+1 Yes, we lose one thing it's often important to fill the void that's left. Unintentionally, I started getting weaned (mostly) off smokes due to just a general cultural change over the years. While being against govt attempts at legislating human behavior (which usually turn out badly) this was a good thing. When I was working I couldn't smoke in the facility I worked at, didn't smoke in the car, never smoked in the house... Over time it's just once in awhile, in the same way someone might occasionally enjoy a cigar or something (if I can find one 'cause now I don't buy them very often or carry them).
And, oh my, the discretionary money available is HUGE, which is just one benefit, not just gear. Ticket & travel over to the other side of the state to see The Madeira with The Revomatics? Pffft. Less than a carton of smokes, don't even give it a thought.

Never ever compensate smoking with GAS (pun intended). I quit smoking more than 10 years ago and rewarded my self with 1 new CD for each week I didn't smoke. With increasing tobacco prices 1 CD became 2, etc. etc. I now have an still expanding CD-collection, which completely ruins my living room. CD's everywhere! I just invested, a small heritage, in a handmade CD-closet for my collection. This set me back more than 2000 euro's.
Now I'm looking for another piece of furniture, just for my FX-pedals... Ikea?
I feel dirty and ashamed.

It is an old trick that psychotherapists pull, when helping people to get over an (lethal) addicition. Back in the 80s in Germany you were put in a special 'hospital' when you were addicted to drugs. No addicting substances were allowed there and even coffee was banned. But they let the 'patients' smuggle in coffee, so the hardcore heroin addicts all of a sudden started to concentrate on getting their coffee kick. I don't know if that's a good therapy, but this trick helped me to quit smoking and gather gear. No harm done.
So Wes, will we meet you at the Surfer Joe then? Not exactly the other side of the state, but hey...and it would be a honor to have a beer or two with you.

That would be sweet & the invite is most kind; alas, no. I'm partially in the job of a caregiver right now & don't travel much anymore, certainly not by commercial air. But I will be there in spirit and we'll have lots of good reports from folks.

Since I quit smoking I can never smoke anything again (cigarette, cigar, shisha, joint, whatever...) I will be back smoking, even worse than before. Cry Sometimes I miss it...then I buy gear to compensate.
so, I think I mentioned something and by accident found out one personal (maybe there are moe?) cause / reason of your gear-addiction ?
So the thread gets back to Ivan's original intention.
Well, I smoked 2 1/2 packs a day. So I've spent ~3000.00$ just for smoking a year. Gone. Ended up in the air and trash. And just think how much gear you get for 3000.00$.
I'm looking on craigslist again, entering the usual search terms...someone please stop me!
/Edit: In the last 2 hours or so I've entered the following search terms into the german craigslist:
Echolette
Mosrite
Fender Showman
Fender Bassman
Fender Bandmaster
Fender Reverb
Fender Jaguar
Fender Jazzmaster
Yamaha G100
I feel bad now and I need a shower...
I know that - oh yes and all these words are very familiar to me (I would just add 2 or 3 maybe ;)...
So - since I never even started smokin', my personal cause / reason is another. Well - I guess - one important source might be: I don't have a wife/girlfriend, who could stop me - (and also the compensation aspect).

Like all addictions, it's a constant struggle. But as addictions go, this is a much better one that most! It's 'mostly harmless.' I fully expect to succumb to temptation again in the future - it's really not a question of 'if', but rather of 'when'. So, all I'm trying to do is push off 'when' as far into the future as possible! But it's so ridiculous, since all I really want are Strats - and how many Strats does one person really need??? The answer, of course, is always: one more.

It could be worse! You could have a wife that supports you and plays in the same band! Ahhhhh...

If this applies to Teiscos and vintage Japanese guitars I'll be fine.

I am
Why are you looking at me like that..............?

I thought ukuleles would be like methadone for GAS. All it did was open a whole other form of addiction for me. And there is no price break when you start looking at the really nice ones. The only plus is they take up less space.

I was lucky to get a really nice uke before the uke boom happened, 15ish years ago. It is amazing...
But... then adorkable white girls ruined the uke... And the virtuoso boom of the ukulele who started off making really great music then became monsters...

Whooohoooo!! I have sold my blue tolexed VOX AC30! Good and cool amp, but I don`t needed it…
…I have bought a guitar… an electric guitar!
A Mosrite Combo from 1968. Extremely good condition. In red with matching head. Moseley trem on it. Greeeeeat sound, neck and feeling! I could not resist… BUT why not? I sold a few amps and guitars last months.
Are you with me my damned gearoholics?

There is no cure; only periods of remission.
And, as they say, PICS or it didn't happen!

Yeah!!! Thanks Jeff! : )
I guess those old Combos are a bit better in sound than the regular Mosrites?
A bit thicker, more transparent, stronger.
Good guitar! I do not regret my backslide!
here is a link. There you can see some pics I shot 10 minutes ago:
http://www.guitarworld.de/gwpages/gear,a,show,g,3017-mosrite-combo.html
…now I am going to sell one or two other guitars the next weeks… Yes.
A Danelectro DC59 in complete copper. Also good guitar, I even played it live two or three times! But I miss a trem arm…
And maybe I am selling a Jagstang. Maybe the fiesta red or the sonic blue one. …or the Cyclone II…? Hmmmm….

Well, a black Strat or even a sunburst Jazzmaster would have been harder...
I'm curious how well the Mosrite will hold up when you start throwing it around on stage.

No backslide imo; you have culled unnecessary things (for you) & replaced with something of substance. Well done.
Question is not how it does tossing around onstage; but will it tenderize schnitzel?
