Oh great leader of the VI cult, I think you've had one too many Kool-aids...you posted this already. Wink

What? Where? It must have been on page one or something. Are you sure it wasn't a different thread or different board?

Jake, you made me really LOL. Yes

Yes!

Hahaha... Jake's just excited. Can't wait to see the modded VI! It might even prompt me to do more on mine, maybe even try to do a refin. I still like the white on white, but I wish the oly on this was aged a little more.

White on white is rad! Have you thought of doing a matching headstock? White and Sunburst are the only two colors I deem appropriate to be blocked and bound and not have a matching headstock, but it will still look sharp! It would require minimal paint and white would look easy to match.

I don't think you'd want to strip a poly finish, just seems like a terrible time. Poly can age though, and likely will. I've got a poly Jazz bass in oly white that has really yellowed.

Sun(UV) and heat likes to yellow poly finish from what I understand.

Well, I guess I can exercise a little patience too. I have a 90's MIM P-bass in oly white that is a perfect naturally-aged cream color that I really want on the VI. I would almost definitely match the headstock if I end up pulling it apart and going through all that trouble of removing the poly-coat. I've never done any of this though- is it a bad idea to just use a rotary sander with a finer grain on the flat parts, and just do the rest by hand?

You will hate yourself if you sand it off. Using a heat gun can get rid of the finish and there is a chemical method as well. Heat seems to be the easiest and safest.

I really want to refinish the back of my neck... That is the only place I noticeably prefer nitro. Oh well...

Thanks for the link! It's another good excuse to get a heat gun too; I've been using my wife's hairdryer for heatshrink, and it takes too damned long.

Mike

You can use a soldering iron for heatshrink as well, if you are heatshrinking tubing.

Take care with poly and heat guns chaps. When you're heating look for a slight change or movement to the paint and remove the heat away immediately. Too hot and it will start popping and spitting hot molten plastic in your direction, it's bearably painful on the hands but not good idea to get it in the eyes. Also if the paint becomes molten on the underside then it will absorb into the wood. Sorry to be the voice of wisdom and all that, just trying to pass on my experience.

On another note, we had a rehearsal for the first time with our VI and I must say it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to play out with this fabulous instrument!

Yes it was AWESOME!! I can see the VI becoming a regular in the band. Just as long as your fingers don't give out from those heavy strings! Big Grin
