I think the ratio would go way up if less men would play surf.

Playing in a band that has always had a woman in it as a guitarist with (the exception of only two shows since 2000), I can tell you Mandy was onto something with her point about surf being especially polarizing. I know this because instead of men speculating about what women think- I believe Ivan made a funny jab about that- Jennifer and I have talked to them. I know. Brilliant, right? Quick examples of stuff guys love: The posters of B-movie women with clothes torn apart being attacked by beasts, the use of women as set decoration or dancers, the endless obsessing about gear and gadgets...all things that help push them away. It shouldn't come as a shock that Jennifer (from our band) has talked to some of the very women mentioned as examples in this post. I have as well, but not in a "what's it like for a woman" degree as they share among each other. This is one of those areas where as the saying goes, "be careful what you wish for" if you are asking on a surf site what it is that repels them because many here will not like the answers they give and some will get hurt feelings. If a woman posted on a car site, "Okay, you asked- here's what is stupid about you guys with your cars..." well, she wouldn't because why invite that kind of ire: one vs. all the die-hard fans on their home turf? It would certainly explain the lack of woman answering this thread. Ask women guitarists directly or write them. This is no great mystery that cannot be known. They certainly know WHY they like things and not others. — |

Might it have anything to do with the fact that (And this nothing more than an anecdotal observation, nothing scientific ) most women I know, don't care for instrumental music. Even just to listen to, let alone play. I've been to A LOT of instrumental shows in my life, and with few exceptions, they are usually the proverbial 'sausage fests'. (Can I say that here?) I've seen the Dixie Dregs/Dregs/Steve Morse several times: probably 80% dudes. Last time I saw The Dregs, I went with a couple of women whose older sisters were into Prog Rock, so I don't think it was too much of a stretch for them; they said they enjoyed it. Joe Satriani: mostly dudes. Eric Johnson: mostly dudes, maybe 60-70%, but then again, half half his songs have vocals. Jeff Beck: mostly dudes, but like EJ, a slightly higher percentage of women. Los Straitjackets: mostly dudes. Return To Forever: I'm guessing 60% male. Dick Dale: I'm guessing about 50/50 men and women, but then again, he's DICK DALE. (The first time I saw DD, he hung out at the front of the stage after the show, to sign autographs. A really pretty young woman, young enough to be his Grand Daughter, gave him him a peck on the cheek. She then mouthed the words, to her friend, "I just kissed Dick Dale!") Does anyone here have any similar observations? —-Cheers, Clark- -Less Paul, more Reverb- |

You are on to something, my wife feels the same way, she loves when I play songs with vocals but "Instrumentals", no way, she doesn't like Link Wray, Duane Eddy, Dick Dale tunes. And get this she L-O-V-E-S, LOVES Robert Johnson, I turned her on to his stuff in the mid-1990's on a road trip back and forth to Florida from the Northeast. |

The assertion that women don't like instrumental music is absurd. That blanket statement "women don't like instrumental music", should read "my wife isn't interested in my instrumental music". A simple brainstorming might just show why. Are classic car involved? Is a sport involved? Do a bunch of men dress up as what they think is cool in clothes from a bygone era? B-movie samples? Mexican wrestling masks? Jetpack, a few posts up, is dead on. |

I wanna quote this again because I still think about it when I post things for my radio show. I wouldn't say he nailed it because I'm not a girl and I don't know, but this music simply doesn't need to use scantily clad women as a trope. It can't be sending the right message. —Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio Last edited: May 13, 2017 23:13:06 |

I've heard many guys say that. The assertion that men like instrumental music and that women don't, is ludicrous. My husband doesn't like to cook. All men don't like to cook. I've seen a woman cook before, women love to cook. That is this argument. Clearly, women don't like instrumental surf music and some of the closely related genres as much as men do. There is a reason for this, it has been outlined above a couple times. Women do like instrumental music. There is classical instrumental music, Herb Albert, first wave surf music. Those dances weren't sausage fests. Last edited: May 14, 2017 23:38:10 |

I see a counterpoint to the maleness of electric guitar music in the femaleness of fine arts painting, which my wife is heavily involved in. To support and encourage her I go to many fine arts related events. About 80% of the artists are female. The band environment differs markedly from the fine arts environment. We band folks seem commonly exhibitionistic and outgoing. The artists very widely from outgoing to socially phobic, from exhibitionistic to introverted. Band involvement seems to require more physical stamina and strength than painting. (The artists involved with welding and statues are usually male). IMO music performance is more right-brained and fine art painting is more integrated right & left brain. This corresponds to the more lateralized brain structure of males, and the greater integration of spatial and transcriptional functions in females. The male fascination with tools is right-brained. The structure of the guitar fretboard is also right-brained. Lyrics are more left-brained. —Insanitizers! http://www.insanitizers.com Last edited: May 15, 2017 16:22:48 |

It's the absence of "lyrics", broads need songs to "be about something" or "say something to them", instrumentals by nature don't send a message (at least one their brains recognize), remember THEY ie. women are ALL about "communication". There IS an exception to this rule eg. "Club Music", that bass, the "driving beat", for some of them it's about getting that "itch" scratched, in most cases it's something that could be remedied with a week or two of strong antibiotics.
