LOL, I remember those kind of things from when I was a little kid and the whole thing came apart & the projector half clamped to the speaker half. (was tall so I got snagged to go get the darn thing all the time so it wouldn't get banged on the ground) That's a great idea.

Makers (some real famous ones too) are still marketing little lo-watt rigs at high-buck tariff, with the amp badge & furniture garnering some of the draw. Imo, that's one of the things that makes this Quilter so interesting if someone can get past the fact that it doesn't have tubes (which I understand completely). But for someone who hits a variety of venues, or even just wants to leave a dedicated practice rig up in a practice or recording facility and not haul their big-iron around all the time, this seems to be really viable. Speakers are all over.

I've not tried the direct out as I don't have much use for it however I wouldn't think it would sound steller for guitar since it won't have any cabinet simulation built in like a dedicated, modern line out.
Keep in mind it's actually just the effects send so the signal will probably be a little bland.
You could run that signal through a cab simulator device or pedal...
I could be wrong though and like any audio - it's all what you do with it.
Some can make magic from nothing.

Is it my local indy music store or Quilter? I go in to my local Hubbard Music in Hubbard Ohio and ask about getting a Q101. After some small conversation on the topic of " never heard of them before " I say they are part of QSC. Well they are QSC dealers so I figgure what the hell order me one up. I get a call back later and they tell me the 10K minimum order size is a bit steep at this time, so no they will not order one in. WTF people any ideas besides ordering on the interweb?

Here's a couple of reviews / impressions I posted on the Quilter User Page recently regarding the Quilter 101 and Weber 15" Cali speaker.

Quilter 101 Mini Head; first impressions.

Set-up = Q101 Head / Weber 2x10" speakers / Gretsch Electromatic 5420T / Zoom MS-70CDR

So I received the Q101 and hooked it up to the speakers in my Fender VVRI, which are aftermarket Webers. I played it straight with no effects for quite a while and was overall very impressed. The head seems to really bring out the natural tone of the guitar. Even with various settings it didn't seem to color the tone as much as some tube amps (Fender).
While I am still finding my way around the EQ dials and settings, I really liked the Surf setting the best and the Tweed the least. I could see where the "scooped" setting would be great for something like a Strat, but I was running it closer to center with the Gretsch.

I never got past 10 watts on the master with the gain on about 3. Some stage time with a full band will ultimately tell the tale, but it seems to have plenty of power for my needs.

It sounded really good with certain reverbs via the Zoom MS-70CDR as well as some delays. Didn't try any other pedals.

I have a custom 1X15" closed back cabinet on order and will be pairing it with a good clean speaker; going for a traditional Surf sound. Hopefully it will sound as good or better than the 2x10s, though the 2x10" speakers sounded really good with the Q101.

• High-Cut dial: I'm just not sure about this yet? My first impression was that this EQ could use some improvement and I can understand why some folks are having trouble with higher gain pick-ups / guitars. When trying to tweek the High-Cut combined with the Tweed setting, it really became problematic and difficult to find a good overall tone (for me anyway).

** Thus far about my only suggestion for this unit would be a BASS & TREBLE dial instead of the High-Cut.

Speaker review - Q101 & Weber California 15"

So in my quest to assemble a "mini" Fender Showman rig I ordered an Avatar 1x15" closed-back cab and installed a Weber California 15". Weber advertises this speaker as a replacement for the JBL D130 15"

After installation I demoed the rig using a Gretsch 5420T Electromatic and a Zoom MS-70CDR for various reverbs / delays.

• Nice big clean sound! This speaker can really handle a lot of power without distorting. I turned the MASTER full on with the GAIN on 6 and it still wouldn't break up.

• I opted for a paper dome (you have 3 options). They describe the PAPER dome as; "High end is tonally between the other dome types, more piercing only under heavy pick attack. Good for brighter cleans and slight overdrive."

• In hindsight I probably should have went with an ALUMINUM dome considering the Q101s inherient bassyness; the aluminum dome is described as; "Very bright, almost piercing highs akin to vintage JBLs. Good for crystal cleans, but avoid for even slight distortion".

• Awesome rhythm sound but a bit lacking for lead work. When I say "lead work" I mean traditional Surf lead ala Dick Dale and the like. I understand that most any 15" will lack some treble compared to other speakers and the Gretsch also likely contributed to this. I suspect with other amps with normal tone knobs I would probably be able to tweak this overall tone for a more desired sound. I'll try my DiPinto Galaxie IV & Strat (single coils) with this rig and update soon.

This is very informative, thank you. Am really thinking hard about getting one of these. I really love the sound (clarity from low to high, with some "punch") of the 2x10's in my Vibrolux Reverb but...

May have to get one and (shazam!) it's small enough I can just haul it around back & forth to try various speakers. I love 2x10's but at times especially for trad surf, would like to have a somewhat more in your face D120 or D130 type thing going. Portability isn't a big consideration on the cab, but probably a single 12 or 15.
Appreciate any updates you continue to provide & thanks again.

One other question (and lots of leeway given since it's really subjective); can you comment on how you perceived inherent bassiness? Do you think it was the amp, or perhaps in your initial tests with that guitar (vs a Strat or something)?

Using Quilters Surf setting there is definitely an inherent bassyness to that particular voice. Of course that's not a bad thing by any means if you're going for a Fender Showman type tone or even a Twin Reverb. I could see how that might bother some who are seeking other though.

With the Q101s EQ controls there's just no way to dial it back really. One thing I did discover though was that by turning down the volume on your guitar a bit it would decrease the bass response some.

When I initially received the Q101 I hooked it up to the speakers in my Fender VVRI (Weber 2x10s) and it had the same inherent bassyness. With the the closed-back 1x15 cab it was even more pronounced. It definitely thumps like a Showman cab at stage volume.

With some of the other Q101 voices not so much.

Overall though the Surf voice imho is the best.

Totally agree about the pronounced Bass described above in the Surf setting.
Different speakers can help if it's a problem.
This plus a few other conveniences are pushing me towards a Micro Pro head.
I do still very much like my 101 though.
