Okay, order canceled. Thanks guys! Who's willing to put a nice germanium fuzz together for me or point me in the direction of a useful kit?! I am totally after that Fuzzrite sound, but the Ashbass pedals are simply (almost) unavailable in the EU....

Damn it Catalinbread, i bought a Merkin, on the assumption that that was your version of the Fuzzrite. So what's the difference?

I haven't finished mine (lazy deciding on case paint) but this gentleman here has the schematic & layout/parts list available for download (free), as well as simply the etched/marked PCB ($14) if you want to source the rest of the stuff yourself. Also, the full kit with everything here for $45.

If you like that kind of thing you might want to drop him a line & see about mailing to Deutschland.

In my back & forth with him he did mention what ludobag said, a Fuzzrite is pretty much one sound, the Fuzzrite. In fact the "Fuzz" control isn't really for how much fuzz, but rather like a depth knob with a mid-hump in the middle of its travel. No question Catalinbread puts out good stuff, but if you don't mind building stuff this is a pretty easy-breezy pedal to put together.

Now back to prepping the case for some primer so I can actually compare it to the Catalinbread when it comes out...

+1 on that pedal being wayyy over priced. Fuzzrite has one of the simplist circuits you're likely to find in a pedal, I've built them myself as well... piece of cake.

The Del-Vipers

O.K. here are a few resources I collected regarding the Fuzzrite, for those who want to DIY this stuff. I'm all in now too, thanks to Catalinbread SanchoPansen's poor GAS impulse control Wink Big Grin

A good read:, for starters

My apologies!

And thanks for the links!

The Hicadoolas

Super +1 on the DIY stompboxes. I've made a handful of fuzzboxes; I just finished one based on the Fuzzrite. If anyone is interested in starting, I highly recommend Joe Gore's tutorials over on tonefiend.

The Reverbivores - we're local favorites!

it is the one i have made

if you look closely you can make it point to point also ,no pcb needed in fact

I tried the number 3 and it sounds good. Here you have the same schemtic using veroboard:
here

After some months I mod it adding a JFET based pregain and a tone pot wich made it more versatile and still can get that fuzzrite farty sound:

Tried several silicon transistors, and the 2N2926 sounded the best to my ears. You can find them on ebay. Very easy build!

Got mine yesterday. I don't have a lot of fuzz pedal experience other than Boss, but I think it sounds good. Used my Jazzmaster, Supro and one of those Lester Polfus guitars. Sounds best with the Supro with the guitars volume dimed.

I agree that based on components prices, most fuzzes are expensive. And sure, building a fuzz is ridiculously easy, but making a good sounding unit can be tricky to say the least.

Those guys should be down for making a Ge Fuzzrite:

I had to Google that. Confused

I've been keen to get a spaghetti western-type fuzz and my Fulltone SoulBender is just a bit too refined for that.

With exchange and shipping, that Catalinbread Fuzzrite would be $200 Cdn. It does sound good, though. Just too rich for my blood considering how much use it would actually get.

I have built a BYOC effect before but I have so many other fun projects on the go that it would take me a year before I could get down to building the darn thing.

For the time being, I am happy with the EHX Satisfaction fuzz that I just picked up. Pick hard near the bridge, use some reverb, adjust pickup selector and volume/tone knobs accordingly and there are more similarities than differences between the Fuzzrite and the Satisfaction.

The EHX Satisfaction is based on the Jordan Bosstone.

Thanks, didn't know that. Smile I'll keep that in mind when I play it against my (nearly finished) Fuzzrite clone. The Satisfaction will probably go back to the store for a bunch of strings or a cheap mic or something; kinda thin to my ear. Probably part my ears & part apples/oranges.
