology!

Well over half my songs have been composed on bicycle. And under the influence of a wonderful plant.

As for me whisky or vodka goes perfect for songwriting)

I surf, in the UK mostly. A little less these days, but after 30 years of surfing I think I can take it a bit easier! My dad was a surfer, surfing the beaches of Cornwall in 1960/61. He still windsurfs, which is impressive.
I think I avoided surf music for years because I surfed. I'm not a fan of cliches so I never dressed 'like a surfer', talked 'like a surfer' or listened to much surf music.

I very rarely ever hear surf music when I surf. Occasionally a Beach Boys song maybe. Usually just your run of the mill ear worms.

I used to create a lot of songs when I cycled though! I think it's the rhythm of the pedals makes that happen. The moment I get off the bike, the amazing song I was carrying instantly disappears.

See now that looks like a perfect place to learn and practice, nice run! The only place I know of on Oahu that's even remotely like that is Waikiki beach but the waves don't go that long. That is some nice mellow surf.

Ah! Now those songs can be easily preserved with your phone's voice recorder! For all the other "awesome" crap that can be done on these smart phones, that function is one of my favorite things. I use a free app called Voicerecorder which is better than the iphone internal voice memo app, since it doesn't accidentally get wiped! Plus it can record in WAV and easily download to a real computer via wifi.

Now get on it Da-ron - go ride your bike and compose some songs!
